This large shelter in cathedral quarter was constructed at the start of World War Il in September 1939 and took only one month to complete. The subterranean shelter consists of eight corridors with a width of 1.5 meters and a total length of over 100 metres. Norwich was initially bombed in the summer of 1940 before being heavily targeted again by the German Luftwaffe in the so-called Baedeker raids in the spring / early summer of 1942. During these raids targets such as Norwich Cathedral were chosen for their cultural and historical value rather than for strategic or military purposes. Immediately after World War II the entrances to the bomb shelter were blocked up and the shelter lay out of sight and undisturbed for 75 years. The original stairwell was finally re-opened in 2019 and lighting has subsequently been installed.

Fascinating; you've captured how claustrophobic it must have been. I know people who were children during the war, they tell me they can't bear the smell of multi-story carpark stairwells. The smell of damp concrete makes them very uneasy.

Must have been terrifying to be in thoseclaustrophibic tunnels for hours wondering if your house would be standing when you eventually surfaced. Great video.

Hi Sophie - absolutely - must have been very scary for everyone crowded together in the darkness hearing all the noises above - not knowing what they’d be facing when they eventually surfaced - thank-you for commenting and your kind words 🙂

Hi Sylvia 🙂 - thanks again for tuning in and commenting it is very much appreciated. It must have been a dark and gloomy place to spend so much time and the fear as to what lies above the surface when you ascend the stairwell to the outside - a very brave generation of people

Really interesting. The rosary road chalk mines we’re used as air raid shelters too I believe. There must be plenty more in Norwich just waiting to be discovered. Interesting they built that in a month, could you imagine any construction work being done in a month in Norwich now even with our modern machinery ? 😂 Is this open to public or a permission visit, I would be interested to take a look around this myself, anything to do with the cities past fascinates me. Keep the videos coming, I really enjoy this channels content. Ryan

Hi Ryan, I bet there are plenty more secret air raid shelters which remain sealed underneath the city. No chance they could complete something so quickly these days that’s for sure 🙂. The shelter was opened up for visitors last year on selected dates as part of the Heritage Open Days. Cheers for the comments and appreciate the support - kind regards Edward

So I take it that what I was told about the old Tombland toilets being an air raid shelter was true then. Apparently after the war the council didn’t know what to do with it, so built toilets in there, and the sloped walls around the top were built to remember the shape of the sandbags piled up around the entrance. Absolutely crazy that they removed those top walls, it could have been made into a flower bed or something, so that it could still represent the air raid shelter entrance as a tribute. Norwich Council not giving a damn about Norwich history yet again.

It is a shame more of these historic places aren’t cherished. Parts of the old city walls still stand in areas, but despite being in decline the section around Carrow Hill is still spectacular. The air raid shelter featured in the video is located near to the cathedral and is sometimes part of the Norfolk Heritage Open Days held every September 🙂

Hi William - the air raid shelter was opened up for visitors last year on selected dates as part of the Heritage Open Days. The open days are normally held every September so it could be the case this site is included again this year not sure though 🙂
