The Worlds Largest Operating Steam Locomotive stokes up her big boiler for maximum steam pressure for an eastbound trip to Omaha Nebraska
on Sept. 18, 2008
UP 3985 operated in its last "regular" train service in 1957. The locomotive was retired about 1962 and after many years of storage in a roundhouse at Cheyenne, Wyoming. UP 3985 was placed on outdoor display beside the Cheyenne depot in 1975. Beginning in 1979 a group of Union Pacific employee-volunteers started work on overhauling the locomotive, and it was returned to operational condition in 1981. Originally a coal-burner, to prevent lineside grass fires it was successfully converted to oil firing in 1990. Stationed at Cheyenne with other equipment in the UP's heritage collection, it is currently used for excursion trains and occasionally mainline freight on ferry moves. It was in the maintenance shop at Cheyenne in 2007 and underwent necessary repairs for service in 2008. It is now back up and running as of 2008. It is one of only two of the original 105 Union Pacific "Challenger" types in existence, the other being UP 3977 on static display in North Platte, Nebraska.
info on 4-6-6-4 at
www.steamlocomotive.com/challe...
Union Pacific Challenger No. 3985 was designed by Union Pacific and built in 1943 by the American Locomotive Company. It is one of 105 Challengers built for Union Pacific between 1936 and 1943 and is the only operating engine of its class in the world today the largest and most powerful operating steam locomotive.
No. 3985 last operated in "regular" train service in 1957. It was retired in 1962 and stored in the roundhouse in Cheyenne, Wyoming, until 1975 when it was placed on display near the Cheyenne depot. A group of Union Pacific employees volunteered their services to restore the locomotive to running condition in 1981.
The name Challenger was given to steam locomotives with a 4-6-6-4 wheel arrangement. This means that they have four wheels in the leading "pilot" truck, which helps guide the locomotive into curves; two sets of six "driving" wheels, and finally, four "trailing" wheels, which support the rear of the engine and its massive firebox. Each set of driving wheels has its own steam cylinder. In essence, the result is two engines under one boiler.
The frame of the locomotive is "articulated," or hinged, to allow it to go through curves. When watching the approaching locomotive go through a curve, you can see the boiler swing out left or right independently of the lower half of the engine, as the rear half of the locomotive remains in a straight direction until its wheels and frame are halfway through the curve.
The Challengers were designed for fast freight service, but occasionally pulled passenger trains. No. 3985 originally burned coal and pulled a tender with a 32-ton capacity. In 1990, it was converted to use No. 5 oil. The top speed of No. 3985 is about 70 m

Its a nice idea about the whales, but not really true... There were no sound recordings of whale song (or anything else for that matter) when the "air chime" multi-pitch whistle came into use in the 19th century. The particular "air chime" chord used by different railroads varied. The (?) Chessie or was it Norfolk & Southern, or another line... well, the sound that inspired the country music ballads was a bit different, more of a minor chord...

Thanks for the reply. My first encounter with a boiler was on an old (1941ish) destroyer (USS English DD696) on a training cruise. I hadn't seen a real ship up close before that. I raised my hand when the Chief said Engineering. I didn't know that the Navy's defination of "engineering" was the fire room. I had only been on the ship for an hour or two when they immeditately put me to work as we steamed out from Mayport (Jacksonville). I learned that when you turned on another burner you also had to open the air shutter and began laying a smoke screen out into the Atlantic. I've been attracted to steam boilers ever since for some reason. I did that job for two weeks but when I went on actual active duty I worked on torpedoes and missiles. Never got to "run" a boiler again.

I visited it, Did you know that the Grand Canyon Railroad manufactured New bearings, $100K worth of labor and they did it for just the cost of the material. Also, in pueblo Colorado, there is a sister engine that lent them her parts for manufactured copies after several parts were stolen from the site. I'm a member there now, so after helping out at Campo CA, I'll head out and lend a helping hand there.

One million pounds with almost 100 thousand pounds of tractive effort. In comparison, a modern GE 5000 HP EMD V20 with a 3.7 MW alternator weighs 420,000 pounds and has a tractive effort of 185,000 pounds. This shows how impressive that rolling boiler is. Modern trains blow a fine sand mist on the rails under the wheels for traction automatically, these old beasts did it by shear weight alone without the benefit of electrically reversible passive brakes and automatic wheel traction rail sanding scrubbers.

Looks like both sets of drivers are closely in phase with one another. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to running front and rear sets closely synchronized, and is there any mechanism to do this, or is it just something that happens sometimes? I assume L/R are 90 degrees out of phase, but would welcome any thoughts on front and rear from those who know. Any issues with harmonics, traction, pulsation, etc?
@729mitch
@729mitch 8 жыл бұрын
There are typically no issues if the two sets of drivers are out of sync because both sets of drivers should be moving at the same speed. But sometimes when engines get put on the track for the first time/after a derailment the drivers are occasionally in the same position.

American mechanical engineering at its finest-before everyone got lazy with unreliable electronic junk. This is why 70 year old Farmall tractors still run-mechanical governors and robust simplicity in design...you can do anything by mechanical means and not rely on electronics that go bad in a couple of years... Too bad we can't build more of these because they really hit their stride with boiler locomotives during this era but the tree huggers would go nuts and they run the show nowadays.

The problem with the grass fire is also well known in Germany, but they allow the run coal steamers. One block after the steam train, a maintenance vehicle with a water tank follows to check for grass fires. They should start diong that here as well.

No offense, but steam may not be the greatest (or most efficient) engines. However, that doesn't make them any less of something special. Heck, they do seem a lot like sentient beings, since they burn fuel for energy (which is like you eating something), with the firebox being like the mouth and the boiler being like the stomach. They even have different personalities with like the genders and names (like for instance: the Wabash Cannonball is a female, the Challenger is also a female, and the Big Boy is a male). No wonder you guys like these things so much!

I need to get one of these as a daily driver. Just something to go to work everyday in, maybe haul some trash to the dump. I'd put a lift kit on it and a Hammer Down sticker on the back and roll coal all over the priuses and anyone with a Bernie Sanders sticker. I'd be a real badass...until a gas shortage hits the east coast.

Never seen a steam engine belch out so much soot!! Poor driving? I've heard if the drivers here in the UK were to run the engines like that back in the day, they would have been given a bollocking.

Skip thanks for a wonderful video of the 3985! This is probably as close as I will ever get to seeing her. I live in Pa. all we see is NS black most of the time with the exception of an OCS with the NS F units. Great stuff thanks again!! Loved it.

hi SkipW. thanks for the ack. I believe the Union of South Africa is taking a well earned rest at the moment, getting a complete overhaul - no surprise U of SA is very rarely filmed going slow!! If you get chance check out the other vids on her there are loads many going at mainline speed or more !! My thanks to you for uploading some really great footage of the locos on your side, keep it up. Kind Regards Dave.

Reading some of the more knowledgeable comments here,l think we can agree that the smoke was laid on for the benefit of the cameras. lt happens over here with the UK steam excursion trains too. The crew know the popular vantage points en-route and lay on a bit of a display for a few moments. l think on coalers they stoke up then starve the fire of air so the combustion is incomplete. With oil,simply open the valves and burn it ritch. Navy destroyers made smoke screens that way. Great stuff !
