Understanding the repetition compulsion

In his early work, Freud focused on catharsis and attempted to my pass the ego and it's defenses by using hypnosis. However, over time, he noticed the return of the repressed and came to the conclusion that the ego must be strengthened in order to tolerate and integrate previously unconscious feelings, impulses and wishes. This is no easy task. Patients often repeat, instead of remembering, especially via enactments in the transference. It is essential to understand this phenomenon in order to use it therapeutically.

Thank you for this video! It is indeed one of the rare and useful content on the internet. However, as someone who has the problem you mentioned, I must say; By looking at the information you have given and most of the resources around me, I realize that you are only talking about my symptoms. I already know my own symptoms. What should I do? Please don't tell me to go to a psychologist, as a matter of fact, I'm a 27-year-old young psychologist, but I still haven't found a solution to my problem. I am so tired and worn out. Please simply tell me: What should I do to stop my repetition compulsion?

Since the driving force of such compulsions is typically unconscious, it will be difficult for you to get to the source without help. What is your resistance to seeking therapy?

Feel your feelings around the source event. They were likely suppressed.

Hey, thank you for your answer. I just saw your respond today. It's been 9 months since I wrote this comment, and in these 9 months I've had psychotherapy and worked on my traumas. In conclusion, well, I am doing just fine :) By the way you asked me what was my resistance to seeking therapy. It was my misbelief that therapy would do no good and was just a waste of time and money. As it turns out, it was not a waste.

I just started a motivation course. Of course, Freud mentioned... so confusing.. "death instinct", say what? Thanks for the heads up.

Thank you for this explanation. Very helpful. I'd like to hear more about "guilt over their own destructive impulses'... Is the idea here that if one refuses to participate in such punitive relationships, one is being disloyal (destructive) to the originators of the relationship (i.e. primary caregivers)..and because the guilt of that can't be tolerated, the pattern of suffering continues? (thanks if you choose to answer this.)

This tends to be an internal conflict, rather than an interpersonal one. When we feel rage and have violent impulses toward people we also love, guilt is evoked. Yet guilt is the most difficult of all emotions for us to bear. We avoid it with rationalizations or simply punish ourselves. The only healthy way to deal with guilt is to acknowledge the harm done and make a repair. Of course, guilt (and the rage that evokes guilt) is often unconscious and must be brought to light through therapeutic intervention. Patients (and therapists) make up reasons for the guilt that are often inaccurate. For example, "I feel guilty that I let down my father by choosing a different career path than he had in mind." This is conscious guilt that often covers the deeper unconscious guilt about the rage toward her father for exerting so much pressure on her. Hope that helps.

Sounds quite similar, to the: "Five Phases of Guilt." The parent(s) etc. guilt trip and blame, or blame- shift... leading to "projective identification" with the abuser(s) 'projected' negative thoughts, and emotional 'dumping?' So then the "interjects" from say a narcissist(s) leading into "repetition compulsion" (due to CPTSD from say "reactive abuse...") and then perhaps 'perfectionism' to OCD, etc.? (That would also 'explain' why going "no contact" and/ or the 'passing' of a parent, etc. would leave the 'survivor(s)' still "caught, in the loop.") I'm reading Peck's: "People of the Lie..." which if written today... would likely be a 'breakthough' in understanding what's truly BEHIND the narc's mask. (i.e. This is MORE than a mere: "dis-order!")

Q.: "In psychoanalysis, projective identification is a defense mechanism in which the individual projects qualities that are unacceptable to the self, onto another person... and that person interjects the projected qualities (onto the targeted individual) and believes him/ herself to be characterized by them, appropriately and justifiably..." UnQ.

Do you recommend reading all of Freud’s work? Or do you have resources for better understanding his work in general?
