I am so glad I came across your channel, I am your average restoring the car in the home garage guy, and I just completed stripping my 66 Chevelle body to metal, and like you mentioned I to do not have accesses to any big expensive stripping machines or acid dipping, so it's been all by hand like yourself in your video, and I too used the Aircraft stripper to battle through all the layers of Factory and what ever was applied to the car for the past 50 years, all methods where used as well, but it's done now to the under carriage like you just completed , hence I am glad I watched your video, I will be buying the Needle gun at HF, so that will help I already finished the wheel wells and also found that the heat gun was the best choice I will be putting the car on a rotisserie to now get to the rest of the bottom, your video is inspiring so I am ready to go, I'm glad I'm not the only one out here putting in the old elbow grease to get it done, I am hoping that a lot of comes off in small sheets, from what I have seen on some of the floor pan I have replaced that some of it came off pretty easy, and to my surprise I noticed factory paint on the bottom of the floor, have you ever come across this?

I have to remove underseal every day at work - we repair rust. I give all the "clever" stuff a miss - I grab the Map gas torch & burn it off like you did here ^^- you don't need to go crazy, just waft the torch about - the underseal goes brittle & you can easily scrape it off down to the clean bare metal, I use an old wood chisel for that. It's a fast way to get it done & there's no complexity. We have a big blaster set-up btw, but I would never reach for it to remove underseal - a torch works best,

Yep! Exactly why I made this video. All the other options cost multiples of money when compared to the torch and scrapper. Although I do prefer the stripping discs myself.

As an old car buff I understand the desire to restore the them to pristine condition. However, as a retired chemist I must point out the dangers involved in some approaches shown in this video. The use of dry ice-solvent mixtures represents a very high risk of explosion and fire. While the liquid portion of these mixtures may be below their flash point, their vapors are not. I know because I witnessed such a fire in which 2 coworkers were horribly burned. Additionally, dispersion of particulates in the air, in combination with various solvents, represents a hazard your lungs. Particulates and most solvents are not effectively removed by filters one can buy over the counter. My recommendation is to take your classic to a professional.

This is just one of those grueling pain on the ass jobs. Im doing a honda right now with a double coating. Factory rubber coating and an aftermarket tar based coating. The tar based coating comes off well with the heat and goo gone method. Has to be hot for the goo gone to work. Thats the easy coating. The factory rubber coating.. holy moly thats tough. Its the same as you described (spray on seam sealer) Using oscillating tool then heat and wire brush for what's left. Ill be about 80 hrs in of pure head and back aches. But its these things that set a build apart from the others. Keep at it guys. Its tough work.

I just finished this dirty, crappy, brutal task of striping the undercoating on my 1978 280Z. The Eastwood Pre-paint prep solvent takes the residue of the remaining undercoating right off. As a side note I used their down to metal stripper to actually remove the undercoating - worked well, but what a mess.
@hcr-motorworks

Thanks for watching! If it was an asphalt based undercoating I have no doubt that any solvent based pre-prep would have wiped it off without issue. However the gray stuff was something else. We tried literally everything liquid and it wouldn't touch it. All wax and grease remover (pre-prep/prepsol) is pretty much the same ingredients and SPI's wax and grease remover didn't do a thing. We ended up doing the same thing as you in one area with the aircraft stripper, but I hate that stuff with a passion!

MEK? I was afraid the last liquid remedy was going to be MEK, which may have worked, but in my opinion thats stuff is worse than the Aircraft Stripper. I have a 240Z on the rotisserie right now and I'm just about to do this process, thanks for posting. I saw the other video whe n you got everything clean and epoxy primed, how long was that process, and were you concerned for flash rusting? I'm in the South and I dont think I could leave bare metal even for a night without having rust. What was your secret, or did you actually do all the work within a few days?
@hcr-motorworks
@hcr-motorworks 4 жыл бұрын
Haha yea i strayed away from MEK only because i wanted to keep it more or less diy user friendly, and MEK is most definitely not user friendly and id hate for someone to go buy some and think its as safe as using acetone or the typical diluted stuff most normal people have access to. MEK is some seriously narly stuff and i just couldn't feel ok about me endorsing its use for the average joe. Timeline wise it was in bare metal for a few weeks to a month, i don't think you'll have major issues with flash rusting honestly. Im in the south too and have left things in bare metal for months without issue, as long as its not getting rained on or something.

Take two pieces of steel clean and prep one as you normally would with sand paper then sand blast the other and prime both. Let them cure 24 hours and take your finger nail to both the sanded only prepped surface can easily be scraped off the sand blasted surface is like a chemical bond. Not all prep is the same that is fact and while it might cost you a bit to get something blasted you cannot compare to the prep it does. I have used a simple pressure tank 100 dollar harbor freight blaster with fine coal slag abrasive from tractor supply cost 10 bucks for 50 lb bags. Then you get large tarps or 5 mil plastic aheeting cover your work area even up about 3 to 4 up the walls then you can capture, screen and reuse the media a number of times. It is slow in contrast to paying a pro but its cheap. Wouldn’t use it for removing undercoating just paint, primer and rust. Oh and for F*** sakes wear a quality respirator based dust mask and ventilate the work area or do it outside under covered area.
@hcr-motorworks
@hcr-motorworks 3 жыл бұрын
I've blasted many other vehicles prior to this one, it was time to showcase something a bit different. Proper prep is key for sure! Silicosis is a real thing and proper respirators are a must if blasting with dry media!

As far as prep for bed liner as rust free and clean as that car is you would have been far far far better off getting to original paint and scuffed it or my obvious fav do light sand blasting from a further distance and a sweeping motion to just roughen the original paint then touch up and bare spots with a good epoxy primer then lay down your bed liner within the correct time frame for the epoxy primer to top coat per specs.if you dont top coat epoxy primer within a short window any top coat will not stick and it will sheet off of it like paper unless you sand it. I agree with using seam sealer but i dont think it can be applied and the bed liner applied over the top within the. Epoxy primer top coat window without sanding.
@hcr-motorworks

The epoxy I use (SPI) has a 7 day recoat window without scuffing, but yes your correct outside of that window and you MUST scuff it if you want it to stick.

@@hcr-motorworks 20 years as an Aviation Structural Mechanic in the Navy as well as hobby auto repair and restoration. With that said, we always tape off both sides of a seam before sealing then use light pressure with a spreader then peel the tape and follow up imediately with soapy water and our hand to smooth over the edges of the sealant and leave it looking really nice. Of course if your going to paint over it the soapy water would have to be rinsed off after the sealant gets firm. We do it on aircraft obviously so it doesn’t cause friction or peel off when the aircraft is flying between 300-500 mph kind of critical but it also looks professional and it forces the sealant down into the joint.

The problem with the flap discs are they remove TOO MUCH too fast, you run a really high risk of warping or actually grinding the metal once you get to it. I recommend using the norton strip it discs for the simple reason that once you get to metal, your not removing metal. With the flap discs you most definitely are grinding the metal even thinner.

Honestly with the price of steel and usability/safety of the homebuilt version i would HIGHLY recommend buying this one instead amzn.to/3KdJLdN Its not often I recommend buying over building anything but in this case it doesnt make sense to build it when you get so much more for buying one that can be used for way longer and can take the weight when you start adding doors, glass, etc. The engine stand version always felt sketch and could barely handle an empty shell.
