In terms of the flying types, this is why I think Sword/Shield gave us the best bird Pokemon: Rookidee. A pure flying type that later evolves into a badass flying/steel type with Corikmight.

@@Glacial_floofs just ice, but ice's status effects are very dangerous and are used to completely alter a battle if you know how to use em. and some pokemom have massive benefits in the new snow move (no longer hail) like 100% accuracy always or double the speed, and increase evasiveness dramatically etc.

@@joeman123964 damn. that would make a brutal pokémon of mine be even more devastating edit: for the curious. it's an ice/fighting with a unique move and ability. the move is originally fighting that does multiple hits but changes type based on weather. the ability is what makes her a nightmare it's called brutal blizzard. during hailstorm, the ability makes all ice moves super effective (except against ice, water and steel). that basically knocks out 15 types

The line about poison being slapped onto most grass and bug pokemon is so real. Like, I understand that a lot of plants and bugs are toxic, but its become old hat. Especially when you consider that gen 1's two majority typings are poison and normal. Gens 5, 7, and 8 have done great things for the bug typing though. Hopefully we can see a new bug legend//mythical sometime soon

Theyre slapped on because well, most poisons ARE produced by insects or plants. Like what do you expect. I dont think you've seen a lot of bodies that can just be described as toxic sludge and still be different from one another like how it is with toxic insects and plants

@Choco_paz they could do more waste and contaminant based pokemon like muk or garbador. Or poisonous/venomous animals like dart frogs and vipers. Or even just poison pokemon tied to something more unique like toxtricity. Like, a poison/steel pokemon based on the element mercury could be sick. All it takes is a little out of the box thinking and creative usage of what already exists

there hasn't been a single grass/poison OR bug/poison since generation 5 (being amoonguss, one of the best grass type pokemon in competitive pokemon history, and Scolipede). and, counting individual pokemon, there's only 14 total grass/poison types and 12 total bug/poison types. like, out of over 1000 pokemon, 14 pokemon of one type combo is 'old hat'?

@ivyartemis2431 I went about looking at it from the perspective of gen 1. Looking at the big picture, yeah, there's not that many, but I honestly believe that grass/poison or bug/poison is too easy of a typing combo when it comes to design. Really, it isn't so much, I wanna see less grass and bug types without the poison typing (which they've done well and hope they continue to do), but I wanna see them really get creative with the poison typing. Just to put in perspective why people feel like this about grass/poison and bug/poison, the majority of both grass and bug types in gen 1 were those typing respectively on top of even more poison focused pokemon. Poison is either the, or second to the, most common type in Kanto with its only competition being normal.

Bug should resist fairy or be super effective against it. Bug is supposed to be the weak but "Giant Killer" type as its been a counter for two of the most prominent legendary typings in psychic and dark so it works

Everytime Rhydon line is mention in any video and they call it rock/ground drives me crazy. They made it ground/rock for a reason. Show the don some respect lol. Seriously it’s a big pet peeve of mine for some reason.

Pidgeot is Normal bc in Gen 1 most of its moves were Normal, it only had 2 Flying moves back then. Now that two decades have passed, newer Mons get more understandable treatment since the world of Pokemon has been solidly built

Poison and Ice types are so underrated and neglected. If you want to make a Pokemon game hard, solo with those types (and Bug).

Part of the reason Venusaur is so goated in gen 4 UU is its secondary poison typing. STAB Sludge Bomb along with the fighting resistance and bug neutrality (common attacking types in gen 4 UU) set it apart from other grass types like leafeon. Being able to go special or physical due to access to stab sludge bomb also increases its unpredictability and versatility.

Toxtricity is such a nice pokemon with both styling nature type difference and even shiny colors on each nature types... plus its poison plus electric... its certainly one of the best pokemon if not the best looking pokemon in newer gens

Tbf aside from Roselia and it’s line, Grass/Poison hasn’t been done for a few generations. Similarly rock/ground only really exists in Gen 1 and Rhyperior as a typing. Normal/Flying is way more common though at least they’re trying to mix it up a bit the past few gens.

Actually, Rock/Ground is exclusively gen 1 'mons, since the Rhydon family is Ground/Rock, making Rhyperior not part of the type sequence.

I usually forget that pure grass types are not part poison. It broke my brain in silver when my starter (I was 3rd in so got stuck with it) was pure grass.

The whole evolution line is part Poison, even Bulbasaur. And Bulbasaur is one of only two first stage starter Pokémon that have a secondary typing, the other one being Rowlet.

Some types are better as compliments rather than standalone ideas. Take Bug or Dragon, they're usually primary types because they are...bugs and Dragons. Creatures. But then you have the ultimate compliment type Flying. It's not really referring to a creature but rather what it can do. Dragonite is a Dragon, but it can also fly. Victreebel is a plant that has poisonous acids.

I dunno. Bug's combination of Grass, Psychic, and Dark advantages is at least unique, and gives it quite a few 4x advantages that no other type is capable of (I remember way back when the likes of Celebi and Exeggutor were more prominent in competitive, Bug had some usage in absolutely massacre-ing them). Problem is, those types are far from being the most broken (Grass, especially, already has a lot of weaknesses as is, and Psychic has REALLY fallen off since its gen1 heyday), nor does it help that Bug doesn't resist any of them (except Grass, which again, already has several things resisting it anyway). Though on the defensive side of things, I'd say that having both a Ground and a Fighting resistance is anything but bad...... it just sucks that such Pokemon generally tend to also have access to Rock moves, which tear Bugs apart. Funny thing is, if we were to judge types based solely on their relationship to other types, Dragon is actually pretty awful. Consider that, offensively, it's only strong against itself, but otherwise, only does neutral damage to most things (and back in gen1, this was literally pointless because its only move did set damage). It's effectively just a slgihtly better Normal, one that still needs to worry about Steel...... but then gen6 came along, and now it's a Normal that needs to worry about being hard-blocked by Fairy instead of Ghost. In spite of this, the Dragon type still dominates, which really goes to show how the quality of Pokemon and moves alone can elevate a type quite a bit.

