I've been playing guitar for like 16 years. I'm "self taught" and this video made me realize that I really "Haven't taught myself much" 😂 Always avoided the "theory basics" and "studying" part of guitar. I think it's time to start. I'm 35 now and becoming much more interested in actually knowing what I'm playing. Thanks Rick! You're the man.

The whole scale, mode, chord and arpeggio thing can be extremely intimidating. I teach private lessons and figured this out to help my students feel less intimidated. 1.) Every mode, chord and/or arpeggio comes from a scale, regardless of it's tonality etc. 2) Every scale is (essentially) a variation of the C Major scale. All the sharps and flats are applied to the notes of the C Major scale to create the new scale/key (Circle of Fifths). When you think of every scale as a permutation of a C Major scale and realize every chord is a voicing permutation of the same scale, it gives a simple foundation to build on for the whole amazing world of theory, songwriting and improvisation. Hope that all makes sense to you and helps you in your own personal explorations.

Rick's absolute pitch videos were fascinating. This dude makes good content. Stop demonetizing his videos music publishing companies. He's actually helping your content sales!

I've been approaching guitar for a decade by focusing on the classical genre, which is long on technique and reading skills, but short on improvisation and theory. This video and Rick's previous video on the 5 positions of major scales, along with the Beato Book, have provided me with a clear path forward, which is all that a student can ask for from a teacher. Thank you so much.

I wanted to take a moment to thank Rick Beato and all the people who interacted with my comment about modes/scales/chords etc. I truly appreciate that I had the opportunity in the first place and want to say I appreciate that I actually got to contribute something. I'm the same as you, learning and growing and finding out I'm not all the things I want to be as a musician. Thanks to people like Rick Beato, we now have opportunities to share and grow with each other and feel a sense of accomplishment that it's a blessing to give and not always be on the receiving end. Thank you, thank you all!

Ionian and Aolean modes are my favorite modes but these "white board" lessons" are a reminder of just how much I have to learn! I love your connotation and your examples and I thank you for your expertise! When coupled with the Beato book, your videos are the building blocks of happiness and professionalism...and I desire both, thanks Mr. Beato!!!!!!

I finally caved and bought your book, and I’m now able to make it through these videos for more than 3 minutes without asking “What is he talking about, and am I stupid?” Which is a good feeling, so thankyou for making this information available.

The biggest insight I got this year from Rick is that the semitones in the modes are the most emotionally expressive--are the intervals that emotionally characterize the mode. I've also noticed myself (while writing melodies) that the non-chord tones are typically the most emotionally expressive (especially if played on the beat rather than between chord tones and only in passing).

When learning the circle of 5ths I was taught Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle. The acronym also works in the other direction for 4ths.
