There are benefits to going union, but you don't want to get in too soon. Healthcare, better pay, and bigger projects are what you're angling towards, but if you join before you're ready, you might end up in an awkward situation where you can't get work. Unless you are in a "right to work" state, union professionals can only work union shoots. You will want to be sure you have the right connections and experience to get consistent work.
In this video you'll hear from two people in the A-list Work Study program who are getting work on some non-union sets and how they're expanding their network into what will ultimately becoming a lasting career. They're on their way to being in demand all the time, making great money, and working on incredible shoots with great people.
There is a ton of non-union work and, for industry newcomers, this news couldn't be better. These are the sets where you get your hands on equipment, start building mentors, and make the kinds of mistakes you don't want to make on union sets where the community is smaller and the cost of each mistake is literally higher.
Remember, everyone makes mistakes and I like to always remind you that mistakes will not end your career. I and everyone I know makes them. Before you start working in your department on union sets, though, you want to have the network and relationships to cushion the effect of when things go wrong. What I want you to focus on is getting on set.
You need to start building experience and relationships, and there's nothing outside the industry that will prepare you for or benefit you once you start working in the film industry. There is no right time to jump in because the things you need, experience and connections, can only be gained on set.
Let's get you working.
