So many guitarists are curious and confused about the circle of 5ths. They see this odd diagram with a bunch of notes and symbols, while at the same time hearing so many people describe it as the key to all the answers of music theory.
My goal in this video is to help clarify what the circle of 5ths is, and why I believe it isn't really as important as it is claimed to be. It is simply an interesting way of condensing and displaying many pieces of musical truths.
We will explore topics such as:
- What the circle of 5ths is
- How to build the circle of 5ths
- How you can use the circle of 5ths to find sharps in flats in every key
- How you can use the circle of 5ths for chord progressions

Re approx 38:00: Finding the notes in a major scale is much faster w/ circle 5ths in my opinion, if you use a different method. Find the tonic note for the key. Add 1 note counterclockwise (4th) and 5 notes clockwise (5th, 2nd, 6th, 3rd, 7th). Try re-writing the circle with scale degrees instead of notes, lot of mileage there. Or with the tonic at 12 o’clock if you’re working on a specific key.

Hello. I have been going through all your videos. They are long, and demand my full focus and attention, but rightly so. I really appreciate your depth and breakdown of these topics. I have watched so many other videos from other people and while they were pack full of information, they were missing that ability that you possess to break down the topic into relevant and useful information that is supported by a reason behind the design of the system. If your books are half as insightful as these videos they will still be worth reading. I just ordered the first volume and I am looking forward to it. But I just wanted to say that I never would have ordered your book if I wasn't able to sample your style with these videos that you freely give to us. Specifically, I remember in the opening to one video, you saying that you will continue to make long videos despite people asking for shorter. I like that. I like your conviction and your honesty about the work that it takes to learn these topics. Seeing that in your videos, gave me trust and confidence that I was making a good decision ordering your book. So thank you for putting so much work into these videos and making them available for free. I have been playing guitar for around 20 years. I have strong, nimble, and calloused fingers. But even so, over the years, I have failed to understand my guitar, and I have failed to improve. You have given me the framework and confidence to progress. Thank you.

I’m new to your channel. I learned how to play guitar years ago. After playing basic Chords for years I never really enjoyed my guitar playing. Strumming & basic picking was ok for writing my song however I didn’t have any confidence playing guitar in front is talented guitarists. Now at 72, I’m starting to play my guitar again however this time I want to do it right & build confidence so I feel confident & comfortable regardless of who I am playing in front of. I’m happy I found you because I was going down the Rabbit hole of getting overwhelmed with the circle of 5ths. Now I’m going to check out your other videos before I tackle the Circle of 5ths.

I think the only video this channel is missing is a video explaining how to analyze a piece/ a jazz standard and how to know what options we have for soloing over the chords, how to know what scales would work etc... a lot of us know scales, intervals, chords but we don't know how to analyze and know what to use where... what's the best way to do that? if you could do a long video on that it would be JUST AMAZING !! Thanks for all the effort Guillaume ! Happy New Year !

Thank you for explaining the history of the circle. I just use it as a tool for going through all of the keys. Using the CAGED system I can circle through all of the keys up and down the neck. Right now I'm working on the major pentatonic but the minor is next, then major and minor full scales. Appreciate all of your content and explanation.

Nice vid. I’ll check out more. Theory, ear training, learning other people’s stuff, writing, jamming maybe to a metronome. All of these are part of the big picture. A lot of great players are relatively weak on theory. But it does open some doors especially when lacing what you see others do in a context. Tonnetz is my new favorite toy. It’s basically a Taurus of musical relationships that incorporate the circle of fifths, in one dimension and other circles in other dimensions.

Hi Will. Very helpful as ever - thank you. Stupid question time...at 33mins and 34 mins you say how we can tell which particular notes are sharp or flat. You start with B major and then go straight to F in the circle to find out. Why start with F? Then the same with the example of Db Major. Why start on the Bb to find out which notes are flat? (Hope you have a great Xmas and Happy New Year to you) Bill
@willmetz_music

Because the first sharp is always F! If you refer back to the table you will see that :). Same to you!!
