Great video like always, but.....Genitiv is explained in a way that can’t be found in the normal declension tables where it would be “to je Auto (of) maminky”. Instead you use the declension of the possessive adjective maminčino or krokodýlova. Both is nominative. 2nd little thing: šalina is (according to my friends and the fact that it’s not in my dictionaries) only used in Brno. 🤣
@slowczech
@slowczech 4 жыл бұрын
🤣🤣 Yes! Very good points, Stefan! You are right about the possessive adjectives. Personally, I hate using genitive for possesion - but I tell it to my students because Czech people say it normally - so I replace "maminky auto" by "maminčino auto" which sounds better to me and sticks better to this English logic. But yes, you are certainly right, it is an adjective and I hope it will not be confusing. But to me in my head it feels like that and as mentionned, this is my way how to see the cases logic. Besides, I dont like grammar tables in step by step/cestina express/... 🤣 Overall, genitive is a very special case expressing this "of" and amount. My goals was to simplify and just show why we have cases and show the logic somehow which was successful since many of my beginner students now tells me that they understand it from this video. So I am very happy :-) As to "šalina", this is my way how to show this "cultural/linguistic war" between Prague and Brno. In France, they have "chocolatine" and "pain au chocolat", in every country you will certainly find another representative word that describes the best the battle between the capital city and 2nd/3rd largest city. And to me, once you know "šalina/tramvaj", you can understand the cheap wine for Pražáky, the inexisting good quality of life in Brno, the D1 to Brno taking 30 days and all the jokes related to Prague/Brno 🤣
@iLearnCzech

@@slowczech It's really a bit unfortunate and confusing to claim that "krokodýlova" and "maminčino" is the genitiv case just because you don't like using it... As it's wrong. And considering that your videos now have it in their titles in the wrong word order... "Petry... something" Well, I wouldn't teach a foreigner something like that. Otherwise, nice ;-)

Hi! I am currently learning the cases and am struggling to memorize them all 😭 do you have any tips on it??
@slowczech
@slowczech 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Ami, of course! --1-- Firstly, know that even if you are chosing the incorrect ending, we understand you. Wrong case/wrong ending doesnt change the meaning of what you are saying (which is not the same as with verbs). --2-- Secondly, you need to learn them gradually, meaning that it can take you 6 months or 10 months or 2 years to master them, because simply you will not hurry and your brain will have enough time to get used to the ending in this particular situation. --3--Thirdly, learn them in context + create your own model sentences that you like. Example for accusative feminine sigular ending with -a: "Miluju zmrzlinu" and than you will want to say "I hate school" do you have "školu" or I thank for love "děkuju za lásku". Etc. --4-- Eventually, even Czech people do not use the correct endings, so dont be too hard on yourself :-D :-D (y)

Eliska SlowCZECH Thank you for your reply! So do you think it’s better to memorize the declensions by tables or by reading and listening a lot and get the patterns unconsciously? which way do you think is better in order to get them as fast as possible?
@slowczech
@slowczech 4 жыл бұрын
@@ami0362 well it depends on many aspects. but mostly on your motivation and if you like learning by heart and if this works for you. it does for some people. but for most of the students work hearing and reading and saying it 1000x. You would never say Dobrou den / or Jednu pivem prosím.

@@slowczech Děkuji vám za vaši odpověď :-) Very few of them come natural sometimes without thinking about it when i try to speak (thinking wouldn't help anyway since i don't know the theory behind it). I have tried to learn a few cases in the past but it was too overwelming for me personally. I've been just sticking with learning new words, watching czech tv, reading texts which are not too complicated and listen to alot of real life conversations. But I am determined to learn them once I feel like I'm ready! :-) 99% of the people in my environment only speak Czech, which gives me great daily exposure to the language. I can express myself very basic, but as i always say to my conversation partner: Mluvím trochu český. Znám hodně slovo, ale nemám lepídlo dělat správné věty a konversace.
@slowczech

@@andreash3906 My partner is a foreigner. He has never known what those cases are and what they are good for. Yet, he makes phone calls in Czech (vet car service...), he gets angry at a non professional assistant in the hospital in Czech, etc. I disagree that it is necessary to need learn the cases. Of course, 90% of the students want to learn them. That's why this simple video. But as Stephen Krashen says, getting enough exposure and input, as you have, is crucial for a successful language acquisition. So you are doing it great! Just continue. Kids need years. Why would adult need just 2 or 3 years? Zdravím z Brna. A myslím, že máš dobre lepidlo na slova. Úsměv a gestikulace stačí. Postupně to bude lepší a lepší! 👏👏👏

There are also the pronouns who and whom. One replaces a subject and the other an object when they are people. English cases seem to just be used to prevent confusion between people. You gave yourself rather than you gave you. He gave him or himself. Who gave whom. Etc.

Pokud se nemýlím, tak „krokodýlova“ není genitiv podstatného jména „krokodýl“, ale přídavné jméno odvozené od slova „krokodýl“. Genitiv podstatného jména „krokodýl“ je „krokodýla“ (koho, čeho). Horší než něco neumět je umět něco špatně!

@davidemiozzi8589

@@slowczech Sure, though I don't see much feelings in linguistics: it's more of a science. Declensions are a typical way of Indo-European languages to attach grammatical function to a word, by means of a suffix. As sometimes the added meaning of a single suffix is not enough, some languages have evolved using concatenation of suffixes, while most have picked up prefixes, such as prepositions. It is an ongoing process: in English, for example, the forms thou (nominative), thee (accusative), thy (genitive) has turned into the single form: you, but cases still exists for "I" and "he". German still has cases for certain situations. Romance languages, all coming directly from Latin, have gone through a similar process: from 6 cases to basically none. It is quite possible that Czech could go the same way: already there are cases having the same form for most words, but I'm definitely not an expert in Czech. I can only hope about it: less to study :D :D
