Understanding Psycho Killer

Surrealism has been on my mind a lot lately, and that got me thinking about Talking Heads. They're one of those bands that was always doing something weird just to see if they could, and few songs capture that ethos as well as Psycho Killer. From the driving bassline to the deceptively weird chords to David Byrne's off-kilter vocals, the song keeps you off balance from start to finish, adding more and more bizarre pieces until it finally collapses under its own weight. It's a strange song, but it's also a brilliant one, and its success turned the band into rock legends.

Some additional thoughts/corrections: 1) Wow, David Byrne's voice sounds real weird when you pitch-shift it, huh? 2) To clarify, when I say the guitar in the outro is based around pitch-bending, I mean it more in the music theory sense of playing around in the space between notes, not necessarily the guitar playing technique. I'm not a guitarist so I don't want to speculate too much but it sounds like he's doing a lot of sliding in there? Again, could be wrong, but also I don't really think it matters much what specific physical thing he's doing, the point I was trying to make was that he was spending a lot of time out of tune.

@@Aurora-oe2qp I mean the high A minor chord he keeps playing at the end specifically. You'd have to use pre bends and that's not viable for a whole chord so I suspected a whammy bar. Everything else could just be normal bends though, or maybe a finger slide.

One of my favorite bands and bass players for sure. For more extreme versions of TH’s weirdness, check out the songs Cities (verse progression is D, C#. Both major) and And She Was (two or three key changes before the first chorus).

I find nothing weird about the song, the band, nor the era. I was 17. I had heard of the Talking Heads but I had never heard them (that probably seem weird now but then radio was limited and to hear new things you had to buy the records and 77 wasn’t available in my local record shops) when I went to see them at SDSU’s Back Door. I was 10 feet away from David Byrne when they started playing Psycho Killer. I was mesmerized. The electricity pulsed through my body. I’ve never forgotten that vision of a tense and nervous David Byrne delivering this song. I’ve never had another concert experience like it. I’ve been a fan since.

Yay! Just have to point out as a TH superfan that Byrne's rhythm guitar is the secret weapon of TH and he's probably playing a lot of those chords you attribute to Jerry Harrison (e.g. there are clearly two guitars in the verse). Psycho Killer was written as a trio (their first song, according to Franz) years before JH joined the band. Check out Byrne's solo perf of Psycho Killer that opens STOP MAKING SENSE to see what a tremendous rhythm player he is.

I absolutely love Talking Heads. David Byrne has a really interesting book called How Music Works that I recommend to literally everyone who might be interested. If you’re looking to analyze more weirdness, I would love to hear your thoughts on The Great Curve or Life During Wartime. Although, IMO, both of these rely heavily on the lyrical content, so it might not quite fit this channel. I’m probably biased though because I come from a choral background with very little music theory lol

Oooh, loving the new term I picked up here -- "shuttles". That's something that happens all the time when I end up improving a song -- I'm not good with keys on-the-fly, so when I make a sudden shift to a bridge a lot of the time it ends up just being two chords back and forth because it's easier to make it mesh right with the rest of the song. Apparently I've been shuttling all along!

One thing that wasn't addressed on the "second part of the bridge" in which "the bass does not talk with the rest of the harmony" , has to do with the bass (instrument) itself and the way Tina plays it. The notes of the A major section are played exactly the same way as the G major ones, at the same frets, except for being played one string up - A major: (D string) F# E D (open) A and on the g major chord (G string) B A G (open D). Always frets 4 2 0(D) 0(A) and 4 2 0(D) 0(A). My guess is that Tina opted for this same "geometry" for the bass line, which actually follows a bit David's vocals (at least on the A major part). Then decided to keep the same pattern up one string. I could exemplify a number of basslines which do this procedure (e..g. Yes - Sound Chaser). It then happened that the A guitar chord ends up inverted, but Tina decided it just sounded cool, irrespective (or precisely because of) some added dissonance. This is perhaps something which is not explained by music theory alone (although it can of course be analysed at the light of the theory) but also requires knowledge of the instrument and the instrumentalist.

