Undercurrent is a 1946 American film noir drama directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Katharine Hepburn, Robert Taylor, and Robert Mitchum.
Lux Radio Theatre, sometimes spelled Lux Radio Theater, a classic radio anthology series, was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934-35) (owned by the National Broadcasting Company, later predecessor of American Broadcasting Company [ABC] in 1943-1945); CBS Radio network (Columbia Broadcasting System) (1935-54), and NBC Radio (1954-55). Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand. (Wikipedia)

I love the LUX advertisements! They give you a good impression of the fashion of those Times. Seems so much more elegant. I would buy lux if IT still existed...

The classic film is also great, and is able to take a little more time to build the suspense. But this radio version is very entertaining.

You know I must have bought the last box of Lux flakes. Put it into a (God forgive me) plastic container, even gave some to a friend who needed to wash the same type of item. Works well & when I fall to sleep the smell is bliss. Thank you for this radio play.

I find the criticism of this program fascinating especially the advertising. These programs started before WWII. This was an era when women surrendered their given name when they married, had no real property rights, credit cards were nonexistent, couldn't serve on a jury. Joined the work force during the war and surrendered their independence to return to being housewives after the war. Of course this show was sexist. But it was one of the most popular shows of its time. The women who started in these plays kept their own names, played women contrary to the norm, helped raise women up. And the advertising, while it feels sexiest now, allowed women to consider their needs at a time when servitude was considered their appropriate role. I know because I'm old enough to have been a child observing my mother and her friends and the changes they were determined to make for themselves and their daughters. And my generation where women boldly joined the workplace. Demanded their rights to own property, have credit cards, serve on jurys, hold political office. Times and seasons......,

I thoroughly enjoyed this radio drama. I'm sorry, but I don't get the problem with the Lux commercials. A woman washing her stockings in Lux? The movie costumes being washed in Lux? What's the ta-do? Should the woman's husband have washed her stockings? Feminise him? I'm surprised that no one complained about the black man's (African/American) roll in this drama. How about we just shut up and listen to these radio dramas and enjoy them, or if you don't, don't listen and find something else that makes you happy.

Robert Mitchum played the role of Robert Taylor’s brother in the movie, but the actor who played him in this play has a voice that is very much like Jeff Chandler, I’ve heard him in other plays and thought it was him, I’ve never heard who the actor was, I’m sure they would have said it was Jeff if he was in this play, he was quite famous at that time I think. Great upload though.

@@TheYorkshirelady It was Jeff Chandler. He was a radio actor ("Our Miss Brooks") and often appeared on Lux Radio Theater. HIs film debut was after this.

They walk you right into the commercial like a little child......next thing you know...lux flakes! The patriarchy and sexism in the commercials is dreadful!

1946.Ollie Moss a different era in case you had not read the write up at the start of the play. That is how life was back in them old days. Oh and just as an afterthought, Lux sponsored these Radio Theatre Plays.

I see you have chosen the life style of the voice of Lucy. It must be hard being a confused person. It must be hard having to feel that you need to fight against things that were, and yet cannot do anything about, but complain about them. If you don't like what you hear, don't listen. I feel bad for you that you have such anguish.
