I don't think that it is useful to compare Koufax to Gibson rookies. 1955's are way more valuable than 1959's to begin with. Too much time between the two. Also, Koufax was a Dodger, which carries a premium, 1955 Dodgers are especially important to Dodger fans, and Koufax is a Jewish legend on top of it all. Finally, just as the Bench seems undervalued next to Ryan in 1968, one could argue Koufax is actually undervalued next to Clemente in 1955.

I think the 1965 Topps Steve Carlton is undervalued. You can get a PSA 8 for between $900-$1,100. You can get a PSA 7 for around $500. Carlton is one of the best Left handed pitchers of all-time. 300+ wins, 4,000+ strikeouts, 4 CY Young Awards. It worries me that younger generations in this hobby just don’t care about the history of the 4 pro sports and only know the GOATS. I call this the ESPN-ification of sports fans.

Im 14 years old and have been collecting since I was 7. I like vintage cards more and I like their style better too. Trust me, it's not the fact that I'm not interested in it, I just dont casually have 900 dollars sitting around to spend on a good vintage card that's not extremely overpopulated. I still collect them, it's just impossible to get a decent condition older card that I don't have 100s of dollars sitting around for.

Great undervalued cards. Frank Robinson is another undervalued card. I remember Beckett used to list Yankees and Dodgers cards at 1.25 value compared to other teams. For example, I always find a Reds or Phillies vintage card for like $5 or $10. Then I find a Dodger card from the same year for a few dollars more. It's a drag, but you just kinda get used to it. Happy New Year!

While I'm not sure about some of the relative comparisons made, I do 100% agree with your list of undervalued cards - especially the Gibson rookie. It's a scarcer card than I think a lot of people realize. Speaking of which, it's worth mentioning that the Marichal rookie was actually short printed. I would add 2 other cards to the list - 1955 Topps Harmon Killebrew and 1957 Topps Frank Robinson. The Robinson in particular, is criminally underrated.

Great cards Mike! Let me add an honorable mention: The '67 Denehy / Seaver RC. Pound for pound, this card today will sell for less than the '68 Ryan RC in the same grade, until you get below midgrade. The '68 Ryan is a fairly pedestrian, 2nd series card in that set. It's not rare by any stretch of the imagination. The '67 Seaver is a documented SP in the tough 7th series that year - and especially in lower grade - there simply aren't enough of them to go around for people that would like to add one to their collections. Due respect to Nolan Ryan and the Ryan adulation crowd on social media these days - but Tom Seaver was the premier pitcher of his generation. There are only 2 pitchers in MLB history who have more than 300 wins, more than 3,000 strikeouts, and a career ERA less than 3 - Walter Johnson, and Tom Seaver. I think there is a ton of room left to grow in that '67 card. Nice, high grade PSA 8 copies can still be had around the $4k range. Ryan in that grade is going for over $7k. To me that doesn’t make sense.
@RoccoHotCornerCollectiblesNJ
@RoccoHotCornerCollectiblesNJ Жыл бұрын
So true. During the '70s, Seaver was considered a much better pitcher and higher valued cards in the hobby. It wasn't until Ryan reached his late 30s and early '40s that his mystique grew and his card values followed.
@jchcollins
@jchcollins Жыл бұрын
@@RoccoHotCornerCollectiblesNJ I believe a lot of this attitude in the 21st century has to do with people trying to continually divorce pitching from winning ballgames. As advanced stats continue to inform us more on the nuances of the game, the intent is still to win. Maybe we understand the contributions of pitching better, but that does not mean it's suddenly irrelevant. Ryan's personal stats related to K's and no-no's have become more impressive as time goes on, because less people care about his record. At the end of the day, who did more to prevent runs and help their team win on a daily basis? As impressive as Ryan is, and as unique as his records are - his walks will always be a huge stain on his ability to help his team win more games. Amazes me this day in age how many people are totally willing to overlook that. Yeah, he won 320+ games. Heck, he should have won more than 400 games pitching 27 years in the majors had he been truly GOAT level...
@blueodum

Great pitchers like Warren Spahn, Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, Juan Marichal, Robin Roberts and even Bob Gibson are greatly underappreciated in the card market. Among post-war pitchers only Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax are NOT underappreciated - these two because of their mystique.

Interesting video. Definitely agree with the cards you mentioned-plus Frank Robinson, Yogi Berra (3 MVPs and 10 Rings) and lots of vintage football and basketball. But, I don’t think these cards will ever appreciate to the point of being ‘fairly valued’. Great for collectors though. Lots of HOFers - especially from 70s who are decent buys. Agree completely on Brock and Yaz (which I have) and Gibson (which I still need - his rookie relative to others has gone down quite a bit). The disparity between Ryan and Bench has never made sense to me. Bench is the best deal out there. The real deal on McCovey is the ‘60 AS - in today’s world would have the RC logo on that one also. An inexpensive way to get a ‘60s HOF a rookie card. The other comparison is Kaline vs. Banks - the premium for Banks (and I am a Cubs fan) over Kaline is way too high. I believe ‘52 Topps Mathews should be higher than the ‘52 Mantle - Mathews a single printed rookie and Mantle a DP second card. Great cards and video. Love this topic.

I focused my collecting on complete set runs from 1960 to 1991 and then focused mostly on my favorite players which were Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle, Willie McCovey and Roberto Clemente. And I only branch out into handful of other players like Nolan Ryan and Pete Rose. I try to get full runs of all their cards and have upgraded to 7's and 8's of most of their cards. But while doing this for years; I've ignored so many great players as this video shows. And now when I look at what many of these great players in this video cost for PSA 7's or even 8's; they are so affordable and so worthy of any collection. My list of players I ignored over the years who I should grab in 2023 would include Marichal, Frank and Brooks Robinson, Ernie Banks, Killebrew and pitchers like Bob Gibson, Warren Spahn, Whitey Ford, Drysdale and Gaylord Perry and many more. Also Billy Williams, Al Kaline, Yaz, etc, etc,etc,....

Really good picks. Great point about Gibson. I said the same thing in a comment response, but I think one thing that hurts the Bench RC is that it is a bit of a bland card. His hat is on backwards, which makes sense for a catcher, but there is no Reds logo anywhere and people just love his vastly superior '69 card. Couple recent PSA 5 sales for Bench: '68, $240. '69, $225. Really says a lot. Still, it is the RC, and I agree it is among the most underrated in the hobby.

I like cards in all the tiers. We all collect a little bit differently.

McCovey had 7 awesome season the rest of the 15 season were mediocre or avg. I personally don’t think he should be in the HOF just for hitting over 500 HRs

Yastrzemki also should not been in the HOF he had maybe 4 great season out of 23 seasons. I don’t think his hits per season is special a lot of better Red Sox them him for sure

I appreciate your opinion, but completely disagree with you about Yaz.

@@BaseballCollector okay but explain why you disagree. Yes he had over 3k hits but he had 23 season with 12k at bats. He didn’t reach 500 HR and had .280 avg. not HOF worthy. He avg. 20HR a season and was healthy all 23 season.

@@guitarlearningtoplay Ok. 18x All-Star. 7x Gold Glove. 96.5 career WAR. 1967 MVP. He was 1st ballot with 95% of the vote. So just about every writer disagrees with your assessment of Yaz's career.

All cards are way overvalued, singles as much as 90% , vintage not so bad, but still overvalued 50 or 60%. Wax is over priced right out the factory, by 50 to 75%. Peace and Good Luck guys, dont buy anything until prices really come down.
