For those of you asking about the chorus, allow me to explain. The origins of choir date as far back as Ancient Greece and the Medieval era. Greek choirs sang their parts during dramas and tragedies, and the most familiar form of choir you might be familiar with is the Gregorian chant, commonly used in the Roman Catholic church. We wanted to create something similar to these, but with our own spin. Asgore and Toriel were the king and queen of the underground. Asgore's title song is "Bergentrückung", which loosely translates to "King in the Mountain" in German. Because of this, we decided it would best fit to go with German lyrics for Toriel's song. The lyrics "Halte dich fest an deiner Entschlossenheit" roughly translate to "Hold fast your Determination". This alludes to the same lyrics used in "Turn Around and Shake My Hand" in the actual musical. However, the lyrics are used ironically in this case, as the human is using their Determination for genocide as opposed to simply leaving the underground. Hopefully, this answers any questions you may have. Happy killing...you sickos.

Oh my god, the way her voice changes! At first she's only surprised and confused, and then sad. But she soon becomes spiteful and mocking, both of the human and of herself, and stays so down to her final breaths. Amazing Job, Loreley.

This is what you want, and this is what you get. That was even more heart-rending than "Ruined." You absolutely sold the utter *pain* in Toriel's voice, Lore.

Never once have I seen a performance as incredible and moving as this. You can hear the pure unbridled disgust and hate in her voice, it's an overwhelming influx of emotion that forces me to give an applause. Amazing.

To go into specifics, I think the thing I find most heartbreaking in the lyrics is how she refers to them as "child of man", and no longer calls them "my child". It goes to show how she believed in the innocence of children and how they can be genuinely good people if raised right. But now she is dying at this child's hands, and she realizes that humanity hasn't changed their opinion of monsters since the war. She might even believe the humans purposefully sent their most powerful youth to get rid of the monsters, or terminate them. Seeing the name of the video, she might have been thinking of a pun in the back of her mind, trying to grasp some sort of happy memory in her final breaths, but it was drowning in all of her other dark memories. This really is remarkable. The broken feeling inside can't be described in words.

Why did everything past 1:35 send chills through me? Toriel’s voice actor actually sounds heart broken and the chorus busted out in German. What the heck

It's clear: Undertale wanted to show us that we have a lot of power, but it also wanted to remind us that with great power comes great responsibility. The best of people have the potential to become the worst of people. DETERMINATION has no moral alignment. It's up to us to choose how we wish to use it.

Toriel is filled with hatred. Damn.

At the start of the song, Toriel purely blames herself for not being able to protect you or not being able to keep you from falling into insanity. But as the song continues, Toriel recognizes what you are more and more, and slowly starts to absolve herself by placing the blame for the bloodshed squarely on where it belongs. On the one who wielded the knife. Nothing else I can say except hauntingly beautiful good job.

I think I just died a little inside. Like Toriel.

I honestly found this song almost as intense as Megalovania. Although it doesn’t have much fighting it has so much emotion that it is almost equal to it. Toriel’s death already makes me sad but hearing it in song just makes it all the more emotional. Just listening to it makes me think of all the monsters who are killed in the ruins. That’s pretty emotional for me, as I think the ruin monsters are pretty cool and memorable. So yeah. Hearing the pain, disgust, and encouragement in Toriel’s voice basically describes her death. She cares about you but knows that your determination will be the death of all monsters. And the chorus is nice but haunting. Because I read the comment that said it means “hold on to your determination” or something like that, it’s like the player encouraging Frisk and even Chara to kill the ones that they cared about. After all we’re in control of the game. All in all this song was great.

I realized something recently. Toriel is the guardian of the ruins. She’s lived there for generations, gotten to know every monster there. She watched as you slaughtered every single one of her friends, and still held out her love for you, only losing it once she sees that you have no mercy even for HER. She even knows that you’re going to destroy the rest of the underground. Her friends, her family, everything that she ever had. She offered you her love, and you took everything that she had from her. Toriel never laid a hand on you. She protected you. You clearly didn’t feel the same.

i love how at first toriel blames herself for your choices but as the song goes on she slowly recognizes that you, the one who wields the knife, is to blame, and that you can hear the disgust, rage, and hatred in her voice as she dies, she sees you as no better than asgore-

Out of all the songs I heard from MOTI, this is one of the most powerful thing he’s ever made, the emotion in Lindsay’s voice is so strong it’s actually insane

