Undercover HGV for policing roads ‘a political stunt’ - Healy Rae

lans for Gardaí to use ‘undercover’ HGV cabs to monitor road safety is a mere “political stunt” according to Michael Healy-Rae TD.
Following the example of the British, Gardaí will spend part of their shift in an unmarked ‘supercab’ to monitor potentially dangerous driving.
The hope is that from a higher vantage point, Road Policing Units will more easily spot dangerous drivers and prevent accidents.
Deputy Healy-Rae, however, said the real aim of the new safety initiative is to “play politics to the gallery”.
“Road safety is of paramount importance,” he told The Pat Kenny Show. “But I want to highlight [what] the RSA and the Garda Commission are getting wrong.
“In Kerry, we have €700,000 to spend on dangerous junctions - the RSA spent €800,000 on an ad, a single ad, for TV.
“Where are the priorities there?
“In Kerry, I know so many dangerous roads and locations and the €700,000 we got won't even barely do a dangerous junction in each of our municipal areas.
“The Government isn’t really tackling the other causes of road deaths.”
The independent TD said the HGVs could prevent dangerous driving, but they can’t prevent dangerous road conditions.
“There are accidents happening not because of drivers’ behaviour but because of dangerous junctions,” he said.
“I personally know places where we have had awful accidents, repeated accidents.
“We have so many bad spots where repeated accidents are happening, and our local authorities are powerless.”

The deaths on our roads for a long time were falling, so what has changed, The foreign population is a big factor to deaths on Irish roads now.

You're probably correct but we've no way of proving it. Many of them are also uninsured, I suspect. However, increased traffic, combined with bad road design is also a part of it.

It's mostly Irish people Dying on the roads and their is no guards on the roads and that is the problem. They are all been sent to follow and keep.drug dealers under surveillance.....

Excellent exposure of the problems with our roads. Badly maintained, overgrown hedgerows, lack of road markings and lighting, dangerous bends and junctions. Less blaming of drivers and bring roads up to par.

A lot of the taxes gathered by Kerry Coco are paid back to Healy Rae himself. He is a contractor to the council. Wouldn’t be allowed in a lot of countries but this is Ireland.

We have so many bad drivers on our roads, im a driving instructor and spend 6 days a week 6/8 hours a day on the road and if I were a Guard I would fill my book in an hour, but the problem is there's not a guard to be seen any where.

Excellent interview. Common sense spoken by the much-maligned Healy-Rae. Full marks to Pat Kenny for a well-conducted interview with no sign of the pi$$-taking, sneering, patronising approach of many of our 'celebrity' presenters towards our indigenous 'minorities'! This is the second year now ive had to wait 6 months for an nct booking,that system is broken,mostly i see people doing motorway speeds on secondary roads have N plates in the window,overtaking on solid white lines is a huge problem

All commercial vehicles should have hands free, overgrown hedges are a big problem, road tax and house tax is not used to to maintain hedges

The hedges can be maintain easily. You dont have to go all way in . Ive farm land and try to trim hedge regularly with a simple battery hedge trimmers from lidl . But my farm ayment could be reduced if im caught cutting during closed period

Almost ALL cars have bluetooth now and/or Android Auto/Apple Car Play so no excuses for phones up to your ear or in your hand while driving. Too much 'East Coast Politics' here in this country where if it suits Dublin then everyone else has to follow suit.

Good man Healy Rae keep those motors moving as fast as you can. Maybe Swedish road design plans should be put in place. Research demonstrate that best practice road design in the most effective manner to make roads safer. This guys a hypocrite who IS pandering to the voters. I’m a contractor give me the 700k and you’ll see real value for a community’s money. Like any small to medium firm CAN achieve this. It should be local Firms that do the work. Cyclists and Motorcyclists have to take risibility too. All of the latest deaths on our roads recently involving cyclists and motorcyclists not one car or lorry driver has been prosecuted which would suggest Cyclist or Motorcyclist error. My deepest sympathies to anyone who has lost a loved one on the road but let us by accurate as to what is happening on the roads.

nobody ever mentions slow drivers holding everybody up won't pull over or let people by also tractors on the roads ( all year ) long not just in summer time .slow drivers are the real danger a law for going too slow needs to be brought in

Tractors on the road? Slow drivers are a danger? I would disagree. Unless it's on a motorway slow drivers are not the issue. The issue is the impatient driver behind the slow driver who won't wait until it's safe to pass. Remember speed limits are not targets you are to drive to the road conditions, traffic conditions, weather conditions and according to your own ability.

@davidconnolly6721 why shouldn't they be on the road? They have as much right to be on the road as you do. They travel at speed they are comfortable with. We live in a shared society. That means we share the roads as well with cyclists, pedestrians, people who may drive slower than others. Deal with it.
