Using English in pool can be a useful technique for controlling the direction of the cue ball after it makes contact with the object ball. Here are some tips for using English effectively:
- Determine the direction of the cue ball: Before you apply English, it's important to know the direction the cue ball will travel after striking the object ball. This will help you to determine the type and amount of English needed.
- Use the correct amount of English: Applying too much English can cause the cue ball to go off-course, while too little can result in no effect at all. Start with small amounts of English and gradually increase the amount as you gain experience and confidence.
- Adjust your aim: When using English, you will need to aim slightly off-center to compensate for the cue ball's movement after it hits the object ball. The amount and direction of the adjustment will depend on the type of English you use.
- Practice: Using English takes practice and patience. It's important to experiment with different types and amounts of English to find what works best for you. As you practice, you will gain a better understanding of how English affects the cue ball.
- Learn from others: Watch and learn from experienced pool players. They can offer valuable tips and advice on using English effectively.
Remember that using English is just one aspect of playing pool, and should be used sparingly and strategically. Practice regularly and focus on mastering the basics of the game before incorporating advanced techniques like English.
From this pool lesson you can learn:
- what is back hand english
- what is front hand english
- what is deflection
- how to use this aiming system in different situation
- comparison of high and low deflection shafts
- how to practice bhe & fhe

Great Videos Adam, the only thing you don't show with the camera, the point of impact of the object ball using left or rt side spins. It will be great if you make another video just showing the point of impact using, lt rt low left and lower right contact points. Appreciated all you do, thanks, you are my biggest fan. Thanks, keep up the good work,

Thank you!!! Maybe yes but there are two big differences between. I prepared my own feelings which values working on my shaft and results are different and the biggest difference is that I made comparison of values between wooden and carbon shaft and this is really helpful to see differences. I didn't see any detailed guide with similar results😊

This is a good video on BHE and FHE. Yes, starting at 6:48, this is a direct implementation of Dr. Dave's SAWS (System for Aiming With Sidespin) system using those particular two high and low deflection cues. Every cue is different and will produce different BHE/FHE values (as Dr. Dave's materials show). The general, overall BHE/FHE number pattern, however, will be the same, with higher BHE values needed for shorter and/or faster shots, for higher deflection cues, and for longer bridge lengths. It all comes down to the geometric relationships of the BHE/FHE pivot angles to the cue's Natural Pivot Length (NPL) and the bridge length used, a topic on which I have a couple videos. Object ball throw and the amount of cue elevation (which will change the amount of swerve) are additional factors to consider.

Hello, you’re videos are really helping me understand many pool concepts. I greatly appreciate your methodical approach to showing each situation in many different ways. Question: As I’ve been learning pool, I’ve been often told that I should never adjust my aim, cue stick, etc. when I get down on a shot. Once I have my aiming line, then any adjustments while down on the shot can negatively impact my shot. BHE and FHE seem to be systems that absolutely contradict this by purposely moving after getting down on the shaft. I’m curious if this is actually something that professionals use in tournaments? Or are these techniques essentially “quick-fixes” for people who don’t have the time to pot 1 million balls to obtain proper feel?

Thank you very much for your comment. BHE & FHE didn't have impact on our body if we do it correctly. Situation is different if you get down to the shot and then you are changing position of legs or bridge. Then you will not be able to hit on the correct line. Mamy pool players adjust their shots automatically based experience and on many shots made in the past🙏

Great vid. Question: when using BHE in combination with the FHE do we need to use the natural pivot point with the BHE
@MrCueBall
@MrCueBall 7 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment. This type of aiming is greatly influenced by the length of the bridge because it will significantly change the final aiming point. You simply need to first move the stick without moving the bridge, i.e. give BHE, and then do the same only for FHE, i.e. this time move the cue stick without changing the grip position.

When shooting for bank and rail kick with english, do also use/apply FHE & BHE?
@MrCueBall
@MrCueBall 10 ай бұрын
Then this is not necessary because you are using side spin to change path of the object ball after contact with rail.

but does BHE and FHE also apply to making safety shot with English where u want to control the cue ball ? say u have a long shot u want to play a safety on .

