In the video we talk about the function of a voltage regulator, battery CAR (Charge Acceptance Rate), and why cruising boats should upgrade their charging systems. One great, new 'Very Smart' product from WakeSpeed is the WS500 regulator, it's a really good improvement in voltage regulation.
We didn't cover all of the features of the WS500 - check out their website for full details. It really is the best voltage regulator you can put on your boat, RV, etc.

I was curising through KZfaq looking for info on the Wakespeed regulator and came across this video and my first thought was "I recognize that wall!" I am the Structural Engineer who designed your building.

@@SVCSkallywags Isn't it though! So far, I do not have a wake speed. I have built a 560Ah DIY LFP battery for my sailboat in a 2p4s configuration and have modified and upgraded my old Hear Interface InCharge regulator to limit the output of my 108A Ample Power alternator to 60A and added a thermostatic controlled cutoff to limit the case temperature to 100ºC, but the White Space feature would be really nice.

Glad you liked it! I took many years of teaching electrical to come up with that, but it helps many understand!

Excellent presentation. After 40 years working in the field finally a "system" taking into account most factors in having reliable and efficient DC power aboard. Particularly like your parking garage analogy in charging batteries. Looking into using MG alternators and WS regulators in future projects. Your colorful shirt kept my attention throughout.

Glad it was helpful! Putting that setup on my boat this Spring. Took about 10 years of teaching to get that lesson worked out...

Great video. I have 2 lithium batteries in my travel trailer and with the winter short days, my two 100 amp solar panels don't keep up. I am researching ways to increase my battery bank and keep them charged. Recharging them via the truck alternator can be an option. Thank you for explaining this so well.

Which batteries are you going to use? Woody, Art, & I also going that route. Would be fun to chat batteries this Fall, send a note and we'll plan a 'staff meeting'

@@SVCSkallywags We are leaning towards Battleborn. I saw Will Prowse on YT tear down a battleborn and I was impressed with the construction. Open to other suggestions though and would love to discuss at a staff meeting! We are also interested in the Wakespeed regulator.

Thank you for the video. Sold me on the wakespeed to protect my lithium batteries and high output alternator. I really hope you fallow up with ways to connect in a charging method for a AGM starting and bow thruster batteries off the same high output alternator.

We are currently designing same system for King's Pride. Victron B2B {Battery to Battery} chargers work great for this application. Also, the price is very reasonable!

Hi! I’m looking at setting up the Wakespeed with an MG1 at 48V. I’m looking to add in an extra alternator protection device incase of sudden disconnect. Could you recommend a solution? Thanks

I'm not sure - everything we use is 12 or 24 volt, so Balmar and Sterling make protection equipment, but I haven't looked into any 48 volt stuff. It's exciting, as we are seeing lots more 48 volt equipment for boats!!

Great video guys. I also have a mark grasser alternator (140a) that I want to hook up my WS500 to. Any chance you could share your hook up terminations to the alternator? Thanks for any info. Myron

Myron, We took that unit apart about 3 months after the install, we had three different alternators on it. The Yanmar, the M.G., and an awesome APS (American Power Systems). The alternator wiring was standard blue for the field and white for the tech. Then the 3 big leads run to the stand alone diode pack. I'm gather some data about how cool (i.e. low temps) these alternators run out - video out this fall. -Mike
