You didn't mention that between 91 and 92 Lions lost Eric Andolsec to a tragic accident. That diminished offensive line (including the loss of Mike Utley in 91) was no help after that.

@@90sSportsNostalgia Andolsek’s death was two days before the death of Eagles defensive tackle Jerome Brown. Matter of fact Andolsek’s funeral was on the day Jerome Brown died. But yes the loss of those two young guards helped hasten the demise.

The Lions and #60 Mike Utley brought me here. As a Bears fan I do have a great admiration for the Lions. Through thick and thin, Detroit's fans are appreciative of their team whether good or bad and I appreciate them too.

Great video and I loved those late 90s Lions teams. Herman Moore was super underrated and still is barely mentioned. I always have a soft spot for Detroit and wish they had more success in the playoffs

I am a Lions fan and I grew up in the 90s watching those Lions. I remember those days very well and the Lions what they could of been. I highly suggest reading the book by Lomas Brown if these walls could talk. In that book you will learn a lot about the Lions in the 90s. Great video!!!!

Thank you so much for the comment. I greatly appreciate it and it made my day. I really want the Lions to be good as I like their fans and feel so bad for them. I grew up in Chicago (but wasn't a Bears fan - I liked the Bucs and Rams when they were bad) and I loved watching NFC Central Football in the 90s. I hope to do a video on the NFC Central in the 90s but I am not sure. I believe the NFC Central in the 90s was the most entertaining division ever to watch, (the NFC East in the late 80s and the early 90s was the most interesting). Anyways, thank you so much for the recommendation on the Lomas Brown book. I never heard of it. I am hoping the Lions do well here soon. Take care and be safe.

I remember after the first 2 games of '97 the sports media was asking what was wrong with Barry because at that point he had just 53 yards rushing. Nobody could understand what was going on with him, and then suddenly he reeled off 2000 yards in the last 14 games.

I feel like 90s Bills were the Original Greatest Show on (Outdoor) Turf. They had the explosive, fast offense. MVP Thurman Thomas was an all-purpose back, like Marshall Faulk who took over the torch as best all-purpose back. Barry Sanders wasnt really a receiving back. 90s Colts with Faulk and then James modeled their offense on the 90s Bills with former OC and GM Marchibroda and Bill Polian. Bills ran a 3 WR/2 back set, using the FB often.

As a Bears fan I remember the lions were the ones who brought the run and shoot to existence then the falcons and oilers followed along. Detroit even gave it a nickname - ‘the silver stretch.’

Thanks for the post about the "Silver Stretch." The NFC Central was a fun division to watch in the 90s. The Lions, Vikings and Packers were all really good. Even Wannstedt had some competitive seasons against those teams in the division.

@@90sSportsNostalgia Houston bought the Run-N-Shoot into the NFL and quiet as its kept if Jim Kelly had this way up in Buffalo they would have been the ones to being this pass happy offense into the NFL but Marv Levy objected to this idea due to the lack of a TIGHT END.So they used the modified version called The K GUN.

Barry’s best running stats were from the Bobby Ross Lions. He had some of his best runs per carry ave and far fewer runs for a loss.

Yes, Barry's best season was under Ross but I do understand the argument how a single-back in the backfield was more suited for Barry with his improv style and his ability to run in space. How sad have the Lions been? They had as many playoff appearances in the '90s as in the '60s, '70s, '80s, and this century combined, and STILL somehow finished under .500 for the decade.

I was a young Eagles fan when that massacre at the vet happened, I feel like Mitchell was never mentally the same again. The Lions were probably the better team, but Lomas opened his mouth. This is a great video because those Lions teams had so much talent, they just never truly figured out the QB position. I feel like Andre Ware not panning out just left a cloud over the position.

I agree with you about Mitchell. He could never get back to the form he had in '95. He declined quickly... On another note, that Gang Green Defense was the best defense I ever saw in my lifetime. Lurie says he wants to bring back those classic kelly green uniforms. I hope it happens. I love those uniforms.... Enjoy the upcoming season with the Eagles defending their championship. Cheers thanks for the memories, I hope you guys can end that title drought of your own soon. Maybe we'll have a rematch one day. This video is good, those teams really do get lost in history, but those of us who saw them play remember. By 1995 a lot of Gang Green had left, but that was still a really good defense. William Thomas, Michael Zordich, a rookie Bobby Taylor, Bill Rominowski, William Fuller, they kept us in some games that year because we didn't always light up the scoreboard.

