Been jamming this monster of a record for 24 years, and I'm never bored by it. Partly because no matter how much I learn about making electronic music, I can't fathom how this was created. And partly because it still sounds like some kind of imaginary future that sits just over the horizon that we can never quite seem to catch up to.
@dawidp88053 жыл бұрын
I discovered it some 20 years ago. I still marvel at how they achieved this and it still sounds like something from the future.
@nuffzed20012 жыл бұрын
@@dawidp8805 the issue is music has become compartmentalised with genres, ie ambient music is ambient music, indie rock, indie pop is in its own niche, very little crossing over/ bleeding into other genres from today's acts Underworld started out as a funk/ electro rock band, the ghost of rock music (and its dynamics) exists within intelligent dance, and it works!

This song has so many moments. It is incredible. They synth on kiteless, the return of the dreamy piano and guitar that ties back to Juanita...then the poppy bassline 8:54...follow that as it fades as they bring in the other layers. Drops at 10:33, then returns 10:47 but as hi hats or whatever they are called. still following the same sequence. piano at 11:32 that ties it all together. There might not be a more complex and satisfying electronic song in the history of electronic music.
@zacblake9249 Жыл бұрын
I love how the song actually gears up at 2:15 (drums), and then its like if this were a massive ritual to awaken the spirits, and they suddenly come alive at 3:40, and then it's a deep, deep, deep wormhole that not even the final sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey can equate.

In the 90's living in Nashville. I weekly went to a club called "The Underground on 2nd Ave to receive my weekend dose of trans, rave and techno. There was a club in memphis I went to with a live DJ for the same thing but can't remember the name of It. That's where I came to know the name "Darren Emerson". Owned all the Psychotrance CD's. Only 3 up to then and tons of other CDs. Moved to a small town in Ala called Russellville for work. Absolutely nothing to do there. I was lonely. I went to a CD store to get some music to listen to on my way to visit my friends in Memphis for a weekend. And this is the CD I bought. I remember pulling over just to listen to this first song all over again without any distractions. It totally wowed me. 25+ years later this album still rocks

Interesting question. For me, it's a slightly strange one - it just reminds me of the times in the past when I have listened to *this track*. It doesn't particularly recall anything external, which isn't a criticism - I guess it's just that whenever I did, and do, listen to it, I get so swept up in that it takes over completely. It's certainly the best thing Underworld ever recorded, and a strong contender for the best piece of dance/electronic music of the 1990s. The word masterpiece was invented for J/K/TDoL.