I've heard many people say they hate the song because of the vocals and the chaos, which tells me that they have no understanding of what TH was trying to communicate. This is what you get when you write a song based entirely on feel rather than music theory. Early Talking Heads were more RISD design students than musicians. Tina Weymouth in particular was not formally schooled in the bass. I would be very curious to know how many iterations this song went through before it was captured in the studio. I'm going to guess a lot. Supposedly Byrne had a version of this before the TH were even formed. While he may have learned a good amount of theory as time went on, he probably didn't have much then. They probably just futzed around until it sounded sufficiently disjointed for the theme. This doesn't take away from its ultimate quality.

This may have been mentioned before (I haven't read all the comments), but Byrne almost definitely played the guitar on "Psycho Killer." He and Weymouth wrote the song, and if you've ever seen STOP MAKING SENSE, you know he could handle the part. According to the engineer, most of the first album was recorded by Byrne, Weymouth, and Frantz as a trio before Harrison even joined the band.

The SMS performance has a much simpler guitar part, but David can definitely hold his own. When I listen to the song, it sounds to me like 2 different guitar performances, so I’ve always though David played the left guitar and Jerry played the right, or vice versa.

@@zachary4670 The engineer mentioned Byrne playing a Gibson and a Strat. For the version on the B side of the single he overdubbed acoustic, too. And Byrne played all the crazy lead bits at the end, too. Even if Harrison did add some guitar, this video gives the impression that Harrison was the guitar player and Byrne was the singer, which is not how that band worked. At this point, at least, Byrne was playing guitar on everything, even if Harrison played on some as well.

The line "The song is a canvas. Splatter some paint on it." immediately brought to mind many Violent Femmes solos.

The description of the chaos and pitch-bending guitar freak-out section reminded me of a couple of other guitar players who have made this kind of thing work occasionally: Neil Young and Tom Verlaine. Actually anybody could play something like it, the trick is to make it seem like there is a point to it.

so in that second part of the bridge, where you found it challenging to find an analysis that fit... is that an example of where more classical music theory simply does not fit rock music and other stuff that has come since?

I've watched a lot of these videos, but I'm finally convinced to comment on one thing: do we need to always make use of relative modulation? Sometimes it feels like the right thing to do, because there's a mood shift or focus on different chords, but can't we also treat VI VII i and IV V I as different resolution patterns in the same key? Once we get behind the idea that resolution has to end on the tonic, it's really the simplest answer because it doesn't require a new tool. About the bass line you asked around for, maybe it's not much from the theory perspective because it doesn't try to explain much, but adding the 6th on bass lines, and scalar bass lines with 6 and 4 are very common in all rock and roll. Again it boils down to what's intentional and what isn't

This is wild. Because of its very stripped back feel, wiry sound, I'd always figured this was a relatively simple song... How wrong I was. There doesn't need to be bohemian rhapsody levels of layers for really interesting and complex musical ideas

MOM: "Here's your alphabet soup son." 10 YEAR OLD 12tone: "Awww mom, I want music note soup." I have been a drummer almost 30 years and I can't even read sheet music. I play by feel of the rhythm and groove and my time signatures are deadly precise. My 'style' of playing has had me in almost every genre of music and I'd describe it as heavy metal / jazz. Think Gar Samuelson meets Neil Peart meets Phil Collins and anything in between. That being said, I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to the actual song structure note by note. But the way you tell it definitely makes crystal clear sense. So if you've made it this far into this comment I want to thank you for your videos and I'm now subscribed and sharing your channel with everyone I can 👍

This gets me wondering- have you ever considered going over any of Neil Cicierega's Mouth albums? (Mouth Sounds, Mouth Moods, Mouth Dreams, etc) They're all remixes of songs and pop culture sound effects, and I'd love to hear your take on some of them!