Well why draft Farve when you got Rodney Peete.Makes a lot of sense.lmfao.Worse they turned down Joe Montana claiming they had enough QB talent on the team.A year later they let go of all that QB talent for(laughing)SCOTT MITCHELL.When in reality all they had to do was just pay Erik Kramer for winning them there only postseason game of the Superbowl era.

To this day the '95 Lions still have the 2nd most points for a season in franchise history, and also have the 2nd largest point differential for a season in team history since the merger.

I always laugh when people say Barry never had a team around him when they made the playoffs 6 out of his 10 seasons and made the NFCCG in 1991. 2 of those 10 playoff miss teams were his first two seasons in the league. Like he didn't have a bad team around him. Just never one who could win a Superbowl. Maybe 91 team if they would've had better QBs. And tbh Lions should've won either 93 or 94 vs GB in the playoffs. Those were tough losses.

If you're under 30 you wouldn't. That's why videos like this are so important. My Fins were basically in the same situation back then, just good enough to make the playoffs but never great. They did at least win more than one playoff game, though.

The first NFL game I ever watched was Barry Sanders' first game. From that point on I've been a die hard Lions fan. I truly believe they were a QB away from having a great, potentially multiple championship team in the 90's. It was a shame they put Kramer on the bench after his 1991 season.

It seemed like the Lions had something with Erik Kramer at QB but for some reason, it didn't quite work out and like you said, it was a shame they put Kramer on the bench after the '91 season. Great memories watching games on TV in the Silverdome. But I have never heard of it as being called the "terror" dome. You are the first.

Some fans and press referred to the dome as that back then, but Bennie Blades and the secondary referred to their unit as the “Terror Dome” as well.

Actually Billy Sims deserve the credit after his injury he told coach fonts I see great in Barry draft him and he did just that. Barry could of been along side by Billy if Billy would have never had an career ending injury or Barry could have played with another team.

I didn't know that about Billy, great to know. One thing I heard was that Billy wanted Barry to wear #20 and I think Barry declined at first in respect to Billy (or something like that, I forgot how the story went). I hope so too. I don't really have an allegiance to any NFL team as I just love the game, but there is a part of me that is a Lions fan. I hope somehow we can chat later about the 2019 season but enjoy it. NFL football is the best.

It makes me sick the 1991 Lions didn’t make it to the Super Bowl. Washington was their only problem, otherwise, they would have won it all. They were definitely better than the 91 Buffalo Bills. They were lethal indoors and the Super Bowl that year was indoors.

Not true. It's actually Buddy Parker who won the 52, 53 championships. But yeah Fontes for modern era for sure. I would've liked to see how Caldwell would've stacked up had he coached for more years. He had 3 winning records in 4 years with 2 playoff appearances. And the losing season should've been a winning season cuz 2015 he got robbed of a win vs GB and refs just forgot a rule that woulda put Det at the 1 vs Seattle and they might've been 9-7 that season.

Man i am in a love hate relationship with my team. What i mean is i was born in 1997 so i never got to see 90s lions, but at the same time all i missed is what could have been yanno.. the same boat we are in going into the 2019 season.. and i just realized i have allot of these player cards haha

That's awesome you have a lot of those cards. I don't have an allegiance to any NFL team, as I just like the NFL game ( I liked the Rams and Bucs when they were horrible in the 90s ), but a part of me really wants to see the Lions win a playoff game and do well. The run-and-shoot offense is the most failed NFL offensive scheme of the last 35 years. It is no coincidence the Barry Sanders got better when the team switched to Air Coryell.

I liked Wayne Fontes but he was done in by some terrible decisions. The worst of which was ditching the run-and-shoot and hiring Dan Henning. Henning absolutely trashed the offense and they were never really the same after that.

