This large shelter in cathedral quarter was constructed at the start of World War Il in September 1939 and took only one month to complete. The subterranean shelter consists of eight corridors with a width of 1.5 meters and a total length of over 100 metres. Norwich was initially bombed in the summer of 1940 before being heavily targeted again by the German Luftwaffe in the so-called Baedeker raids in the spring / early summer of 1942. During these raids targets such as Norwich Cathedral were chosen for their cultural and historical value rather than for strategic or military purposes. Immediately after World War II the entrances to the bomb shelter were blocked up and the shelter lay out of sight and undisturbed for 75 years. The original stairwell was finally re-opened in 2019 and lighting has subsequently been installed.
