I think you're actually on the right track, but the roles are flipped. When it began, they were all having fun and enjoying the process like you said. Then the drummer, Damon, found the case full of money, and he is seen throwing it around with joy, dumping it on Devon who is clearly uninterested. He then discovers the money is fake, and in his loss of reward, a mannequin fills his place as the drummer. Following him, Gabby and Henson, the other two, start finding trophies and medallions, leading them down the same road of chasing reward and leaving Devon behind, who is uninterested in their findings as well. Scenes begin showing her very much alone-in the empty parking lot of an abandoned Sears and strengthening the consistent use of "liminal spaces" in the theme. Finally, we see that once Devon is alone in her creation, she is caught in the storm of attention, getting flash photography from unrecognizable figures (clearly without her consent). Lots of flashbacks to when she was having fun with her friends flash on the screen, showing that she just wanted to have fun with their creation. I also think that a lot of the Fishmonger album reflects this in Devon. It's very different from what she's released in the past, and you can tell that it's a project full of passion for what she enjoys. I can't say for sure that Devon has felt this way in particular over the past years, but in the case that she may have, fishmonger may be her way of breaking free from that isolation and attention, going back to making what she wants, and doing that with her friends. You see it in some of her side projects as well- releasing things under six impala more frequently, her summer project Papaya and Friends (who all take part in the production of this video), and doing lots of production for other artists. She's focusing more on what made her passionate about creation. Tl;dr: I think it's the other way around. Her friends all leave her in search of a reward for their efforts, while underscores just wants to create with her friends. Just a theory, of course :P (Edited for clarity & pronouns !)
