Well, this does sound complicated BUT wait before you turn off!! How does the "Inverse Square Law of Light" affect your photography?
Using both myself and our lovely model Sophie, I demonstrate and explain the theory in understandable terms.

This was a really clear demonstration of some of the effects of increasing the distance to the lightsource, decreased intensity, fall off and softness of light.

Man I love your tutorials, y can't imagine how much I suffered because of this my main problem was when I use black backdrop I makeup photography it never comes really black, after million try and error I found that if I move the light close to the model face I will need less light to probably exposes her face so the background will be fully black.

LOL You made her take her heels off :-) Too funny! Good video. I see many beginners that put their subjects too close to the background which will make your shadows much harsher. Do a video of the different lighting ratios like 2:1, 3:1 ect. that would be a good learning video for new photographers starting to shoot portraits. Love the videos Karl.

Thanks for the explanation Karl... but I have a Question, I hope you could answer it for me, (this doubt is because I might not want to change my settings in my camera (ISO 100, F11, 1/100 (this is just an example)). You explained that with the source close to both of you, the fall of light is very harsh on you and your model is well exposed, and if the source of light is far away from both of you guys you are well exposed, but what happens if my source of light is far, and I increase de power of it? (to keep my settings) the final result would be the same if I have the source closer but with less intensity? or it only depends on the distance?

Hi Karl, you are obviously right in what you are saying here in the video but as well as the relative distances becoming more similar as you move the light away the model obscures the light from you less also contributing to your better illumination. When do you move studios BTW?
@VisualEducationStudio
@VisualEducationStudio 10 жыл бұрын
Hi 101blog, we kept the light at a 45degree angle to both of us so Sophie didn't put me in her shadow. The most important point to make about the distant light is that it will be 'apparently' smaller which will create a harder light. Moving to the new studio in October. Cheers Karl.

Very nice video, so if you move your light further away to get a correct exposure for a group shot how do you deal with the hardness of light? "Further the light the harder it gets" I know this scenario is a bit extreme and you wanted to show or prove a point so you positioned the light in a 45 degree angle and you could probably position it more straight on and don't have to back away so much to get both objects lit the same, but how about feathering the light "point the light at distant person and measure the light on the closest person?" Would this do the trick and don't need to back away 10mts?
@VisualEducationStudio
@VisualEducationStudio 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Andres, you are right the further away then the apparent size of the light will be smaller and the light will be harder. You can overcome this by using large modifiers, soft boxes or scrims. However the example i demonstrated was pretty extreme to show the principle. It could be closer with a large modifier or two lights or reflectors or a combination of things to make it work.
@AndresCuervoArt
@AndresCuervoArt 10 жыл бұрын
***** Thank you Karl for the quick response, how about feathering the light would this help solve the exposure problem with groups, without having to make the light harder and further away? It would also be a nice tutorial on how softness of light caused by feathering it can affect the image.

how important it is to have a high roof studio? is it better to a normal room roof?
@VisualEducationStudio
@VisualEducationStudio 10 жыл бұрын
I'd say very important because you may want to position your lights high and you also want to avoid unwanted reflected light. If you have a low studio ceiling you could consider painting it black or having some black draw sheets.
@tazzzx

***** thanks for the info.. thats what i have in mind but im lookin for a place to open my own studio and unfortunately every single one of them i found available is normal high roof or low! and cos im quite desperate i thought it will be good to hear some other opinions on that! painting black is quite a good idea .. thanks again and thanks for all the videos and tips u r giving us! ! !

Actually, this is not a demonstration of the inverse square law, per se. The difference in light between the two subjects, as depicted, will decrease as the light is moved away no matter how the power of the light falls off with distance. Very useful information and demonstration but not necessarily having anything to do with ISL behavior.

Whats the point in using something like a fill light then? could you not just use 1 light and move it really far back?
@VisualEducationStudio
@VisualEducationStudio 3 жыл бұрын
When you move a light really far back it becomes very in apparent size from the subjects perspective. As such that light will then only render very harsh sharp shadows and specular highlights.
