Researchers uncovered a novel mechanism involving DNA methylation affecting E-cadherin expression, disrupting epithelial integrity. By targeting epigenetic modifications with 5-aza-29-deoxycytidine (AZA), they restored tissue integrity in COPD-affected lungs.
