A woman roams an art gallery -- and remembers her painter father's love and lessons.
UNDERPAINT is used with permission from Anna Hopkins. Learn more at / annabanana_hops .
Anna is a young woman whose beloved father, Tom, passed away. Tom was a successful painter, and Anna now roams art galleries and museums, looking for a specific painting of her, one with a red boat floating on blue water.
As Anna searches, she remembers the lessons her father taught her. Not just about art, but about looking closer and appreciating the world around her. Between the memories and images, Anna discovers just how deeply his love and lessons connect to her life, now that he is gone.
Directed and written by Anna Hopkins, this thoughtful and lyrical short is a hybrid of drama and documentary, based on the late Canadian painter Tom Hopkins and his daughter Anna. Hopkins appears as herself as she roams art galleries and museums, looking for a specific painting that her father made. When she spots a young girl and her father in a gallery, looking at art together, it sparks an emotional odyssey that honors a father's artistry, parental influence and love, still so palpable after his passing.
The film could accurately be filed under the genre of memoir, using the storytelling techniques we associate with fiction to relay someone's emotional experience with an immersive intimacy that serves the film's internal focus well. For a film about an artist, the storytelling is likewise visually accomplished, with luminous light, clear beautiful colors and graceful movements, all of which work together to capture the feel of drifting through memories and thoughts as Anna wanders galleries and museums, looking for her father's art.
Anna's reckoning with her father's influence on her and her art forms the arc of the narrative. We see dramatizations of her conversations as a young girl with her dad, and while they're talking about art, he's also teaching her about perception, sensitivity and interacting with the world around her, seeing it in all of its beauty and textures. Throughout, we see detailed views of Hopkins's art, which is strikingly enigmatic, evocative and compelling -- much like the father's influence on his daughter.
An actress and filmmaker by profession and trade, Hopkins has an appealing and natural thoughtfulness in her screen presence, making her a compelling guide as she winds her way through different memories, thoughts and feelings. The sharpest of these is her grief for his absence from her life. When she finds the painting she is looking for, Anna realizes the space his death has left in her life. But the painting helps her realize that he is in a place far away, and she must let him go.
Lovely, heartfelt and gracefully told, UNDERPAINT is about an artist, but it is also about a daughter trying to keep her father alive for herself and the world. The most poignant objects he left behind -- his artwork -- are the most concrete, solid legacy she grasps. But in the film, she discovers the immensity and value of the less tangible things he gave her: an ability to look closer, to make meaning and to hold the contradictions of life and death together all at once.

"If you're fully aware of the possibility of losing someone you surely could never lose them." This resonated so well. Also when she wanted to keep all of her father's work in one place, and wondering what kind of texter he would be. I liked the idea how she showed her thoughts of him disappearing by someone painting his works white and later her using it as a to do list board, it was nicely done. The ending is a bit like the "Father and Daughter" animated short film, it was really sad. I'm really sorry for the pain she goes through after losing her father.

I don't get the ending, why is that little girl's dad sailing out to sea ⛵ . Is it more of a metaphor for her losing her dad ,as the little girl reminds her of herself? 🤔. And why is her Dad's work getting painted over in white ◻️🫤.
@HopefulMathGirl
@HopefulMathGirl 8 ай бұрын
@@gemstar7286 My interpretation: The little girl is her younger self, and the dad sailing out to the sea is him dying and leaving her, this makes my heart long for something that'll never return. I imagine her holding the little girl is a metaphor for comforting her younger self. Her dad's work is painted over in white shows that some of his paintings are getting lost. Like in the shot before she was looking for the red boat painting and the curator said they didn't have anything like it. You will understand the ending better if you watch the animated short film I mentioned in the comment, "Father and Daughter".

@@HopefulMathGirl I suspected as much that his work was being lost / hard to find ....aww .But at first I thought the little girl just reminded her of her childhood and dad. But now it all makes sense what you're saying ... especially with the ending 👍🏼. I will have to check out that other short story.

@@HopefulMathGirl That was a good point. However I also took it to mean as the years went by she was slowly losing her memory of some of her father's work. Either way it was a very good short.

Anna, this is amazing and touched my soul. My father was the same. Gave me piggy back rides. Taught me to draw and paint. But also how to sail yachts. I had so many flash backs watching you are your dear father Tom. My father Richard has passed away and every time i see a boat i think of him. I still paint, and ironically paint the ocean and myself watching out to sea....as i imagine my father sailing out there...in heaven. I LOVED this short film. Tom Hopkins was a wonderful father. As was my father Richard.

The opening line hit me harder than I was expecting. My Mom went missing when I was 4. I only have a few memories of my Mom and the are so many that are just out of reach. Like her voice. I'd give anything just to hear my Mother's voice.

How do you fight the currents Sweeping about you At every turn and corner How do you justify the time The space the effort Emotional spaces of light How do you find the time in between the chaos and fury Like a dream like a fog How do you continue living When times become Too painful for a grimace How do you remember when Shouts break out and loves Cross embrace lashes out How do you forgive during Times of sorrow and tears Only to remember the joy the warmth. How do continue to be during all these times in between.

So many themes in this gentle story. I think that most of us are stuck putting together an image of our parent when they pass. If they weren't open with themselves, and you find that you are in the dark, it's very painful.

I believe art is something that inspires everyone, the artist paints what he sees, whether it's in front of him or in his imagination, artists, especially painters create the most powerful masterpiece, they show us the beauty of life through their eyes, the real masterpiece is what inspires the art they create.
