Montreal Jazz Festival, Montreal, Canada, July 4, 2007. (video 6)
What I guess must be the winner as far as playability and commercial appeal on the Nightmoves album, Undun is tune about resentment, frustrations and the trials of a certain "She" who eventually kinda loses it. Elling has support from Bob Sheppard and Randy Bachman here, and performs an echo effect that almost accurately mirrors the digital effort on the album! Sheer unadulterated masterfulness, people!

She's come undun, she didn't know what's she was headed for And when she found what she was headed for, it was too late She's come undun, she found a mountain that was far too high And she found out she couldn't fly and it was too late Now it's too late, she's gone too far, she's lost the sun She's come undun, she wanted the truth but all she got was lies Came the time to realize that it was too late She's come undun, she didn't know what's she was headed for And when she found what she was headed for, it was too late Now it's too late, she's gone too far, she's lost the sun She's come undun, she's come undun Too many mountains and not enough stairs to climb Too many churches and not enough truth to find Too many people and not enough eyes to see Too many lives to live and not enough time She's come undun, she didn't know what's she was headed for And when she found what she was headed for, it was too late She's come undun, she wanted the truth but all she got was lies Came the time to realize that it was too late Now it's too late, she's gone too far, she's lost the sun She's come undun, she's come undun She's come undun, she wanted the truth but all she got was lies Came the time to realize that it was too late She's come undun, she's come undun

de tragiek in deze tekst. De fluisterende sax, de bouwvakkersstem van Kurt Elling en de melodieuze gitaar van Randy Bachman. Werelds!

You may not like this version and that's fine but this version is after it was turned into JAZZ. Kurt Elling took Randy Bachman's song and changed it so it was swung. It's a really cool piece and I think you would like it if you didn't think of it as an interpretation of the original but as a cool jazz song.

I agree with the fact that each listener will get a different interpretation and I've always thought that with music but I just recently found out that the inspiration for the lyrics in the original song by Randy Bachman was a girl at a party who fell into a coma. Who knew?

Kudos to Randy for penning this tune, but he was out of his element with this gig. It would be cool to see Anthony Wilson, the guy that plays for Diana Krall, do this particular tune with Kurt.

+Will Hartley Yeah... I wondered why Bachman was even on this song... this was more a Burton Cummings Song. He`s not bad... but jazz ain`t his thing.

@@denisenoel3852 and @Will Hartley - It must get pretty boring being a jazz purist - hahaha just kidding. Seriously though, I think Elling was showing respect, having Bachman (the writer of Undun) come out for a solo. Cummings actually said the song was one of Bachman's finest compositions and "one of the best songs ever written by any Canadian songwriter" - so I'm not sure what "this was more a Burton Cummings song" means lol. I don't think anyone expected Bachman to come out and rip it up - he doesn't have those kinds of chops. I thought it was pretty cool to see him do his solo, elementary though it was. You can see his jazz orientation in this Montreal Jazz Fest clip - though he doesn't pretend to be a world-class jazz musician or anything, you can see where the jazz influence in TGW came from (at least this is what I always assumed): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9Gplb2nyrrLXac.html

@@zombiewoof16 Thanks Kevin, I think you sums it up pretty good. Randy's got a wide inspirational span, and it includes jazz. Some of my own favourites from his head is the ones that got a jazz feel to them. He "knows" jazz but is much more a rock guy. He's more at home when playing his jazz songs his way, sometimes he really excells at that.

She's all over the place with chaos and havoc riding herd with a very beautiful creature so why not? Let's all come undun when we hit the wall of lies and a lot of "underground" grinding us down and then some. Lies. Kurt is so stretched in a bebop way I find this tune actually "soothing."

I assume Mr. Elling is some jazz singer from Canada. He reminds me of Bill Murray doing his airport lounge singer act from the old SNL. BAD. And Bachman looked lost. If that was the highlight of the evening these people got screwed. This guy set back jazz a thousand years.

I usually am fond of Kurts singing, like on King Crimsons "Matte Kudasai" (also done wonderfully by K.D. Lang), but here it's too much for me; and as you pointed out Randy seemed not prepared for this heavy rearrangement. Here Randy was out of his comfort zone, and seemed confused by the song he heard in his head and the song played.

gail, you make a good point that going undun doesn't necessarily mean resentment. It does sound though that this particular "she" is dealing with a good bit of frustration and regret and resentment. Don't you get this mssg from the lyrics? All in all, I guess the interpretation of the song will differ for any two listeners. cheers
