Skills like gybing/tacking (and many many others) can have soooo many coaching points!
What also follows below here here is really special though.... the FULL breakdown of ALL the coaching points needed to complete the get back on the water for the summer successfully!
_________________________________________
If you've been following this channel for a while you'll know the first point...
- VISION! I can't stress enough how important is tis to look up, over your shoulder to the wind, turn your head-shoulders-hips-and front foot to look UPWIND, where you want to go!
- TRIM, foot pressure and the balance of the board. The board should be edging toward the wind, heel edge of the board getting wet. Back foot pressure will turn you upwind quickly, then drive through the front foot to speed up and turn slightly off it again.
- Do you need to be hooked in? If there's very little wind stay un-hooked! This allows much more freedom to counterbalance the sail, and play with its position in relation to the wind.
_________________________________________
Filmed on a 103lt Starboard Kode (free-style wave board), and a 5.0m Point-7 Spy. Start of the session I
Wind was a changeable bft 0-4 (2-18knots!).

Hi Cookie, great video as always. It would be nice if you can make another session what to do when overpowered. I am an "planning begginer", just learning how to put front foot to te strap with mixed success :) and recently I was struggling when the wind increased - the board was somehow still turning to the wind. Thanks

@@Cookiesports why do you say mastfoot pressure is bad? If you're overpowered/ superpowered on slalom or freerace gear don't you need to keep the power on for control?
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 2 жыл бұрын
@@horsemadf1 using the term “mast foot pressure” is bad…vague, in-descriptive, unclear and easily misunderstood to do the wrong thing. Keeping the power on, and channeling the rigs for exes by pulling the sail IN, BACK and DOWN. Is mast foot pressure when water-staring the same mast foot pressure what your describing? Or the same mast foot pressure used to get planing initially or when you get into the foot straps? No- completely different things… but people just shout MFP!

I can be quite efficient on starboard, but I struggle with port. It seems I'm almost carvig (well...) the board too much which kind of stalls the speed and thus the finn doesn't kick in. Nice speed tack in no wind. Always the awkward bit after a long slog upwind. I've probably spent as much time plodding as planing in my years. Like you, if there's a gust I'll try a create as much apparent wind as possible to really force the board into wind and gain those precious metres. Also gives your arms a rest.

I’m about 75/80kg. Wind was mixing up between bft 2-4. It’s not easy as the birds get smaller… don’t rush the small kit… it’s often not necessary- a larger bird could do just as well!

When you said "I am now 500m back upwind of where I started" was completely shocked by this - when I am pinching trying to get upwind it feels like I barely make any ground at all, slogging super close hauled. Maybe it is the current and waves here but even in Bonaire where there is no current would always feel like getting upwind was nearly impossible and a good run would be to just about not lose any ground. Is this a case of being too close to the wind do you think? From this video thinking it might be and the trick is to bear away downwind at the right times to get more upwind overall, instead of just sailing as close as possible to the wind for the whole run.
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 2 жыл бұрын
Remember there was key phrase is there… “bear away doesn’t necessarily mean go down wind”… and I was rarely going in a straight line… punching, nibbling and playing with the wind and I made my way along! 👍

Great job again! Thanks a lot. Wind speed? How many knots are you sailing in this video? I am an early intermediate too, my weigh is 70kg and i ride a 135lt freeride board and usually use my 5.3 wave sail because is light and its easier to uphaul it (no waterstart yet). I usually getting planning about 20+ knots. Can i getting planning from 15knots with the right technic? Thanks again!
@joakimhansson1322
@joakimhansson1322 2 жыл бұрын
There are multiple parameters for planing in light winds. Hardware, conditions, handling, rig setup, body etc. Sometimes even your mindset 😉 In light winds like 12-15 knots it helps with a little bit bigger sail. I usually go 7.8 m2, but weigh 95 kg on a 133 litre or JP slw 165 litre. A general popular size is 6.5 m2

Forgot to say Cookie planes easily 🤙 I switched gear on the water with a friend resently. We couldn’t plane. Swiched back an all was fine again. You kind of ”get to know” your own kit.
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Joakim answered it well… it’s not as black & white as “15knots, 5.3m sail will get you planing”. If your having trouble start considering a larger sail.. and watching what kit others in the same conditions are riding. Then consider how much they are heading across or even downwind to get planning.. or can they hold their line and do it (as you’re generally aiming to do!)

I've been windsurfing for close to 40 years but the last four have been a nightmare. In 2017 board designers decided to shorten boards by as much as 15cm's. I purchased two boards of the newest design and I daily struggle to get the new designed boards up on a plane. It's gotten so bad that I've almost quit windsurfing. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I think I’ll need to do a video explaining it…. There a 3 or 4 different occasion when people use the term “fast foot pressure”… but they are entirely different things and very confusing for students to hear. Sometimes it’s used when people are trying to explain how to channel power, sometimes how to control the board when water/beachstarting…. Not the same thing at all!

Very subjective… but I kinda agree. In the conditions I’m working and filing in here I offer use a 103 for my 5.0 & 5.7m, then drop to a 91lt for my 4.2m (or smaller!). However i’m aware that for many people watching this they’d consider a 120 (or possibly even larger) a “small board”… even if they weigh less than me.
