In this video, we're diving into the different types of network switches. Whether you want to expand your network by adding a switch or are just curious about the various options available, this video is for you!
🔹 Unmanaged Switches: These are plug-and-play devices like the TP-Link 8-port switch. They're budget-friendly and require no configuration. However, they lack control and security features.
🔹 Managed Switches: Managed switches, like the Cisco model shown, offer advanced features including VLANs, bandwidth management, and quality of service (QoS). They come with a console port for configurations and provide enhanced security.
🔹 Power Over Ethernet (PoE) Switches: PoE switches, available in both managed and unmanaged versions, power devices like CCTV cameras and Wi-Fi access points through the Ethernet cable. This simplifies installation as no separate power source is needed.
In this tutorial, we’ll:
Compare unmanaged and managed switches.
Explore the features of a TP-Link managed switch with a graphical user interface (GUI).
Demonstrate the functionality of a PoE switch.

For just connecting a gaming console and streaming devices a simple unmanaged switch is fine right? To get 100% of my internet speed are there switches better than others or they simply allow my speed to be routed where its needed? Noob questions but never needed one before.

Big Question, does a switch work as a signal extender as well?
@MagnumCarta
@MagnumCarta 4 жыл бұрын
If by "signal extender" you mean something along the lines of increasing coverage for a wireless signal, then no, a switch does not work as a signal extender. If you mean "does a switch increase the distance a signal can move (over 'hops')", then yes, a switch can be seen as a "signal extender" with that kind of context. The problem that requires "signal extension" for wireless frequencies is known as "attenuation". You can think of attenuation like ripples in a pond. They start small and close together but as they spread out from the center, the distance between each wave also spreads out and a high-frequency signal degrades into a lower frequency signal where it is no longer perceived by a receiver device. A wifi signal extender essentially listens in for a frequency and then mimicks that frequency out of its antenna. A switch on the other hand almost universally always uses cabling whether that is traditional ethernet cables (e.g. CAT5, CAT6, etc) or a different type of cable (examples include: SFP+, Fibre-Channel, etc). Cables generally have shielding around them to help protect the signal from attenuation. However very, very long cables can run into issues due to how voltage drops across a line over time for DC power (AC power is used to extend the range of how far electricity can move without having to run through a transformer).

Does POE switches have dedicated ports for POE functions or do all the ports have the POE capabilities?
@MagnumCarta
@MagnumCarta 4 жыл бұрын
Great question. In general, yes, but it is always best practice to check the technical documentation for a POE switch you are considering purchasing. Keep in mind though that POE compatible devices have to use very low power ratings (along the lines of 15.4 Watts). This is fine for most IP cameras but not many other devices.