Of course you can use it but in my opinion this is not necessary in this situation because we otfen do this automatically during these situations.

Appreciate for your video , can i have one question : "Can we adjust the length of bridge hand on different type of shoot ( like Short , medium , long distance ) instead of the combination of BHE and FHE " ?? Thank you .
@MrCueBall
@MrCueBall Жыл бұрын
This is really difficult thing what you said. I saw in my own tests that if you play long distance shot then if you will use long bridge and play BHe then deflection is much lower than with classic bridge. There isn't special key for this and no one can tell you what system and what bridge you should use on this specific shot. We are using different kind os cues with different deflection and only hard practice can show you what you can play on each shot :) I hope that this is understandable for you because my english is not perfect :)

@@MrCueBall thanks for your reply . It's understandable . I agree with when use high speed shot with BHE , the cue ball swerve is low and squirt is high . So In my case , i used to adjust the length of my bridge hand when apply bhe in different distance . ( eg : for long distance shot , i will shorten my bridge hand / pivot for ) The result is quite good in few practice game 😅😅.

@@giaoconhuynh7330 Does that mean you only use BHE? for long shots, 'shorten bridge length' is roughly 0.4 ft or lower?
@IOnianStreams
@IOnianStreams 9 ай бұрын
Yes, instead of changing the BHE/FHE numbers, one can vary the bridge length to accomplish the same thing. For the same tip offset, using a shorter bridge length is equivalent to applying more BHE at the original, un-shortened bridge. For example, say for a particular shot you need 70% BHE at bridge length of 11 inches (with 30% FHE to apply the desired total sidespin). You could instead use a bridge length of 8 inches and apply only 50% BHE for the same result (with 50% FHE). This equates to a cue with a 14 inch natural pivot length (NPL) and assumes a faster/shorter shot; i.e. negligible swerve. But every cue is different because the NPL changes. Of course, it's not always possible to use the bridge length you want so you need to know how to adjust the BHE/FHE too.

YOU MUST FIRST DETERMINE THE PIVOT POINT OF YOUR CUE'S SHAFT . WHEN YOU PIVOT EXACTLY AT THIS PIVOT POINT THEN THERE IS NO DEFLECTION USING BHE OR FHE.

Sorry, but this is crazy! As a mediocre pool player you already struggle with aiming and then you should in addition add % in different english types? :-) Well, I honestly appreciate your work here, don´t get me wrong, but how practical is this?

What is crazy? BHE & FHE are methods which we know from the years. This is episode with explanation of each system and how it works in reality🙏
@IOnianStreams
@IOnianStreams 6 ай бұрын
@Vincentitto. I hear ya! But I would answer your question with another question: What is the alternative and how practical is that? The main alternative to the BHE/FHE methodological approach is simply to experiment trial-and-error with all the different side spin shot scenarios until -- somehow, someday -- you figure it out. Is that more "practical"? Maybe it is, for some people. The point is that adding side spin to your game introduces many new variables that need to be controlled. There's no avoiding it!

Hi... just one thing that still confuses me. On a non left or right english shot - I aim at the center of the ghost ball behind the object ball towards the pocket (simple enough), but now if i apply BHE or FHE, should i still look at the original position of the ghost ball? or the ghost ball also moves to a new location to which where i should be looking at before hitting the shot? Sorry if im not making sense here.
@MrCueBall
@MrCueBall Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your opinion! Ghost Ball is always in the same place because you need to hit the cue ball exactly on this point to pot object ball but you need to adjust your aiming to hit the cue ball in correct point. Of course there is Cut Induced Throw or Spin Induced Throw what slightly can change trajectory of the object ball. BHE & FHE are two really different aiming adjustment methods and for me I didn;t use any of them in my game. I have experience and know what can I expect from my cue and apply spin automatically for each kind of shot. This require a lot of practice to understant what will happen with the cue ball and object ball after different shots :) I hope that this answer is understandable for you :)