Ok but he failed to mention why poison is bad. Like that from gen 2 to 5 poison was only strong against grass one of the type whit the most weakness. Or that’s from the 7 type who have a immunity poison is clearly the odds one. Psychic and dragon where supper strong, ground and fighting have the most type effectiveness, normal only as one weakness and ghost as 2 immunity and there is poison. I don’t know what poison have. The one good thing I can say about poison is that they have 5 residence which is above average

I mean, flying types also are meant to show the control of weather, which is the reason why lugia, for example, or gyarados, have the flying type, and the poison on grass is mostly with parasites or toxic flowers, like the one victribel is based on or the parasite that makes vileploom instead of the normal belossom. (On a side note, gyarados also gains the dark type because it is a cruel and violent dragon, and in asian myths, a dragon loses it's powers when it power trips)

To be fair, Normal/Flying is almost an upgrade to a pure flying type. And Poison is arguably one of the best types in the game... and Ground is pretty good too.

Fairy type is not broken at all you’re just one of those people who doesn’t know about strategy and only use all cool looking dragon type mon, fairy can’t do anything to steel/poison mon (and fire), one match with Iron moth/metagross/heatran, BAM FAIRY DIED IN AN INSTANT

Actually Rhydon does read more like a Ground Type to me. Like wheres the rock? Its just Grey. Its a Rhino with a Stoney Hide. As opposed to the other Kanto Rock Types that are literally all made of stone. Except Aerodactyl but still. Where Ground types in Kanto tend to be fairly normal animal. Digletts a Mole, Sandshrews, well, a shrew, Cubone is kindof abiguous but still a fairly normal animal //minus the bones// and Rhyhorn and Rhydon are Rhinos. With kinda rocky skin.

Being normal flying type is pretty good in game. It gets stab on normal attacks that hit most types neutrally and arguably improve the flying type's defensive profile.

I argue that normal get shafted so much it has nothing it super effective against and it only weak to fighting and both ghost and normal can't effect each other unless the normal type has scrappy but again that a rare ability for certain pokemon Also I do believe bug and ice also get shafted to but like normal gotta do something super effective

Not all types were meant to be monotype. I'm convinced of this. Flying-type is an example. Grass-Type, too, tbh.

Well the reason for certain types almost ever being primary is because well... They just really can't. Pokemon are organisms, living organisms with usually distinct features that resemble real world animals and some types are just animals,plants or behaviors/body shapes like Bug, Grass, Dragon, Fairy, Fighting, Flying and Normal(if its just a normal animal, usually mammals). While other types really just refer to an element they harness, like poison. For a pokemon like dragalge, its a leafy sea dragon (dragon type) that also happens to use poison (poison type). If you wanted to describe the pokemon you wouldnt start with the poison it controls would you? No you'd start with the body shape so being a dragon is obviously the primary characteristic of it. You cant have a pokemon with a main character of it just being the element it wields unless its a starter ir an elemental or a golem cuz logically an elemental type being the main attribut of a pokemon could only work there, like Muk (Arbok is pure poison cuz it doesnt fall under the other "animal" types we have rn)

Maybe it's just me but the only bug flying type Pokemon I ever really cared for was Butterfree and I guess I see what they mean by just slapping on types because even to this day Gyarados and Mantyke/Mantine are the only water flying type Pokemon I can think of and I don't if they just gave Landorus a ground type so that Gligar and Gliscor wouldn't be the only two Ground Flying Type Pokemon and as far as I Emolga is the only Electric Flying Type Pokemon other than Thundrus and Corviknight is the only Steel flying type other than Skarmory

I just realized Giovani used Ground types. Which made me realize he gives you Earth badge 🤯 its been 30 years since i first played pokemon red.

In the first Pokemon game it could be argued that there are two ground gyms, Onix and geodude are both rock ground, while Giovanni's team purposely avoids onix and the geodude evolutionary line.

It's about time, that the pidgey Line get's a regional variant! I love it, but it never performed Well, because of the typing and move pool. It got some love with its mega Evolution. I will never forget how i catched pidgeot in the vertania forrest at around Level 5

I feel like the Rhyhorn line is more of a ground type than a rock type, partially due to it being their primary typing. I think they gave it the rock typing as justification for their high defenses due to their hide. Also, I think a pure ground Rhydon would be FAR better.

It feels like Gen 1 was reluctant to have "regular" grass or rock types and stuck Poison and Ground on respectively (Tangela was the only mono-grass type in Gen 1, and feels like an oddity because of it). Ice and Flying were also only seen in combination back then. Later gens made up for this, though Flying on its own is still incredibly rare.

I generally think of things like geodude as a ground type as rock is more of a type to slap onto ground types who look like rocks

Ice type has been put with Water type so much to the point where I once got in an argument with someone (this was years ago so I don’t really remember) who thought there were no monotype Ice Pokemon 😭

Giovanni should've been what Gary became in gen 2. The final gym test, apply what you've learned, this gym has no single typing. Prove you are ready for victory road.

I like normal/flying types as it grants it a ghost immunity while resisting it's fighting weakness so it's practically a net bonus albeit a small one

Flying type literally takes a backseat with every type besides Normal lol. I don't immediately think of Butterfree as a Flying type, nor do I think of Crobat as one, for example
