It's a reasonable question to ask why Henning didn't call his family from Morocco, but I'm guessing that people have also forgotten how we used to treat phone calls - long distance calls were really expensive and paid by time to the point where the cheapest of families avoided calling when possible and it wasn't as typical to call home when on vacation, especially if you weren't living with them. Also, we didn't have phones on us all the time. So you had to think of calling when you had time back at wherever you were staying and make sure it was a reasonable time to call with any time difference. Ah, the good old days when you wouldn't get spam calls when you were out and about, lol. But a lot less convenience. Public service announcement to those who weren't around then. :)

I don't know why they were thrown by the "like a niece" concept, I think most of us had/have people that we called/call aunt or uncle that weren't technically aunts and uncles, either friends of the family or people that were technically cousins but because there was a sufficient age gap they'd get called aunt or uncle.
