When I was in high school, the Eastgate Mall was just a sign on a fence along route 32 that read: "Future site of the Eastgate Mall". These days, I have seen Union Terminal every time I ride Amtrak, albeit after midnight when the building is otherwise empty.

Another great video! I grew up in Oxford where there aren't any malls and it was a treat anytime my parents would drive us to The Mall which was usually Northgate but if I was really lucky and my mom would drive a little further, we got to go to Tri County which had all the iconic 90s stores that everyone loved. I moved away in 2010 and am still in shock when I visit home and see the sad state of these malls nowadays. I love how you capture the glory in these places with such attention to detail in the design and explaining their history. The mall music and audio of old commercials is an awesome touch. Your production just keeps getting better! It's great watching a dead mall video created by a filmmaker who knows the locations well and appreciates them so much. I just love your channel!! Thanks for your hard work bringing us these awesome videos!

Thank you Erika! I have a lot of memories of going to the malls around town in their 80s and 90s heyday..,back when we thought they’d be around and film was expensive, so we didn’t think to take photos, and it’s something I am really interested in preserving because I worry malls will be gone by the time my own future kids are teenagers, or at least unrecognizable from their past.

Union Terminal truly is an amazing work of architecture! Thank heavens it was saved ... if it was demolished it would have been a tragedy like the demolition of the original Pennsylvania Station in New York City. It has a aura of classic grandeur mixed with an Art Deco machine age vibe! BTW Kristin ... I love your animated maps ... it that Ron's brainchild???!!!

We worked on the maps together (my next challenge is to really learn After Effects)! Wait until you see the interior, it is incredible. There are mosaic murals in the Rotunda, and when they tore down the original terminal back in 1975, they saved the murals there and they were split between the Cincinnati Convention Center and our airport.

@@UniCommProductions The chief architectural design consultant for Union Terminal was Paul Philippe Cret, born in France and graduated the Ecole des Beaux Arts ... but moved to Philadelphia and eventually became a professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania (where Officer Mark patrolled). Cret's 1861 Victorian home is a mere 3 blocks away from my own home here in West Philly. Most of Cret's works are here in Philly but there are fine examples of his work in Washington, DC and in Austin, TX as well.

Can't wait to see Ep 3 with Forest Fair Mall. It had an interesting history with the night clubs, the reno in 2004-ish that did well for like a month, and that thing in the middle of the food court, I don't even know what you call it. It had balls and chimes and things, and you would just watch it. Man I hope that wasn't destroyed, hopefully donated/bought and sitting somewhere still in use.

On the other side is a hair salon and prudential insurance. But the inside used to look like a little street just like Surrey Square. And there was a woman who had a shop and she sewed or altered wedding dresses, bridal party dresses, prom dresses, etc. That shop closed when she passed away.

What differentiates between a small mall and a shopping arcade? The Camayo Arcade reminds me of many of these tiny malls you’ve shown us.
@UniCommProductions

Mostly the difference is the era in which it was built and where. Shopping arcades tend to be in urban environments, typically don’t have anchors (department stores), and usually pre-date the 50’s suburban shopping mall.

There are a couple of malls where I grew up at that you might be interested in checking out. One is called the Northgate Mall in Decatur, Illinois. It had a Turnstyle inside of it that went out of business and then a Ventures moved into that location, Then in the late 90's when Ventures went out of business a store that was located down town in Decatur, moved because ADM the big factory bought out the space down town that the city of Decatur sold to the factory to build a new building and also the Global Training Center. K's Merchandise moved into the anchor store. There was in the Northgate mall at one time a Team Electronics store which moved out and later replaced by Hollywood Video store, there was a Jewel Osco's on the other end of the mall, a three screen General Cinemas which was bought out in the mid 90's by the GKC Movie Theaters moved into the location and was there until the late 90's. There were other things inside the place. Then down the street on 51 North there is the Hickory Point Mall in Forsyth, Illinois. I learned from my parents a couple of weeks ago that pretty much it will become a office building due to stores closing right and left in the mall.

This is a great video, however.... Middletown is 513, should it be included? If so... Middletown had two malls build in the 70's. The City Center Mall in 74, and the Towne Mall in 77. I find the City Center Mall to be the most interesting... It was built over existing historic storefronts and literally encased two blocks of Middletown's Central Ave. The structure has since been removed, and the historic Store fronts revealed.
@UniCommProductions
@UniCommProductions 4 жыл бұрын
I really debated whether to include Middletown's two malls from the 70s or not. They're further from the metro than Florence is and I wasn't sure whether people who live there considered themselves part of Cincinnati, part of Dayton, or their own thing. Ultimately, they were cut because of the distance from the city (however I'd love to go do an updated video on Towne because it was only the third video we ever did and it's a little rough around the edges.) City Center Mall is a really interesting story, when you combine the fact that Middletown isnt a very big place and they built two malls in pretty quick succession from each other...I'd love to find some photos of it.

There are a lot of ideas out there: the most popular/successful is converting them to office space, however there are examples nationwide of them being converted to community colleges, churches, and even in some rare cases, housing. Part of the problem with the really old ones is because of asbestos it’s often cheaper to fully demolish them than to recondition the existing structure, and a lot of malls in the 80s and 90s were built pretty cheaply and can’t handle the conversion process. It really depends on what an area needs and what the existing structure can handle.
