Explains the motion of charged particles as they move parallel to an electric field. It shows you how to derive the equations for the work done on the charged particle as well as for the velocity and acceleration of the charged particle as it moves along the electric field. Also included is one easy to follow worked example.
When two metallic plates are set a distance apart and then are attached to a potential difference, a battery for example, one plate will have a positive charge and the other plate will have a negative charge. The electric field will be directed away from the positive plate and toward the negative plate. The electric field between the plates is uniform throughout. That means the electric field strength is the same everywhere inside the parallel plates. Only at the ends of the plates will it show a non-uniform field. Such a system can be referred to as a parallel-plate capacitor.
Work must be done to move charges from one plate to another. The work can be done on the charged particle either by an external force or by the electric field. The work done on the particle will be equal to the potential energy given to the particle. Using the law of conservation of energy (initial potential energy = final kinetic energy) the velocity of the charged particles can be determined. The acceleration of the charged particle in the electric field can be calculated using newton's second law. Because there is a uniform electric field between the plates, the charged particle will experience uniform acceleration.

Brilliant work there. Your consistent breakdown of how equations are derived is next level compared to almost everyone else I have been looking at.

Hello. Thanks for the explanation. I have one question. Why do we consider the distance between plates when the particle moves perpendicular to the field, but we don't when it moves parallel to the field?

Very attractive and breef, my question is the charged body has also gravitational acceleration which mess up everything here. Is it neglected because it is small or to make the calculations easy?
@stepbystepscience
@stepbystepscience 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is neglected to simplify the problem and also it is relatively small when compared to the acceleration from the electric field.

Does this only apply when plates are placed horizontally?
@stepbystepscience
@stepbystepscience Жыл бұрын
for these problems we generally ignore the effect of gravity, therefore the orientation of the plates would not matter.

Those parameters of speed and acceleration and time it takes the electron to travel are totally beyond the human physical practices, imagine the human moving at those velocities - it will convert human into energy LOL

why didnt you add a negative sign for the charge of the electron?
@stepbystepscience
@stepbystepscience 6 ай бұрын
When calculating the magnitude of the force we leave the signs off of the values because the magnitude is a scalar value. We take the sign into consideration when we want to know the direction of the force/accleration/velocity etc.

shouldn't U = qEd and V = Ed?
@stepbystepscience
@stepbystepscience 2 жыл бұрын
U = qEd is the change in potential energy or the work done and V = Ed is the potential difference between parallel plates.

work is not q delta U, it is just the change in potential energy.
