उपनिषद् हिन्दू धर्म के महत्त्वपूर्ण श्रुति धर्मग्रन्थ हैं। ये वैदिक वाङ्मय के अभिन्न भाग हैं। ये संस्कृत में लिखे गये हैं। इनकी संख्या लगभग १०८ है, किन्तु मुख्य उपनिषद १३ हैं। हर एक उपनिषद किसी न किसी वेद से जुड़ा हुआ है। इनमें परमेश्वर, परमात्मा-ब्रह्म और आत्मा के स्वभाव और सम्बन्ध का बहुत ही दार्शनिक और ज्ञानपूर्वक वर्णन दिया गया है।
Upanishads are important Shruti scriptures of Hindu religion. These are an integral part of Vedic literature. These are written in Sanskrit. Their number is about 108, but the main Upanishads are 13. Every Upanishad is associated with one or the other Veda. In these, a very philosophical and knowledgeable description of the nature and relation of God, Paramatma-Brahman and Atman has been given.
ब्रह्म, जीव और जगत्‌ का ज्ञान पाना उपनिषदों की मूल शिक्षा है। भगवद्गीता तथा ब्रह्मसूत्र, उपनिषदों के साथ मिलकर वेदान्त की 'प्रस्थानत्रयी' कहलाते हैं।
The basic teaching of the Upanishads is to get the knowledge of Brahman, Jiva and the world. The Bhagavad Gita and the Brahmasutras together with the Upanishads are called the 'Prasthanatrayi' of Vedanta.
उपनिषद् शब्द का साधारण अर्थ है - ‘समीप उपवेशन’ या 'समीप बैठना
अर्थार्त:- ब्रह्म विद्या की प्राप्ति के लिए शिष्य का गुरु के पास बैठना। उपनिषद् में ऋषि और शिष्य के बीच बहुत सुन्दर और गूढ संवाद है जो पाठक को वेद के मर्म तक पहुंचाता है।
उपनिषद् गुरु-शिष्य परम्परा के आदर्श उदाहरण हैं। प्रश्नोत्तर के माध्यम से सृष्टि के गूढ़ रहस्यों का उद्घाटन उपनिषदों में सहज ढंग से किया गया है। विभिन्न दृष्टान्तों, उदाहरणों, रूपकों, संकेतों और युक्तियों द्वारा आत्मा, परमात्मा, ब्रह्म आदि का स्पष्टीकरण इतनी सफलता से उपनिषद् ही कर सके हैं।
The simple meaning of the word Upanishad is 'near upavesana' or 'sitting near
Meaning :- For the attainment of Brahma Vidya, the disciple sits near the Guru.

Upanishads are perfect examples of Guru-shishya Tradition Through the question and answer, the deep secrets of the universe have been inaugurated in the Upanishads in an easy way. Only the Upanishads have been able to explain the soul, the Supreme Soul, the Brahman etc. so successfully through various illustrations, examples, metaphors, hints and tips.
उपनिषदों की संख्या लगभग १०८ है जिनमें से प्रायः १३ उपनिषदों को मुख्य उपनिषद् कहा जाता है। मुख्य उपनिषद, वे उपनिषद हैं जो प्राचीनतम हैं । इनका रचनाकाल ८०० ईसापूर्व से लेकर ईसवी सन के आरम्भ तक माना जाता है। वह 13 उपनिषद इस प्रकार है।

The number of Upanishads is about 108, out of which usually 13 Upanishads are called the main Upanishads. The main Upanishads are the Upanishads which are the oldest and which have been studied more. Their creation period is believed to be from 800 BC till the beginning of AD.
