A video essay and character analysis of Paterson. Directed and written by Jim Jarmusch released in 2016 and starring Adam Driver.
Paterson is a bus driver living in Paterson New Jersey. We follow Paterson through one week in his life. A lover of poetry the movie explores his relationship with the art form and his relationship with the people around him. Paterson lives with his partner Laura and their dog Marvin. A movie about the normality of life Paterson is crafts a wonderful story about what life and art can teach us.
Poems written by me.

When Paterson writes about the 4th dimension (time), I believe the movie is giving us a hint about the ending. The Japanese man to me seems like a time traveler and he is a big fan of Paterson. The Japanese man acted like he knew Paterson. Maybe in the future even after Paterson passes away, all his poems are collected. Maybe the man knew about his daily sits at waterfall bench. Maybe “Aha” he kept saying is one of Paterson’s famous poems

I’m no intellectual but that’s very interesting that meeting at the waterfall bridge seemed very purposeful. As soon as his book is destroyed this man appears with many odes to Paterson and presents him with a new open book to fill. Like he had enough life experience to finally right something meaningful. And the man never asked him his name like he already knew his name and that he was indeed a poet even if he claimed not to be.

@@monkeyman8265 Maybe to the Japanese guy also felt it as a poetic place in a poetic city just like Paterson. Maybe felt something poetic about him or maybe not. But what i think is that with every ”Aha!” the Japanese guy is believing more and more that Paterson actually it is interested in poetry (why would Paterson know so much about poets so much). And so decided to give to out protagonist the notebook. :)

Great review. I think Laura dreaming about twins and then him seeing twins everywhere also demonstrated how life, even the most "mundane" life, can be poetic, if we'll but look around and pay attention.

The Army photo of Paterson on his nightstand i realized added a lot more story on why Paterson is who he is maybe. He served in the Army and he probably saw and witnessed enough to know that life isnt that bad as it is when comparing it to war, which can also add a lot on why Paterson is quiet but yet doesn’t take things so seriously as one normally would in this world. Crazy that Adam Driver literally DID serve in the Army, but nonetheless this movie has so many clues that leave you pondering and learning something.
@filmisjustmovingpictures

I like that theory. Also Paterson de-armed his friend who had a gun which plays nicely into your idea of serving in the army. And I like that because he has seen war he understand life is too short for squabbles. Just like the director said, Paterson has zen like qualities.

I think the movie resonates because like Paterson many of us feel unfulfilled in life living a daily grind doing things we don’t want to do for things we don’t really need. And we route for him to be happy or obtain what he is searching for.

I really like this movie and after watching it a few times I felt Paterson wanted his book to be destroyed. He was conflicted by the promise he made to copy it (and then it can be seen by others.) so unlike all the other times he didnt leave it downstairs but on the couch. I'm not sure he knew it would be Martin but a self fullfilling event. I think he struggles with the idea of whether he is a bus driver or a poet and when seemingly forced to cross that bridge preferred to be the bus driver. However once experiencing the loss of purpose the Japanese man helped him understand he is both a poet and a bus driver. There are a lot of interesting themes in the movie and I dont fully understand it but this is one part I interpreted.

I just watched the movie with my mom, before I read comments, I want to leave what we took from the movie.. at the beginning we liked all characters, we love the artistic ways of his girl. Then as soon as they’ve introduced what is “her style” we started to get overwhelmed by it. Something we both noted on was the lack of backstories (which I appreciate sometimes). Is this his house? Her house? Everything in the house, even the dog, the car, has her paintbrush strokes of hers on it.. what in this house is him? Nothing.. The Brussels sprout pie was an interesting moment... he’s choking down something that he dislikes just to keep normality. I would say keep the peace but she doesn’t seem like she’d be angry, just disappointed.. there is reference of harlequin guitar, that he calls “joker” in a scene. We looked up harlequin for the original definition and both were interested that it’s someone who wears a mask traditionally. Also traditionally wearing diamond pattern. Laura (his wife) wears black and white always, and the longer the movie goes on the more layering of patterns we see. She seemed off to my mom and me for some reason and I feel like I’ll get hate for this 😂 she seemed to view him as her cushion. He was soft, accepting, non challenging.. predictable, non confrontational.. perfect for her to cushion her endless pursuits of identity on.. she was... artsy... and wanted to hear about his day but.. never asked if he was “okay” like a lot of other characters did.. I think the constant “how are you” made us as the audience think... “ I think so I’m good... not sure yet..” I think when it came down to it, they had little in common... it was a comfortable place, as in when his journal was destroyed, he had no purpose. It was almost as though he became sober, his outlet/coping mechanism was gone. He realized he had no identity, besides this small book... I immediately went “GET HIM A NEW JOURNAL”.. but she didn’t... someone else did.. someone who seems very mysterious, but believes in him.. he didn’t even have a cell phone.. which he said was his choice, but you see how he felt powerless trying to help the people on his bus when he had to borrow a child’s phone? I took away, one, that he is more than he treats himself/is treated to be, and also that it’s not the end of the road to be destroyed, it’s a fresh start.. thanks if ya read this 😊

