My gelding in 2011 was struck from lightening and he within an hour was suffering from extreme colic and was violently rolling and crashing to the ground i was able to get a vet and got him to the clinic.. where he a few days later ended up foundering and we were able to get the farrier on board asap and was able to treat it using specific shoeing methods.. my gelding is now 28 and suffers mentally during thunder and lightening storms and has started to colic during these times of stress.. i believe that horses memories are long term and so if a horse is under such a condition the owners must pay closer attention to their horses and be ready at all times to remedy their situations and having multiple vets phone #'s on a board or somewhere near the horse for easy access is essential because walking a horse who is in distress does not always allow you to go searching for #'s let alone dialing them so if you can put them on your cell phone on speed dial!! Luckily weve only had 1 vet call and ive been able to handle the situation myself through some guidance over the phone!! I found this article very accurate and informative and recommended every horse owner or enthusiasts to watch it just may save a horses life!!! Thank you for sharing this video!!

My gelding had to be put down due to sesamoiditis 2 months ago... just a few weeks later my beloved mare passed away of a severe colic she actually herniated, & all of the tissue of her small intestine pushed through a tear in her abdominal wall & went necrotic...they tried so hard to save her, but it was just too much dead tissue. The vet said it was a combination of her being severely neglected as a young filly (she was being fed dollar store dog food, nothing else, she was pregnant, & skin & bones. I got her from that horrendous place when she was just 3 years. I still have her baby {now 13}) this neglect during critical growth weakened the lining of her intestines & her abdominal wall.. Then the stress of losing her brother so suddenly (my gelding whom I rescued with her when he was 2) The combination proved fatal, she was eating & drinking fine the night before, acting 100% normal...the next morning she was in the final stages of her colic...I wish I had been there to catch her colic when it started that night...but sometimes these things happen when we can't be there to help. Sorry to write a book. Correct me if I'm misinformed on anything... I'm just looking for closure...she was my baby girl...

...a daily ration of bran is cheap insurance against impaction especially for those inclined to colic and works good for their owners too...

I have a horse at UGA right now with colitis and an impaction. It's terrifying but I know he's in good hands. His colic symptoms were so mild that if I didn't know his behaviors well enough I wouldn't have caught it in time. We're not out of the woods yet!
