Thank you mr Jim for your wonderful cultural literary channel. I gathered main theme of book you mentioned and author biography briefly here it’s mirror and lamp main theme argues that pre romantic literature and art sought to , as Shakespeare said ( hold as there mirror up to nature , contrast romantics inventief concept of mind as lamp or radiant projector which makes contribution to objects perceives . M , h , Abrams Meyer Howard ( 1912 - 2015 ) he was American literary critic, known for works on romanticism in particular his book mirror and lamp . I saw in the comments you attended U.T. Austin is unrecognizable now. It's an international city. I lived there in the late 80's until the early 2000's. A great city. I still my copy of The Mirror and the Lamp which I bought in Austin in the late 80's. Remember the coffee shop Quackenbush's on the drag? I doubt if it's still there. There was also a great collectors bookstore on the drag, that had first editions and antiquarian boos. The name of it I can't remember. I knew all the good used bookstores at the time. When I visited a few years ago all of them were gone. In fact not many bookstores remained. Hard to believe given how literary Austin is, was...

I was in Austin from 86 thru 87. Maybe we crossed paths! It was still weird and cool then but starting to change. Haven’t been back since. I remember Quackenbush’s and vaguely the rare books place. I remember buying some stuff at Half Price Books. It feels like a lifetime ago.

@@greatbooksbigideas Likely did, since I frequented the drag often for the bookstores, Sound Exchange, the record shop where I bought my first Joy Division album, and Dolbie Theater and the other one whose name I can't remember. The University Co-op with its extensive book collection. In the 90's Barnes & Noble moved next to Barnes and Noble and the co-op decided to sell off all its books except for textbooks. Barnes and other franchises began to buy up property making it impossible for the used bookstores on the same street to survive. I too spend a lot of time at the Half price bookstores, especially the one near the university. When they got into the rare and collectors market, being able to pay much more than the used bookstores, the end was near for them. The internet sealed their demise. Did you see the film Slacker by Linklater? I think it came out in 89. That's the Austin you and I knew. Now it's unrecognizable.

Yes, a few years after I came back to Pennsylvania, I saw Slacker. That's exactly how it was!

UMass, Amherst was on my shortlist of grad schools, but I if I recall correctly, I didn't apply. Do you teach German and/or CompLit currently?

@@greatbooksbigideas I've only ever taught in German or Modern Languages Departments. A lot of downsizing has happened to German as you might imagine. I'm lucky to have found the nice non-tenure track job I have. I teach German language courses and a rather popular course on European fairytales.
