Information geared towards the electronics hobbyist on the Schottky diode. Named after the German physicist Walter H. Schottky, this diode family has characteristics that make it useful in some types of circuits.

Excellent. You didn't go into a pile of maths and kept it simple for me, thank you.

ty, I read that the low forward voltage on characteristic is reduced as the current through the Shottky diode increases, as your vid mentions. I made a simple radio circuit and the Shottky is very good at those low voltage AM radio waves...probably better than a Germanium type. I got a bag of IN5817 Shottky diodes 1 amp. from China at very good cheap price.. maybe 50 for 3 bux.. I did a test: Current Voltage across diode 380ma 392mv 130ma 339mv 98ma 328mv 45ma 300mv 10ma 258mv 1.16ma 200mv good for radio It is also possible to forward bias a diode, with a simple battery , diode and resistor circuit, to turn it on to help the radio signal.

pro trick : you can watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching loads of movies lately.

So can we say that rectifier (slow) diodes are acting like simple Low Pass Filters? Is it possible to use them in let's say class A buffer/preamp stage where we are working on biased AC input/output signal (so the whole waveform gets through the diode)? It's interesting what's the -3dB point in frequency response of such a diode, and what is the speed of that curve falling (-20dB/octave probably like in bipolar transistors)?

i was really hoping this would help me test to see if my schottky diode needed replacing or not but all i have is my DMM

Speaking of rectifier diodes, what do you get when you arrange four of them in a bridge configuration and put a capacitor across the output?

You can get a lot of heat

As a hobbyist, I aim my videos at hobbyists. There are very good engineering based videos and documents around if you want to get into the theory along with all the math. Although some graphs and math is necessary, I try to keep it to a minimum in my videos.

I have noticed at 18:55 a small discrepancy when measuring the leakage current with that green LED as an indicator. I do have these LED'S here, and tried them for the sake of this video, but in no way I can get them to light that bright with 2.6µA. It lights, but very very faint. I see it that bright only above 250µA. If I am not wrong maybe you should check your meter ?

Can a 3 ampere diode output 75% of it's rated current capacity at a given forward voltage say 12 volt after dropping it's internal forward voltage ?

What about the ideal diode based on a P Channel Mosfet as far as efficiency compared to the Schottky. I know the price is a huge difference, but?

If I'm not mistaken, I think there are switch mode regulator ICs available with built in active rectification based on what you said.

Why does diode voltage not drop to zero with the supply voltage. I'm confused

I wanna know how to regulate voltage. I'm not sure I'm saying it correctly but I'd like to know how to take 120 volts A/C and bring it down to say 12 volts D/C
@Asyss_Complex3 жыл бұрын
Depending on your needs, one option would be to use a transformer to step down the voltage and then from there build/buy a full bridge rectifier and finally add a couple of capacitors to get a clean DC supply.
