This is so great -- I watched this when it first came out and it was incredibly helpful. Anyone, even with a modicum of drawing talent, struggles with: "[W]here do I begin?" This gives one a roadmap, not just for trees, but for any detailed object. I've been watching you since the beginning and you taught me about brushes, paint, paper, glazing, and on, and on. It's wonderful to see how much the channel has grown and understandably so!.Thank you so much for your time and clear instruction in teaching watercolor!

I've watched your videos for past couple of years, just saw this one today, that was streamed 4yrs ago. I am thrilled to find it! Trees are always a big issue for me. Think this will help greatly! You are such a talented guy. Thank you for sharing those things that can be taught, they definitely help even the talentless folks. Lol

I’m not sure about papers made by bees 😄, but I have to agree with the rest of this comment. I like how Steve advises us not to stipple. To rephrase another KZfaqr, don’t stipple, rather have the confidence to use the whole body of your brush. I’ve tried this advise once and it does produce more mature results. I think I’ll try Steve’s method of only stopping a few leaves here and there.

Thank You for giving Wet Paint a shout out! I'm a MN girl and try to shop local but artist grade supplies are very limited at the local chain craft stores...usually a small selection of W&N and Daniel Smith if lucky and maybe one highly overpriced 100% cotton paper in the joint. Blick's has a selection but is a chain retailer and shopping there is a chain retailer experience . I am so excited to find out I have a Independently owned ART store that is staffed completely by artist!! I've never met a craft store employee who has any history with even a single art medium beside their school days and the guy who does frames. That's why I appreciate people like you!! A quick scan of the website checked off every box on my wish list. An hour drive both ways is well worth supporting my new store . I'm lucky I watched your worst mistake video a couple weeks ago...something tells me once again I'm going to appreciate your wise advice :).

Values have shapes. This is really good! It's helping me understand how value and color work even after being an artist for over 50 years. And, in art school back in the 1970s we studied negative space. It's not what he's teaching here, exactly. But it really dovetails with values have shapes. Actually it's like teaching the same thing but from a different direction.

When I first began watercolors I did value studies with a whole range of Tombow gray markers before every painting. I have since decided that a value study could be done faster with just two markers identifying lights left white, midtones with #55 and darks in #77. If really needed you can do a second coat of the darker marker. Goes fast & gives you a few minutes to plan your approach.

Thank you so much for this wonderful video! I am seeing trees in a totally different way now. While out walking this morning I was saying to myself "umbrellas" "fingers"....and actually noticing the shading. I love trees but have been am a new painter and have been intimidated by trying to paint them because I felt like i was just being very haphazard. Using the tracing paper is such a great thing! I know understand the process much better and need to practice and practice. I tried a small tree today and using the process here it was much better than previous efforts! Thank you for your presenting such clear techniques in your videos!
