Facinating and helpful! Working on a phd in ecclesiastical ethnography, looking at the groups that made up northeast Georgia (usa) and their faith practices, and how they merged to create todays Appalachian culture and faith in that area. This video has helped me understand this aspect of ethnographies. As a former Navy Chaplain, we are officers and professionals: gaining acceptance into say, a Marine Corps infantry battalion or a Coast Guard aviation squadron can be difficult. The ones who can, the ones who do "deckplate ministry", or get out on the decks of the unit, are the outsiders who become insiders, and thus have the greatest impact as chaplains. Ad one chaplain said "if you look around and see the other guys with scuffed up boots, you might want to kick your boots on something to scuff them up too".

Thanks for making this stunning knowledgeable video. I love it and definitely will check outlander later. The concept of Emic and Etic has been affected me to view the social groups of "ingroup" and "outgroup". We all long to find our belongings and try our best to formulate a group that we can jump into. I would appreciate a basic unit of "home" in our society. Siblings in my life are such a gift cuz those people who we grow up together with are a natural ingroup with a character of being emic. Sometimes, I don't mind if I have to be in the outgroup in order to maintain my unique mindset to observe the world. It's not just about "right or wrong", it is about social psychology. Thanks again, shared on FB and subscribed to this channel.

Thanks so much for the very kind post, Catherine. Outlander (or at least the first few seasons of Outlander) are a total joy to watch. My conversations with old colleagues about the show were one of the driving factors in starting the channel. So I do hope you enjoy. Really happy to hear that the video was helpful!