I like when Detroit is good. It's good for the league. Even though Scott Mitchell isn't the worst free agent qb like NFL network says. He still was never going to get them over the hump. They were a qb short of a Superbowl. Maybe in the the 50/100 years theyl make it happen. And Browns fans think they got it bad. Please

Thanks for the question. I'm also curious about your thoughts on those early 90s Bills teams too. When I think about those Bills teams, the first thing I think about is GM Bill Polian who did a phenomenal job assembling talent. Those Bills teams were just as talented as those Cowboys and 49ers teams during that period but it just didn't go their way in the end. At every level of the offense and the defense, there were talented players. The Buffalo Bills of the early 1990s were some of the best teams in my lifetime.

'90 Bills was their best post-merger team ever. After that the D just wasn't up to snuff and then the offense became less effective. But that season they had a near-perfect blend of both.

Lions fan since birth. 50 painful year's. Lol. 1 playoff win in 60 years. The winningest coach is also the losingest coach. Wayne. That in itself, is fun trivia.😂 That '91 team sure was special & fun to watch. Except (2) brutal beat downs by Wash, best Lions season in 30yrs at that time.

Nah Barry couldn’t catch like marshal Faulk. The 49ers were more prolific and their running back Roger Craig was the original 1000 yard rushing and receiving back. Barry wasn’t much of a receiver. Look up roger craig

Much respect to Craig and it's crazy to think (if I'm not mistaken) he was backup to Mike Rozier at Nebraska. But I really like watching Craig's highlights with that high-stepping. Scott Mitchell’s performance in the 1995 Wild Card was disgraceful, and Wayne fontes did not take the eagles seriously at all and they collectively got hit with a frying pan over the head play after play at points in that game, and Mitchell whined the entire time including after his 4th pick down 48-7 still arguing with the ref 😂. It was a complete joke, and the Eagles team was *very* average (hence why the Lions were favored on the road in a playoff game) , basically being a mashup of early Andy Reid era players, Buddy Ryan/Richie Kotite holdovers, and guys Rhodes and Gruden liked in SF and GB respectively

I recently watched a replay of the game here on youtube. I noticed quite a few things. First of all, Mitchell sucked and a little research shows that he threw far less interceptions at home than on the road, so why (with the greatest running back of all time) did the Lions come out throwing pass after pass after pass until it was too late? They also gave up a stupid "hail Mary" pass for a TD on the last play of the first half. The defense just sat there and didn't even try to stop it from happening. They were lackluster standing around in the end zone with their collective heads up their ass. In the second half, they kept Mitchell in the game until he threw his fourth pick. Why? Even the announcers and commentators said, "If I were the Lions I'd run Barry, and keep running him!"Yet, here the stubborn Detroit coaches just kept throwing the ball. Now that's pure stupidity. I don't understand it. Didn't when I seen it originally and still dumbfounded watching it again over 20 years later. SOL!!!

I thought DET was talented on offense and defense, but yeah, it's crazy to think only 1 playoff win in the decade. That '95 season was fun to watch DET, and that was the one season where Scott Mitchell played really well. If only DET had more stability and better play from the QB position. Thanks for the comment. Well, I grew up in Michigan in the '90s and honestly, no offense, but calling the Lions back then "The Original Greatest Show on Turf" is a joke. They had this guy named Barry Sanders back then; I get it. They also had this guy named Herman Moore; I get that too. But this is the scam the Lions organization has always pulled and I think you just have to watch them consistently for awhile to figure this out: they bring in top-tier SKILL players like the two I just mentioned to give the fans a "show" and create a facade that the team is better than it really is. Then they'll put JUST ENOUGH around players like this to sneak into the playoffs once and awhile and pull a one-and-done (and as an example of this, Barry Sanders actually had a sub-par offensive line most of his career). So bearing all this in mind, again, I get it: Barry Sanders and Herman Moore, for example, made a lot of big plays and were fun to watch. But overall, the '90s Lions were so-so at best and as evidence of this, I would cite the fact that they only won one playoff game the entire decade (in '92, which was their first playoff win since 1957 and they haven't won one since).

