A Mercedes Unimog, and a few friends tackle the extreme class 4 off road trails in Vermont. A rocky uphill stream bed tests the articulation, & clearance of the mighty Unimog 416 Doka.
This weekend of trail running took place at the Vermont Overland.
ABOUT THE EVENT:
VERMONT OVERLAND BIRDWATCHING SAFARI is the epitome of the exploration aspect of Vermont Overland. Participants in VOBS use their well-appointed vehicles to venture out into the Vermont backcountry to view their favorite indigenous bird species. Along the way, they'll make stops at local pottery shops, country stores, nano-breweries and historic sites. Many love to find remote cemeteries and imagine how Vermont looked when horse and buggy meandered the ancient roads. Some just come to take in the amazing fall foliage and enjoy the localvore food trucks back at camp. Whatever the reason, VOBS has become a cult overlanding bucket list gathering and we like that just fine.
GET OUT THERE! This is what sets VOBS apart from other overlanding events: you can actually get out and do some real off-road overlanding exploration. We’ll teach you how to navigate Vermont’s prolific unmaintained ancient road networks on your own to find the best bird watching areas. You’ll be able to test your skills and equipment over a wide variety of overlanding terrain. When you get back to the venue in the afternoon, grab a beverage and come over to the vendor area and just hang out, meet all sorts of fun-loving, interesting, like-minded people and thoroughly enjoy yourself.

Nice off road vid boys. I first drove a mog , prob same model, ut it had a canvas roof. When i was 5 or 6 years old. Working in the woods, then i passed my test as stupid enough, n moved up onto a equal wheel county with double drum winch, dragging feld trees down to the landing site. I was not heavy enough to hold one side brake pedal down to asssist turn, so i used to jump up n down on it. Had to eat more fresh farm food n rib sticker to gain a few kilo. 20 odd years later graduated onto a mog with silly size winch on front, think 25 ton, with tipper body on back. The only time i stopped it in its tracks, was with 4 or 5 tons of gravel on the back, i backed it u a steep banking the all go grass cutters could only cut up and down, no traversing. Backed it up, when i came back to bottom, the massive winch on the front dug in, i was not throttling, so i backed up a bit, up a stick, bit of juice n made a duck pond, winch shaped. The lawn keepers werent to impressed. It was one of those vehicles with a few tons on back, it was a question of name somewhere it would go. Used to bit of off roadin too, get some axel travel straps fitted or carry spanners to take front half of back prop off, to join up again when it pops out at max cross angle. Nice vid, reminds me, that men dont grow up, they just go off road.

Great looking unimog and great dirver! I've seen some of the DOKA's go for crazy money, great to see one being used right! I had a 416 with the longer wheelbase and more powerfull engine (compared to regular 406), but i sold it recently because i was unable to get plates for it. Im now looking for a U1700 or maybe spend a little more for something lika a U2450.

A much too commom technique shown here, is to approach an obstacle with enough speed and momentun to scale it, and upon first contact either reduce the throttle to idle, push in the clutch, or hit the brake ( often all three simultaneously ). This very effectively negates the advantageous speed / momentum once had. All further attempts are made merely to scale the object and then regain the lost speed / momentum ...

I suspect the landys are all auto boxes - so particularly difficult to maintain speed either increase or decrease. Clearly the Unimog's always driving and just crawls up stuff. I've seen other cases and as they lose speed, they rev the engine - the sudden power just spins the wheels.

@@drivetheglobe If the springs are making noise then they are not tight. More than likely the noise is caused by frame flex and the roof rack mounts. My guess is there are cracks in it or broken bolts. Also how much cab lift is on that thing? I raised mine an inch and I thought it was too much!
@drivetheglobe
@drivetheglobe 4 жыл бұрын
@@vonsmog1 you are probably right, gonna have to take a look at the rack mounts. I have broken them in the past due to the frame flex off road. I will have to look but I believe the cab lift is about an inch and a half to clear the turbo. Gonna be taking the mog on a big trip coming up so I will be going through the whole thing. Also have an issue right now with no front locker engagement- which I picked up from this video.

@@drivetheglobe Front locker not working could be a bunch of things, broken air line, bad locker seals, or if not used much the locker piston can stick due to rust. Check for air leak while the truck is not running, but with a full air tank. If no leak from the line, see if you can hear a leak in the axle it self. Sometimes if the leak is bad enough it can blow the dipstick out of the transmission, or pop the portal box seals. Feel free to call me if you have questions. Contact info on vonsmog.com

@@vonsmog1 When the temp goes up slightly I will go check those few things. I am pretty sure it is not air, I dont believe the line is leaking. Could be rusted piston. Was a little concerned with some of the time I have spent in deep water. They get a fair amount of use so not sure. Thanks for the input and I may contact you as I try to get it sorted out. Looks like I have some minor portal leaks too. Trying to tackle the lack of wipers or washer squirter. Getting to the motor is a bear! Hoping it might just be the wire feed.
