Video info:
The Growlers is an indie rock band from southern California and was formed back in 2006. They’re known for mixing psychedelic, garage and surf rock sounds into something that comes off as fresh and classic at the same time. The band’s line-up has changed continuously over the years, but vocalist Brooks Nielsen and guitarist Matt Taylor were the ones who started the band in the beginning. So far they’ve released 7 studio albums, gradually evolved their sound and created their own festival. Some fans even go so far as to say they created their own genre of music, beach goth. But i’ll leave it up to you to approve of this genre by the end of the video.
In this video we’ll take a brief look at their discography, musical evolution and one of their more celebrated songs Night Ride. I’m LIE from Lie Likes Music and this is the history, sounds and riffs of the Growlers.

Ive noticed recently as I start listening to them again that their music is like exceptionally bass forward. Especially on the slightly newer releases like City Club and Chinese Fountain. Night ride even is essentially a lead bass track, its just the bass, drums and some keys for ambiance. It almost always is the centerpiece.

I feel like Warren from the Abilgails was a big influence early and I believe that he was in the original incarnation. Also, it can’t be stated enough how important Mike McHugh from the Distillery was to help the band “self-produce”. At the least he was an amazing engineer and had a beautiful understanding of his analog heaven. Mike worked with a lot of legendary bands.

This is quite a controversial band as they've been accused and affirmed of one (or multiple) cases of sexual assault. I chose not to talk about this in the video since i've been a fan of the band since before this happened and wanted to focus on the music. But i guess it's pointless to not make a statement after all. What these guys did makes me sick to my bones. And nothing they'll ever do will make up for what they did to those women. This video is in no way intended to support their horrible acts. It's an isolated look at their music. And i hope it can be treated as such. If you want to know more about their misconducts, you're only a google search away.

Never herd of it, and the whole burger records thing until some people started mentioning it here. Huge growlers fan too, so this is like a metalhead discovering the Manson issues. This misconduct thing is turning into more of an epidemic than the previous one. We, in the states, hear of at least a couple reports weekly of actors, musicians and govt. officials on both sides getting exposed for mistreating women. Glad for the exposure, but sickened for how many people are strictly dedicated to treating a fellow human that way.

as a fan i can say that you forgot a lot of stuff that happened to they all theese years, the fire, members leaving, Scott moving from bass to drums and the inclusion of Anthony on bass gave they a way more solid sound, in my opinion, city club is a great album that shows a lot of work on it, but it dissapointed me like almost all long time fans, i found it really hard to listen to it at first, i loved chinese fountain and hung at heart, so all the changes that came with city club were, at least, hard to accept, and the departure of scott and anthony gave me hard feelings about this new era, in addition, i felt that the new members didn't match at all with the whole band style, thankfully time made me appreciate the new growlers, and the step back to the roots of their music with casual acquaintances made me really happy when i first got to listen to it, they had to go through all of this to become what they are and what they mean to us the fans, and at last you didnt mention the pause they took due to known problems while on tour in Australia.

I used to love this band during their early works. Hung at Heart and Chinese Fountain were masterpieces to me and lifted my mood a lot during hard times. Unfortunately the band lost me after City Club. Had to do with certain members leaving that I really liked and were important in my eyes for the typical Growlers sound. And with City Club I had the feeling the sound has lost his roughness which I really cherished. Nontheless I understand they had to make this step to open for a bigger audience.

Monotony is a slow killer. Likewise, delusion says; I know nothing stays the same. Things always change. But you and I will remain. The truth is... -> you really are alone. And what you truly want -> is to be free. As funny as it sounds it’s all we want. To not have our egos bound with the rays of sun. Because, underneath all of your worry and doubt -> some thing or somebody is trying to get out. -> -> True love wears a veil.... Nobody ever asks brooks where he obtained his wisdom and insight. He’s deep yet his arrow incident shows he’s still a work in progress. And that’s ok. He like their music is ever changing and evolving

Oh wow, one of the more inspiring bands for me until Scott Montoya left and the sound was gone with him. I remember seeing them post City Club and the crowd change was so crazy, from normal psychedelic music lovers to models on coke with rich guys trying to be hipster, always near the bar not even paying attention to the gig. This band broke my heart. But I understand, you gotta make that skrilla

I'm surprise how much was discussed about the growlers personal lives, and possible song meanings, but nothing mentioned about the recent dismissal of Matt Taylor, or the drama the band has found themselves in recently. The end of the video seemed to just focus on only the musicality of their sound. I was hoping to learn more about where the band is at now and what the possibility of them returning in any form. Although, I feel this video was done very well, there wasn't any new information for me personally.

I very much enjoy your channel and have for years now and don't want you to think I'm just critical for the sake of it. Leaving a comments on youtube isn't usually something I even do. I was wondering if you weren't aware or purposely avoiding cancel culture or something alone those lines.

@@shamanlamadingdong7426 Thanks for sharing your perspective. I actually had about 1 or 2 minutes of video time where i talked about this in the video. But i decided to cut it out when i was editing since it didn't really add to the analysis or history of the music. This is a channel about the history, sounds and riffs of various artists and how those things integrate. NOT about drama or general life events. If they end up releasing an album a year from now where they sing about the incident or where they try to make amends, i would possibly decide to cover that in a video.

@@LieLikesMusic Matt's currently not in the band and Brooks is now the only founding member left. I like to know much of a musical contribution Matt has had and if Brooks even has the ability to continue the evolution of the growlers sound on his own. I've been under the assumption that Brooks only contribution of his voice and poetry.

What made their art was possibly driven by studio techniques that may have involved rape, abuse or violence. After the Manson stuff came out, it made me wonder what was going on behind the scenes during the recording sessions. They may needed to do some horrible act to someone to get a vocal take because art. These allegations go deeper than someone saying that they’ve done something.