Thanks for the comment. I understand the criticism about the Lions being the Original Greatest Show on Turf. But during the 2nd half of the '95 season, the Lions seemed unstoppable (but the playoff loss to the Eagles where Scott Mitchell was horrible, really hurt the Lions potential). Mike Martz as the Rams OC, changed football in '99 with multiple formations, a lot of pre-snap motion and sending 5 players on pass routes prior to 3rd down. But before that, the Lions were awesome on offense and had a great system with Tom Moore. The Lions's skill position players were the best in the league in my humble opinion with H. Moore, B. Sanders, B. Perriman and J. Morton (Vikings fans might dispute this). The problem was the QB position and not every team has an accurate and excellent QB like Kurt Warner....Great comment and I appreciate it. Take care and enjoy the 2019 NFL season.

@@90sSportsNostalgia Actually the 1994-00 Minnesota Vikings had the best offensive skill position talent before the 1999 "Greatest Show on Turf" St. Louis Rams came on the scene. At quarterback they had Hall of Famer Warren Moon, Jeff George, & Daunte Culpepper, at running back they had Terry Allen, Robert Smith, & Leroy Hoard, & at wide receiver they had Hall of Famers Cris Carter/Randy Moss, Jake Reed, & Quadry Ismail.

Sad thing is, the 90s Lions could have been great. They had talent. Never had a consistent quarterback. A couple of pieces and they could have put a solid run at the NFC.

I am probably higher than most in regards to Sander's teammates (Barry was unbelievable and I'm not trying to diminish that), but LT Lomas Brown and WR Herman Moore were really good back then. Herman Moore was one of the top WRs in the mid-90s as he was so hard to cover.... Thank you so much for your viewership and your comment. I greatly appreciate it.

Barry Sanders was a great stat stuffer and very showy back, but his value to a team is greatly exaggerated. He gained most of his yards in a game on about 2 carries, on his other 18-20 carries he routinely put his team in poor down and distance situations with runs for no gains or loss. He was not a good drive sustaining back, and he didn't help out in the passing game. A back like Payton or Emmitt Smith is much more valuable to a team. Guys that can consistently get positive yards and help keep the chains moving to help the overall team. Barry just helped himself to stats at the expense of the team with his erratically inconsistent running style that didn't help move the chains.

Thanks for the comment. I understand your points about Barry. One reason why he is not regarded as one of the greatest backs is because of the several negative yardage plays. But as a fan, his feet were amazing to watch. The closest I have seen to #20 was LeSean McCoy during his Philly days. Furthermore, I remember when some criticized Wayne Fontes for taking Sanders out on goal to go situations but it was the right move. Enjoy the Super Bowl and thanks for the comment.

DICK TRICKLE you’re delusional. You do realize Barry had a horrible offensive line for most of his career. You put a running back like him on Dallas and he would of been just as good as Emmitt Smith . He was a better “pure” running back than Smith ever was. That’s just a fact.

Poor Barry Sanders! My guess is that Mr. Sanders was too mindful about Walter Payton and how he died. He had a great admiration for the NFL's greatest rusher and rightfully so. Was Walter's widow Connie upset about Mr. Sanders' announcement to quit football? I'll bet she was. Walter himself would be very upset at hearing the news of Mr. Sanders quitting. But another factor besides how Walter died was instrumental in the retirement of Mr. Sanders - the Lions organization and how he thought were inept screwballs who did not give a shit about football.

Thanks for the comment. I just want to add in this interesting aspect of the record: Emmitt Smith broke Walter Payton's record against the Seahawks. If #22 did not do this vs the Seahwaks, the following game was against the Lions in Detroit. My guess was that Lions fans would be somewhat hostile because they know that record should have been Barry's.... Congrats to the Bears and enjoy the playoffs.

Im sick of this didnt have a QB bullshit.The Lions had 2 good QBs in the 90s.Erik Kramer and Dave Krieg.Kramer won 2of 5f his playoff gamesOther than Bobby Layne ,Tobin Rote and Earl dutch Clark,name me another Lions QB who won a postseason game?answer is NOBODY(INCLUDING Stafford) .Dave Krieg was WAY better than Mitchell and almost beat Green bay twice at lambeau.(thanks for not showing up Barry)
