Hi John, It's a buckle from a 38 pattern army webbing belt. The other buckle would have a slot for them to attach together. I've spent many a time blancoing my belt and polishing my brasses with brasso. If you didn't get it right, you were put on a charge.

Jamestown was first settled in 1607. Tobacco had been coming from the West Indies before that, but once England had the Virginia colony and then Maryland in 1634 was when tobacco became plentiful and cheap in the U.K. Speaking of tobacco, I think the "thing" with the hinge is a snuff box. Thanks for another great video John. Any silver is a good day. Roman silver is a great day!!!

I miss my mums accent she was from Scotland. So it was so nice to find your site, and once again hear that familiar accent. I enjoy your show the best you seem to know your history. My grandfather was with the ladies from hell, the black watch. He would play his bagpipes when he came to the states for a visit. He would give me a handful of pennies i thought i was rich. I metal detect here in New Mexico but the ground is so hard. So when i see you digging im envious. May the wamth of spring come you way soon. Take care. Ian

Hi John! Tom and Peggy Poeta here in South Carolina USA! What a day! It was such a joy to watch you get so many good finds! You are so much fun to watch! A suggestion: Put all of your metal detecting paraphernalia next to The door keep everything in one spot. That way when you go out the door you won't forget anything. Carry extra batteries not just one lol. shock and horror will be no more. We love you John. Wish we could be there with you.

Hey John! Nice finds! Do believe that IS a finger ring. It's domed on the outside surface, and you can see the seam where it was soldered together. Absolutely a finger ring and not a pipe fitting. The last person to wear that was standing right there, and who knows what they were doing to loose it! That's so awesome, and a bit sad. Copper wedding ring so probably didn't have enough to buy a new one. And we're very upset it was gone. And over 100 years later it's on your pinky haha SCORE

Just a little bit of info. The symbol for our pre decimal penny "D" stands for denarius. The Romans divided a "pounds of silver into 240 pieces called denarius...hence 240D to the pound. I goggled it a while back lol

The buckle is definitely an army belt buckle. You thread the belt through the long slit. Which should be wider than that. It looks like it has been squashed. The part you have is the male part, which fits into the female part... oh misses 😊
