Land acknowledgments are so funny to me. Either give it back or don’t. Imagine I stole something from you, and every time I saw you it was the first thing I brought up
@michaelthomas30732 жыл бұрын
That was something Jordan Peterson said one time. The video had over 20 reasons for them, and you've shared one against. But your comparison has flaws. to steal typically means that something was owned. In this context settlers stole the usage of land. For your example, it's better compared to borrowing. It's like a friend saying, "hey, I know I still owe you $20". What's happening in Canadian culture currently is that treaties are very slowly being formed (mostly in BC). It's like we're figuring this out 25 cents at a time, not always for the positive. The other problem with your example is that you're thinking of things one-to-one (ie: one person stole from another), but they're not. It's millions of people who have inherited a situation, who don't have the power to change it, recognizing that the situation exists.

It's conquest, plain and simple. If North America is "stolen land" then so is Turkey, Egypt, Morocco and a large portion of China

Thank you for this video. The grade six children read the acknowledgement every day at our school. They all can pronounce the names now. It is a small thing I know, but we hear every day that we are on traditional land and which groups of people were the stewards of this land. It is my hope and belief that these words enter our ears and travel to our hearts to inform and change incorrect settler propaganda.

It's not their land anymore, those kids did nothing to the first nation's that lived (who don't exist anymore) and neither did you. Don't try to guilt children for something they didn't do, stop perpetuating this ancient war.

Came here to learn but read some comments and see the word stolen again. Not only untrue but in a world where people are so easily influenced, polirized and swayed, it is a very crappy way for young people to look at their situation. It creates victims and anger. Young people need to read and understand all of the advatages indiginois people have available to them and learn to levarge and appreciate. Stolen will only build barriers and no one from this generation had anyhting thing to do with the treaties. Stop saying stolen for the good of all of our children.

I think it's better to give the people of first nations equal opportunities to study at universities like uoft and ubc and better jobs and subsidise their living expenses if we really wanna support and acknowledge them. These land acknowledgement statements in reality doesn't do any good to them. It just looks like a show for some reason. I really stand for the first nations and want them to have the best life that they deserve not any useless land acknowledgement that doesn't remove their persecution and misery. It's like saying I stole your land and I acknowledge it and then proceed on doing whatever we are doing, but in the end what support are we giving them?

The tribes that were destroyed, displaced, or enslaved by the clans who took over that land from them before colonization should also be acknowledged.

Acknowledging land is pointless. It belongs to no one and never has. Especially considering native Americans never claimed to own the land in the first place so saying I acknowledge the land I’m on once belonged to the Cherokee etc is kind of pointless and counter to what indigenous people have believed for thousands of years

Next time you visit France, remember doing a land acknowledgement. The French people are living on land that was stolen by the genocidal maniac Julius Caesar who genocided native Celtic tribes and destroyed their culture. You can also contribute to decolonization efforts by not using the word "July" (since that month is named after a mass murderer). I suggest using the word "quintilis" since July was the 5th month of the Roman calender and that was the name used for that month ("quinque" means 5, just like "septem" means 7, "octo" means 8 etc.).👍
