I like these little vignettes on different endgame topics. Perfect format for a short YT video.

The knight pawn is hardest to promote when the opposing King zags into the corner. The trick is to focus on getting your king on the rook file on the 6th rank with opposition, forcing the opposing king onto the knight file, then drive your pawn up the board. Practicing the position repeatedly until it becomes motor memory. It's very easy, but not intuitive if you don't know it.

What exactly is the 6th rank rule? I must have missed it...
@SpaceCadet4Jesus

Get your King to the 6th rank on a file closest to the edge of the board, driving the opposing king out from the rook file.

The sixth rank is the only rank that the king does not have to be in front of the pawn to win. That's the rule. Details are in the video. LOL

"I was always told..." that every single thing I get told about playing chess has at least one exception...but typically multiple exceptions. 😭 Except, of course, there's an exception to that too...forced moves! 🥴

In 4:06 white is still winning after kg6

Yes, but Kf7 is still a wasted move. Kg6 is correct. It admits the mistake of Kf7.

2:42 am I missing something? I thought this position was checkmate, not stalemate? If the black king moves to the left the pawn would take it. If it moves diagonally the white king would take it, and if it attacked the pawn the white king would also take it
@ristovirtaharju5030
@ristovirtaharju5030 3 ай бұрын
The black king is not in check and has no legal moves. That is why it is stalemate. If the pawn could capture forward, then it'd be checkmate, but it can't
@SpaceCadet4Jesus
@SpaceCadet4Jesus 3 ай бұрын
Recheck that position. What piece is putting the King into checkmate? It's blacks turn to move and since it cannot move into check, it's got nowhere to go.
@stephennorton8151
@stephennorton8151 3 ай бұрын
If there is no legal move and the king is IN check, checkmate. If there is no legal move and the king IS NOT in check, stalemate. The king in that position has no legal moves, as you observed, but is NOT in check, resulting in a stalemate.

@@SpaceCadet4Jesus I actually appreciated the feedback on the webcam. I need to upgrade it. I'm going to be getting a better one and trying it out. Something with a higher frame rate to at least get rid of the motion blur with my head movement. Hopefully my future videos will be a bit better.
