This video goes over many aspects of how and why aquarium substrate for your frontosas are so important. I cover many aspects on how substrate affects ph, filtration, breeding, water quality, waste buildup and much more. Some things are very simple but have a huge impact on the health of your aquarium by understanding the impact substrate has on your aquarium and your frontosa cichlids.

Lots of great tips and advice. However, you can still have a rocksand or decorative items in your aquarium with none or little build up of debris and detritus. Simply by using wave makers or carefully placing air stones or sponge filters within the decoration .

Nice video. I was wondering when we were going to see a new one. I agree, a sandy substrate works best for Frontosa. I’m currently using an extremely fine crushed coral/ sand substrate. They love moving it around and it’s easy for them to sift through it. Plus the crushed coral is great for keeping optimum ph levels

@@RickyKenerlyCichlids Are you still in the East Tennessee area? I'm in West Knoxville and would love to get the chance to talk with you some time. I'm a longtime fishkeeper, but I'm about to set up my first African cichlid tank since moving here a few years ago. I've just been keeping angels and plants since moving here. I have a 400 gallon that I'm going to be setting up soon. I haven't quite decided what to keep yet. It will either be mbuna or Tanganyikans. I'd love to pick your brain. Thanks

Great vide top info Thanks buddy. 👍😊I have my Substrate 1.5" deep maybe a bit to deep what you think? Once a week I do a 50% water change and a spot clean every other day if needed. It's not hard it's just where waste collects in a dead spot. I clean my sump sponges and change floss once a month. I never clean my canister as it is off the sump and only has bio home ultimate in it. My canister is my return pump. I have to say since doing it this way my nitrates have dropped from 25 ppm to 10 ppm. I got the idea from a saltwater setup that was using a canister as a return pump but they had theirs full of sponges.

1.5 is usually what the recommend at the fish stores. In the end it is about your own preference! Sometimes visual appeal should be the winner!

Hello, I figured this was the easiest way to ask you a question, but I’m interested in breeding my fronts. I have a 6 foot aquarium that’s about 140 gallons. I have 8 frontosas that range from 6-11 inches. All 4+ years. I also have 7 snynodontis at about 4-6”. I had one female hold twice but she swallowed both times. What should I do to get them to breed?
@RickyKenerlyCichlids
@RickyKenerlyCichlids 5 жыл бұрын
Try feeding them frozen shrimp or artificial crab 🦀 meat every once in awhile! Your synodontis might try to get the Frontosas to pick up their eggs!

So you suggest I separate them?

I wouldn’t yet unless you know they are interfering with the spawn.

What should be the depth of the substrate? How much works well?

Use what your happy with. It doesn’t have to be set in stone. You can start with the lesser amount and try it for a few weeks and then add more if you want. It is just harder if you put too much from the start. Most people go by 1.5 inches but you can use what you feel looks and works the best!

i just started 8 member colony but i dont use substrate for ez syphoning . is there any chance of spawning if use a couple of large flat stones on the bottom of the tank . thanks in advance

You can breed fish just fine without substrate! I just like the look and how they move the sand around when breeding. The flat stones won’t hurt anything!

I don't know why but it looks bigger than a 125 in the video. I am in the process of sitting up a 300 gallon for a frontosa colony. Hopefully you have some luck with the 125.
