Well done UP. The best way to preserve a machine is to us it as intended. Hope UP work the 844 on revenue creating work once in a while. 1000 times better that a static museum piece.

WOW!!!! Pulling a freight train all by herself, no diesel tag-along. This is HUGE!

Well, simply put, the diesel tag along isn’t helping pull the train anyway. It’s only there because the coaches need electricity. Freight cars don’t need anything but a brake line, which the 844 definitely has.

@@sacredterrador5611 so what provided electrical power back in the day...... heating the coaches must have been easily. the steam locomotive is in itself a giant boiler

Andrew Donohue Before electricity, they were usually lit up with lanterns and heated by small ovens. Though, it varied from car to car. The engine’s heat unfortunately couldn’t be carried back down the train in an effective way.

I really hope they run 4014 with freight next may after the 150 anniversary ceremonies. I would really love to see that

This is so freaking cool! To see 844 not just toted around hauling the light passenger cars, but seeing her be the workhorse she was designed as! Just imagine what 4014 will be able to do...

With the 2 passenger cars in the consist, you could consider it a mixed train!

The reason why those 2 cars are with the UP 844 is because its the only steam locomotive the Union Pacific operates right now and they can't risk the locomotive breaking down without the tools and other stuff they need for the locomotive to repair it, also I know that one of those 2 cars have a kitchen at least for the crew

Interesting. There is no diesel loco attached to create dynamic breaking. Unusual but more statisfying to watch.

But why no footage of the entire freight train instead it`s all pacing the locomotive. I would have liked to have seen just once what it was pulling behind it.

Well, at long last a real operating locomotive pulling revenue freight. It is about time, don't you think? How about getting 4014 and 3985 back in service. They might cost more to operate than the revenue generated but you are showing the reap purpose and operation of these beautiful engineering marvels. This is history as it was 70 years ago. That is a real lesson.

I'm not sure if I've ever heard her work that hard before. Normally when 844 is pulling trains, they're short, and she's at speed. You can really hear her growling as she hauls that thing.

It’s bound to be a lot heavier than the normal excursion trains. No idea how much tonnage it was pulling, especially since we didn’t get to see how long the train was, but it’s probably quite a bit

The good thing about PSR on a railway operating historic steam - when it's not in the shop, it's available power. Available power is going to get slotted into the schedule.

Probably because the loco and the freight were heading in the same direction. Company doesn't want to waste money, so why not? if the 844 is going the right way anyhow?

They plan on using 4014 for freight in certain situations once the restoration is finished.

The mars light brackets got lost on the 2016 overhaul, so they decided to go without for a few years.

Is it weird to cry over this? A machine that literally breathes, panting as it eagerly pushes its near million pound weight and carts at 80 mph speeds. With a roar that is both heard and felt. Steam locomotives are aptly given their name: iron horse.
