Union Pacific 3985 Highball at Sidney

We thought it would run forever, but on October 14, 2010 the worlds largest operating steam powered locomotive in the world, at the time. Challenger class #3985 made its final run. ALCO-built "Challengers" giving the Union Pacific a total of 105 of the 4-6-6-4s. An article by King in "Trains" stated that UP Challengers cost around $130,000.00. There are two surviving Union Pacific Class 4664-4 "Challengers", number 3977 at Cody Park in North Platte, NE and number 3985 which is operational and used in excursion service by the Union Pacific. UP3985 was built by ALCO (Schenectady) #70174, delivered in 1943 it is currently currently it is out of service in Cheyenne, Down for 1472 day inspection. / point.of.rocks.motel.c...

Apparently her top speed was 70. Whoever came up with that wasn't quite right; right here she's doing 73.9 mph (counting driver rotations per second and doing the math from there). What a great last run.

At 1:20, that is the way a real pro announces his approach to a crossing. It is a simple no nonsense warning to all, not an opportunity for the engineer to express his musical talents. Nicely recorded, thank you sir.

Some are being resurrected and brought out of retirement. Seems they outlasted the assisted living facilities (museums).

Our local here in North Georgia is Southern 4501 "The Queen of The South" and to see her in person, pictures and video don't do her justice. I'm thoroughly impressed by the effort that Ed and his team put into these locomotives. I can't wait to get over to Cheyenne to see these giants in person.

It is very enjoyable to see footage of UP 3985 while it was still in operating condition, I will miss this locomotive being apart of the UP rr Steam Heritage Program. I hope that the 3985 is being well preserved at the railroad maintenance shop in Silvis, Illinois.

Many people are praying for that to happen once 3985s rebuild and overhaul is finished in Silvis and hopefully that she does return to Cheyenne one day along with the centennial. So you might just get your wish like everyone else is wishing for

At around 5m 20s the driving wheel is rotating at about 312.5 rpm. Therefore, 1.753m*Pi*60min*312.5rpm/1000m=103.26km/h.

Sadly as said a few other times here, 3985 is officially retired which really sucks. I'm guessing since 4014 is running now they don't want to spend the money it would take to get 3985 back on the rails which would cost as much as restoring 4014 from what I've read and heard.

It would be neat to see them build there own engine or just throw a different body over the diesel to make it match the train so you wouldnt be able to know there is a diesel there.

@@Spencer067 I'm sure that as soon as the steam guys are given an infinite budget, they'll design a dedicated HEP/braking unit that blends in. Until then, we have to accept that they're not going to spend millions on something dedicated. Having something you (UP) already own, such as a diesel engine, do the job makes a whole heck of a lot more fiscal sense.

@Austin Hawkins Thanks for that! I feel very bad that 3985 was down for repairs! She does need a new firebox just like 844 between 1999 and 2004.

Well unfortunately that was never able to happen but hopefully she’ll be back on the rails between now and 2030 as long as the cruise in Silvis keep receiving donations to continue the work that’s needed to restore her to operational condition

@@transportationproductions1794 it’s hard to say. right now 3985 and 5511 have had all their boiler flue tubes removed for repairs and 6936s engines have been opened up for testing. At the rate the donations have been coming in and by the time 3985s boiler has been removed for its rebuild, many have estimated 3985 being back in steam in maybe 26 or 27 depending on how the work progresses, but it’s still to early to tell. If push comes to shove she’ll be fully operational in 2030

No. The 4014 is their #1 priority at the moment, 3985 is fortunately next in line.

Date is listed in this video, and unfortunately, the date is the real last day. It has been retired since January 2020.

Not anymore sadly. Ed announced that only two locomotives will run at a time, so 3985 can no longer run at this point. This also is because of its very poor condition compared to 4014. EDIT: it is now in Silvis.

@@davidng2336 if the economy wasn’t so bad at the time 3985 could probably have been restored but unfortunately the damage was too much and the cost was too high. But the good thing is is that her overhaul is fully underway in Silvis right now with every bit of donation the team gets means another task can be worked on

UP 3985 is a working machine. No museum cobwebs. The best way to preserve a machine is to use it & maintain it. UP management are doing a fantastic job so far.

Thankfully she’s gonna be coming back soon after 4014 is brought back to operational condition. Restoration work of 3985 is expected by around 2020 or so.
