As much as I love him as a player I can only say: "Those students are very lucky to get taught by Vengerov.... when they are on show". I know from two close friends that have studied under him at the Menuhin academy that in private lessons (basically when the cameras aren't on him) that he's a very cold, mean-spirited, arrogant, rude person that's only helpful when he needs to be. I find that both hard to believe and believable. We all know the type that gives a lot to charity, puts on a good show, appears smile and cheery.... but then has a dark side. It was his dark side that made my friends quit and move to different academies in other countries! I'm HOPING that my friends just got Vengerov on all of his bad days and hope that he really is a good person who means well. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt since I can't hear his side of the story.

She's doing great. I didn't hear any wrong note. And that cadenza is so, so difficult to play. It was the only section not very good. But... there we have Maxim Vengerov to guide her. How lucky she is to receive his advices.

10:30 to 10:33 is definitely a section she would want to play again haha (in terms of wrong notes). She makes them sound better than most players though, that's for sure! In the heat of the moment she can sort of get away with it seeing as that's the cadenza which is all about emotion and expression - if she's being 100% passionate but the technique lapses a little then that is still how a cadenza should be. It's as honest as you can get and shows a brilliant human playing, not a robot.

These masterclasses are usually not about wrong notes. If somebody is still playing wrong notes, she/he should not really be here. These classes are usually about musicality, how to make your music more interesting musically.

The one thing that strikes me about most masterclasses is the mere fact that the participants are still students! The level of playing and musicianship is enormous amongst today's youth which makes me very optimistic for the future of classical music. Brava, Ms. Bevilacqua!

@JXS63J
@JXS63J 3 жыл бұрын
And now for after: Maxim was a perfect gentleman. He cared solely for the music, and fully respected this student. One thing that might have been interesting would have been for Maxim to let Clarissa play on his violin, which was - to my ear - way superior to Clarissa's. This session was the very height of what a musical collaboration can bring about: a somewhat minor improvement in the student's understanding, but at the same time the difference between a good and really great interpretation.

@@JXS63J I've wondered about that too, but at this stage in her career Ms. Bevilacqua will have the use of a fine violin, possibly even a priceless Italian antique such as a Strad. Note that that Mr. Vengerov is wearing a headset, obviously so that his speech can be heard clearly on the recording without exerting himself. But if his violin is receiving additional amplification, even if only a little, then that's not a fair comparison with the student who is being miked from farther away.

The worst thing you can say about a violinist is "plays like a violinist" you have to express the music and the implied instruments including the human voice which has different structures than a string instrument. Vengerov gets right to the heart of the matter as ever. It is hard, meanwhile. Violinists spend so much time studying fine, very fine intonation it is so easy to continue moving from note to note instead of following the line ... listen to Caruso sing, it is all line. She is so good - too good, perhaps. I know I have arrived only when I achieve a state of wonder beyond technical control, the sheer joy of the music and its magical sound world! Pause a moment child and simply draw the bow across the string, relaxing the while ... until your heart leaps with the sound!

He has a good point on the symphonic character of the Concerto. Besides that, he didn’t manage to bring her to the next level. He is so focused on some details and didn’t let her try it. Always interrupting her and talking about how she is diminishing the quality of the piece. Then is he pointing out some of her „flaws“ and a few minutes later singing it the same way and wanting from her to play it that after a few minutes of rambling about nothing

He could have explained this with just two words: make it Flow and make it Sing. Your bow arm and your fingers will always do what you ask them to do but you must know what you want before you "talk" to your fingers and bow arm. At this level, it just requires a little thinking, not so much practice. Her phrasing will change over time anyway.

His constant and maybe sometimes annoying criticism comes from another point .. it’s just the strong missing passion inside of her .. the emotional pain that can be Transferred through this musical master piece .. especially the violin can create strong emotions inside the listeners heart. Vengerov is an extremely passionate player and she isn’t at all. He is trying to wake it up in her or at least compensate the missing passion .. maybe is a question of her age but maybe it’s also more a question of her personality and her general expression of emotions ..

If you have to interrupt the student every ten seconds then one of two things are wrong. Either the student is totally incompetent (which is not true in this case) or you are trying to impose your own selfish vision of the piece in question and get frustrated when the student doesn't immediately become a carbon copy of your own interpretation. I have noticed that recently Vengerov has become a little more flexible in this regard but in the past he has been very PRESCRIPTIVE and acting like his way is the only way.