When watching this film, Paterson is nowhere near, synonymously close to being a pushover, as it is quite easily to view him from that perspective. The scene where he seem like he did not enjoy Brussel Sprouts Pie by Laura, was just a moment where he did not care much to even finish the meal, because he was more engaged in the conversation he and Laura were having, while he was just sitting there, looking around, like he normally does, through out the entire film. Paterson's just a Zen-minded person. Also, Paterson doesn't always comply with Laura. In the scene when he says "... words are written on water." after his writings were perished by Marvin. He doesn't mind the loss of his art being destroyed, because he will just make new ones. He was hurt a bit, but got over it after a short period of time and just moved on. Which is also the reason why he doesn't oblige to Laura persistently suggesting him to publish his writings. He clearly doesn't want to, although he does agree with Laura on how awesome the idea is. He never will comply. More noteworthy than that, he doesn't even let Laura read his poems. He'll read a few, but not as much as you would think he would, hence the notionality that he writes a lot. Laura's constantly wondering what goes on in his head or in his book of writings, but he never shares it with her. It's almost like a subtle-game they play with one another. Seemingly, the scene when there was an "electrical problem" with the bus-Paterson seem to have handled himself well. He parked the bus, had everyone evacuate the bus in an orderly-like fashion, made sure everyone was fine mentally and physically, he assumed someone would have a mobile phone and the issue was taken care of by is PSA on how another bus will arrive shortly. Paterson (and Adam Driver) once served in USMC, and the way he handled the bus and it's "electrical problem", Everett holding up the bar with a toy-gun, and when the Blood gang-members pulled up their vehicle next to him and Marvin, he seem to keep his cool and smirk or chuckled in all three situation. Paterson's a light-hearted man. There are scenes where Laura did seem tired, sick, or disoriented. Maybe it was the actress being played by Golshifteh Farahani, maybe that is Laura's personality, or that is part of the directors view for the character Laura, to leave the viewer in wonderment. Overall, she seem like a pretty laid back person, which goes well with Paterson. That's just Jim Jarmusch's approach for the films he directs. He leaves it open for the viewers to critically think in wonderment of what is going on. You should check out his other films.

I believe Patterson doesn't "really" or "actively" want to write. He mostly wants to please Laura and struggles to satisfy all her visions, including that of him being a poet. The way her desires shapes Paterson's life is what to me explain the appearing of the twins. Also, when his notebook is destroyed, Paterson is clearly relieved. He is even thankful to his dog. And when he meets the japanese poet, he says he's not a poet. After the japanese poet waks away, Paterson finally writes a poem for himself, one that finally begs the question of who he is after all.

what struck me most about this film was i went out on a limb and actually bought an ESTEBAN guitar through the mai,l even though my head said no it can't be any good if its coming through the mail and what will all my musician and family say about my blind faith well i couldn't resist i got my black ESTABAN with his image on the back of the guitar home and i played it like it was the best guitar in town like i struck gold i convinced myself that it was a great guitar for the money and i hit the jackpot then i proudly showed it to my brother one day he knew his way around the git box and he didn't give any signs of enjoyment that playing a guitar usually brings, then at the end of his spin around the block he stated that i should learn how to play slide guitar and that one of his co workers bought the same guitar and the neck snapped on it, while we laughed together i was was convenience of my new investment and by weeks end like on cue the neck on my beautiful ESTABAN SNAPPED TOO i was not saddened i was not mad i was like pattinson i was zen about it and i went on my way still loving the muse and then years later i took another chance at a mail order bride and that has made all the difference... that's my story and i'm sticking to it, peace out

@@filmisjustmovingpictures thanks for the reply. I asked the question because: i read somewhere that how a film ends is crucial: if it FADES TO BLACK, it successfully concludes the story, a sober closure, traditional ending. if it cuts to black, it means sth jarring and abrupt. additionally, fades to white feels more enigmatic. In this context, why Jim Jarmusch chose to end Paterson with CUT TO BLACK? i dont get it.

Thanks for the comment! In regards to your question about Laura. I wouldn't say never on your question. But I think she is real because I ask the question what's the point if she isn't real. What does that add to the movie? And at the moment I can't find an answer to that. Then again it can be stated that Paterson makes the poems about her as a memory of her life. That's what I love about movies, there are countless interpretations because we all see things differently. I'm all ears if you can figure that out and let me know. It will be really cool to hear another persons view point of the movie.

@SC Mommy - Maybe because she was so focus to find her path to fame that she didn't have any hobby or job. She became obsessed with finding her golden ticket to stardom. Compared with Paterson who saw poetry as a hobby and because of that he had a life outside that hobby. That could be why she was a majority of times inside the house.
