Being I am retired merchant marine and have a lot of time on 600 and 900 pound superheated steam turbine systems, they are doing many of the same things that we would do for USCG and ABS inspections. I took precision machining in community college as well as some engineering courses. They are doing a wonderful job just keeping a 70 - 75 year old piece of equipment in service.

Your dedication to your craft Ed are exemplary of your integrity personally! I enjoy every posting of your interviews you have given here, ever since we met in Kansas City May 29, 2011 a day that changed my life as I knew it as it began anew my early dreams of this steam locomotive since childhood and my dad's fascination he instilled in me of UP 844(4)! 12 songs and my first symphony composition in the works now, for my 2019's music contribution in UP's Golden Spike Ceremony at Promontory, I can definetly hold contributory to you and your love of this train and 4014, too, Ed! great work and fabulous talk! I woke up to this notification on my facebook Timeline this morning! it is now 7pm and I have had it playing on my phone herexall day as I went about my housework and piano playing session earlier! I feel a song comin on now.................

very pleased to see so much effort and dedication go into preserving and reconditioning these steel beasts. Steam power ushered in the industrial revolution in America, it built America and Union Pacific is doing a remarkable job keeping history chugging along our railways.

Fantastic at every level: informative, candid, spirited, detailed, authoritative, clear and totally dedicated to the task. Thanks so much. We could not hope for a better vid. on this the most worthwhile steam restoration ever undertaken. Five Star. I did not even know about hollow stays and how they indicate stay failures before they become dangerous. Just great! I'm coming to the US to travel behind 4014. Just got to be there.

Fantastic presentation by Ed Dickens. What struck me most was the attitude, the effort, and the willingness to do a thorough job, no cutting of corners, so the work done now will last for decades, and avoid as many surprises and problems in the future. With the advances in metallurgy since the locomotives were built, I wonder how much that will contribute to their longevity and the avoidance of problems.

I find the restoration work being performed, just fascinating. Marrying the new with the old and make it better, safer, more convenient for all involved. What a great project and tremendous results. For 844, it won't be long now to watch it work, in all of its glory. Thanks Ed, crew, and to the UP, to make this happen next on the 4014.

I find it absolutely incredible that the UP had the forsight to keep all these old drawings, itis almost like they knew that some day the UP would be bringing a big boy back to life not to mention keeping steam alive with the 844 and the challenger. You guy's are awesome.

These drawings are worth their weight in gold. Today I succeed to rebuild & recalibrate the servo hydraulics of a 16 year old Finn-Power Oy CNC punching machine, only because the customer still had the original documentation. The machine is now running as new, thanks to the information.

It was close to the steam locomotive development steam continued to improve efficiency long after we stopped building steam here in the US there were many improvements to exhaust nozzle designed many other items. The last major production run of steam was over 30 years in China The QJ's 2-10-2 coal burning from beginning to end of operation. the QJ's even opened a brand new mountain railroad in the 90's

Hello Steam Up, I really enjoy your videos. I live over here on the East cost and was a volunteer of Steamtown NHS. for 3 1/2 years. Seeing the 4012 sitting there and seeing how big that locomotive is. It's hard to believe that unit was built in upper state NY. at Alco. My Mother enjoyed listening to you speak as well. She remembers the steam era. God willing in April she'll be 85 years old. My Mother says you have a very good speaking voice and you speak clearly that she could understand everything you said. You had said the 844 has never been taken off the active roster, How many miles has that locomotive traveled? I think it's cool that you're still finding tools that the UP used in the day. When I was at Steamtown, I was co-Lead on a project we were comedic restoring the only other Delaware Lackawanna and Western steam locomotive # 565 2-6-0 built by Alco in 1908. The things you were talking about finding repairs that were made through the years, I can relate too. I'm looking forward in seeing your next progress report videos. There very educational to watch. God Bless,Len.

+SkipW *Thanks for an informative two-part on rebuilding a steamer to go, go, go* on a regular schedule for up to five years at a stretch. All the problems shown here will be part of any attempt to get old Baldwin Locomotive Works SerNo 2816 "Reno," an 1871-vintage 4-4-0, ex-Virginia & Truckee River, back into service with a new wagon-top boiler appropriate in scale to a 32-1/2-ton Standard but equal in quality to the far larger boilers installed by American Locomotive on the Union Pacific FEF-3's, CSA-5's, and BB-1's on the Schenectady, NY, USA, assembly line.

Time & money. These engineers are at the peak of their profession, this is expensive high quality workmanship. This lends some heavy big time credit to UP management to recognize & commit to the steam projects. As a non American, ever since I was a child, when I thought of UP, I thought of the Bog Boys. More than any other class, the 4014 is UP.

Great presentation! With all the experience rebuilding 844 that you and your team are getting, what would it take to restore the 838 and return it to the tracks when the other 3 steam projects are complete?
@stevew270
@stevew270 8 жыл бұрын
+J. Smith 838 will never return to the rails as it's a donor for parts for 844. However, it would be cool if some volunteers could get together with funds to rebuild 833 and return it to the rails, from what I've read it's still in excellent shape.

When putting a locomotive in storage would it not be beneficial to fill the boiler with dry nitrogen at 10 or 20 PSI after the heating process. This would stop the action of ambient oxygen in the boiler

Harold, all of these guys do all of the work themselves. They put in many hours over and above their regular professional duties for the UP. Many work day, night and weekends on these restoration projects FOR FREE. This guy is also the engineer at the throttle of the 844 for most of the tours, so he is definitely a qualified, hands on, capable and hard working guy. Unless you are there with a rivet anvil, hammer, torch, pry bar, reamer, drift or other tool, I really don't think you have any right evaluating his abilities or efforts.
