Would recommend Erik Larson's newest book: the Demon of Unrest. Focused on Fort Sumter in the months leading to the Civil War, the book provides a remarkable study of Lincoln in the months before he became president. Worrying parallels to today.

I’d recommend reading Barack and Joe, it talks about the relationship between the two during their years in the senate, White House, and out of the political stage. It’s very interesting if you want to learn how they came to politics, and how they grew past their differences and became friends

Andre, thanks for the recommendations! As someone going into college this year and still considering my major(s), your channel has been an incredible source of information and enjoyment, to the point where I now think I'm going to double major in English and History, hopefully to become a historian/author. I had already read some great biographies particularly on the Roosevelts and the first Caro book (incredible btw) but wasn't sure what to read next. Thanks for the recommendations again, and thank you for making such incredible videos!

Amazing video man, as always. Off topic, but after watching your videos on Lyndon Johnson I would kill to see a video from you deep-diving into the life, accomplishments and impact of Richard Nixon; beyond Watergate and the surrounding scandals. Your video on Nixon’s thoughts of other presidents is also a great watch.

you should get the Brazilian dollar from the 90s framed just in case lol! President LBJ is underrated because he was blamed for the Vietnam War, civil rights, and succeeding President Kenedy. I am sure living up to Kenedy had a lot of pressure from just that. I'm sure those books look deeper into the person other than just the role itself in a government sense. "Heavy the head that wears the crown" is a quote I think that each autobiography or biographies in a sense tells of each person in that role. With the Quote president Carter had; I think shows a lot of character of what he has to carry himself each day.

I also would recommend going to LBJ's childhood home in Johnson City (not actually named after him) and the LBJ ranch. (However they're fixing the home so it's only a drive tour around the ranch but still cool to see!)

Haven't bought it yet, but I want to read the Theodore Roosevelt trilogy by Edmund Morris. I've read Jon Meacham's books on Andrew Jackson and Thomas Jefferson, Ron Chernow's book on George Washington and John Ferling's book on John Adams, and they were very insightful. Making my way through "Team of Rivals" at the moment.

My favorite book is David McCullough's book on TRUMAN. It came out around 1992 and its interesting how all 3 candidates tried to make themselves seem Trumanesque. Bush had alot of things going on in foreign affairs AND that he's dealing with a "Do Nothing" Congress. Clinton is a guy with humble beginnings and is the Democratic Standard Bearer. Perot has populist appeal and dealing with a long-shot campaign.

Enjoy your videos immensely! Would love to see you do a video on the US territories and whether or not they should be incorporated into the union (ie made states). I used to think not, but with my newfound closeness to Puerto Rican culture thanks to my wife (who's from there) and our daughter, I've started to think it should be. And I've started to believe in the French method and making all inhabited US territories full states. They all conform to Article 4 requirements in the constitution.

Interesting. But all those presidents were not particularly important for the world's future. They were quite human. And that could draw readers to their bio's. But a glimpse into how Haldeman of the Nixon Whitehouse reorganized how the presidential mansion was used for more efficient executive command- and Nixon's use of this extraordinary place shows far more futuristic thinking. Further, RMN's understanding of world leaders, and the movement of foreign national thinking, puts him in a world leader category. He wasn't particularly appreciated in his own country. But he certainly was internationally. And in the long run this is better.

This is an excellent analysis. You have provided a lot of valuable background on the presidents. However, as a political scientist, I suggest there are other books you could examine, such as “Presidential Power and the Modern Presidents: The Politics of Leadership from Roosevelt to Reagan" by Richard E. Neustadt and “The Politics Presidents Make: Leadership from John Adams to Bill Clinton" by Stephen Skowronek. Again, I love your videos. I just think these books would be beneficial as well.

I could probably write a list of thirty recommendations or more, but I'll keep it to three. - The Unexpected President by Scott S. Greenberger: Covering the life of Chester Arthur (someone who rarely shows up on these sorts of lists!), and his incredible story from being a machine hack who no-one expected anything good from, to a leader greatly respected by friends and opponents alike. - Hoover by Kenneth Whyte: Despite being about 600 pages long, I finished this one in two days because it was that good - and somehow Hoover's presidency is the least interesting part of the whole story, which is really saying something given how well it challenges the notion that Hoover was a do-nothing leader who abandoned Americans to the Great Depression. Not to mention, Hoover managed to be a genuine war hero in WWI without doing any fighting. - The Last Campaign by Thurston Clarke: Seeing as you offered a book on RFK, I feel this one belongs on the list too. It explores RFK's 1968 run, from the day he became a candidate to his assassination 82 days later. Hope and tragedy were the two things that marked RFK's campaign, and this book blends the two absolutely perfectly. No exaggeration, I consider this the greatest book I have ever read.

Great vid as always. I've noticed how you seem to focus on post-war presidents for the majority of your videos. Do you have any intentions of making videos about pre-war or even 19th century presidents? Cheers
@AndreDutraTV
@AndreDutraTV Ай бұрын
Thanks, I would love to! While the post war period is certainly my favorite and the one I’m most knowledgeable of there’s also some technical reasons why I tend to focus on it. As a video editor I just have a lot of fun incorporating clips from that era since they have a lot of texture and character that make the video more visually interesting. I made a civil war video last year and I had a hard time making the video as good as I wanted it to be with only photos and paintings. I definitely want to get better at it I just need to develop my style there!
@user-lt4iq5hd5n
@user-lt4iq5hd5n Ай бұрын
@@AndreDutraTV Yeah, that's fair. I'd also wager that post-war stories are more relatable and draw from a cultural zeitgeist we still share with those presidents, as opposed to characters like Taft, Fillmore or Buchannan, who basically come from a whole different world

Hello Andre, I was wondering if you have read the memoirs of President Grant? I have not read them myself but I have read they are actually a very good look into what the Civil War was like especially since they were basically written for money since he was broke at the time.
