It feels so strange to see you move out, when I watched you move in almost a year ago. I’ve loved being able to watch snapshots of your first year, and as I start uni in September it’s eased my nerves a little bit. I’m proud of you! Enjoy sitc!

So at Durham we are divided up into colleges. When you arrive you get ‘college parents’ in the year above you (who take your subject) who basically act as mini mentors. They’re like people you can go to for advice, but also a friend in the year above you. Then, in your first year you get ‘college married’ to someone and then adopt ‘college children’ (freshers) of your own in your second year! It’s a really weird tradition but so much fun - we all take it very seriously and ‘propose’ to each other etc! Hope that makes sense?

Hey, Jack! I’m thinking of not going to university this year, and change my degree to English. I really enjoy English, but I’m a little on the fence about it. Do you have any advice, or recommendations? I’m also really indecisive about what type of English to do.

I’d say just make sure you’re 100% certain before you pick a degree - they can be really intense and the only person who controls how you do is you. There’s a lot of reading involved in an English degree but it’s so so rewarding and I absolutely love it. It opens your eyes to so much incredible literature!

I’d probably recommend it, yes! There are quite a lot of formal occasions so you’ll definitely get a lot of use out of it! I’d recommend just getting an all black suit with a few different ties and a bow tie! ☺️