Okay. So. I've been mulling over my feelings for this song all day. And I still quite figure out exactly what I want to say even after listening to it so much. But whelp, here goes nothing. The heartache at the beginning is an A+ fake out. I wonder how many people expected some variation on Heartache here instead of Determination. Speaking of, that's one thing I wanna applaud, choosing a song that isn't necessarily expected, and thus just adding more covers to the pool. The pun in the title is just another point in it's favor. The arrangement was beautiful, and the soft piano with it's growing energy coinciding with Toriel's emotions was perfect. The delivery of this song is just breathtaking, Lore. You've always been particularly good at expressing Toriel's emotional state. The lost airy, breathy. gasping voice in the beginning, to when her voice starts hitching, like a lump gets caught in her throat, and then leading into the more energetic choral accompaniment which eventually leads to anger and utter contempt. I especially get stuck on the way you spit out the "with your bold determination." The force and anger there just keeps hitting me. The entire rollarcoaster is especially powerful because of every other componant. The anger is made more powerful by the colder, sharper enunciated beginning parts, the softer trailing off and gasps in the end have a feeling of hollow numbness after the surge of anger. I don't know. The entire thing is just *ow* I especially like (not like like but think it's appropriate and well done? like is a strange term here) that the final gasp is timed with the heart shattering. Shy, you outdid yourself with the art. Toriel looks so shocked and broken. The linework looks *really* clean, and the colors and shading, especially in the profile view is super pretty. Speaking of that one, the return of the monster ghosts was a nice continuity thread, floating softly in the background, appropriately as the chorus comes in.. This isn't art, but the decision to have the chorus in german was really neat. And the entire backing part there feels very heavy. ...and whoever made the decision to include a sepia toned version of the musical's art here, showing what could have, would have been had we left well enough alone... that was mean. Very mean. We did ask for this, and you're gonna keep reminding us of it. Which fits oddly well with the geno run in the first place. I know someone who purposefully did it first, and they were utterly lost without the context of having the emotional connection of the first run. This geno run wouldn't be as painful if we didn't know frisk was happy. ...just...well played. Looking forward to next sunday. Tempted to go back and relisten to the scratches...but it's probably for the best that I don't.

Also that "I damn your determination" actually made me tear up because Toriel basically hates you now YOU betrayed her not frisk not chara YOU did, the player so I hope you find all you were looking for during this

I love how even though you killed her, in her final moments, she still believes in you and is kind to you, hoping that you’ll change your mind.

I love how dark and melancholy these songs are so far...They have a certain haunting beauty to them. Lindsay's performance was great,perfectly capturing Toriel's feelings of betrayal and grief when the human strikes her down. I look forward to hearing the rest of this package,I'm sure it's going to be fantastic.

The Monster's chorus makes me chill each time. It's too strong for me to handle, I'll reset, I pomise... Just to hear it again !

I just translated the German chorus "halte dich fest an deiner entschlossenheit". It literally means "keep firm on your decision". This sort of ties in to what determination stands for in undertale. You have to stay committed to whichever route you want to complete. I.e. if you spare one monster on the genocide route, you will have failed in your mission to wipe out monsterkind.

Ow. I have a lump in my throat that just won't go away. This song physically hurts me. When I heard it in the scratch tracks, I couldn't bear this one. I listened to it once and never again. But Lore's beautiful voice elevates this from just a painful idea to a true masterwork of tragedy. I think this may beat out Heartache and Undertale for your best work, Lore, which isn't something I say lightly because those are two of the emotional high marks of UTM for me. You've always been great at selling Toriel's emotions, but the sheer scope of the highs and lows, the way this builds, this is something else. The opening line is heartbreakingly delivered, ugh. Those little breathy gasps sound so pained. The way it opens with the soft, sad sort of regret, the little sob in "curse this foolish mother's blindness" and "I thought you'd be condemned". The way "you're no better than them" rises is just achingly beautiful. The way Toriel then turns accusatory with "so goodbye, child of man", the way Lore channels her rage that builds into that hard "so don't forget the lives you've ruined". The way "bold determination" is spat out with such sharp contrast to the beauty before it. I love the line "follow blind determination", it has such a different feel to "hold fast your determination". Frisk, by being reduced to this heartless killer, feels more like a machine than the struggling hero we knew in UTM, and I love how the change of the sentence around that single word does so much. The high note Lore hits with "as downward we fall" is beautiful, it makes me think of "Deliver Us" from The Prince of Egypt, just that perfect lone voice pouring out the grief of a people. And then the way the power is slowly stolen from her voice, the way the rage drains away to grief and despair, that last little shot of the sight of her son dying as if that's the last thing she thinks of, that little final gasp of breath... So really I just love the whole song. The scratch track hurt me. This is honestly a beautiful, cathartic piece, and it's amazing. The art breaks my heart, Toriel crying just hurts me so much and the bit of blood on her paws, her crushed expression, the wailing souls behind her as she cries in the second shot. Shyner did a great job. The choice to add the original Toriel and Frisk in flashes is inspired and just the cruelest damn thing because well. That's exactly what a player is likely thinking when they're playing or watching a Genocide run, so to reflect that with imagery is really a great idea but also quite mean. So uh. Yeah. Amazing job. Everyone involved in this piece should be proud, you've really outdone yourselves and that's saying something when compared with UTM.
