The Living Legend stretched her legs today after her rebuild and rolled into Greeley about noon today sorry the Canon Cam Crapped Out but other tape footage is due later • Union Pacific 844 Retu... This just a taste to have proof she was out and about and CFD steam might just happen again this year but the 1 lane road construction on Hwy north of Eaton, CO will make a complete chase next to impossible

man 844 sounds like a really healthy engine. Glad the steam team put so much TLC into her. I can't remember the last time she sounded this good!

The plan as of yesterday is to rebuild the water injector once frontier days is over and then its complete rebuild of the up4014.

80MPH is fast ! I thought this class of locomotive was designed for pulling heavy freight, not s much for speed.

trespire No 844 was originally a passenger loco and ran high speed. Supposedly they were 120mph capable and they regularly would hit 100mph in service. In the 90's Steve Lee would run it 80+ pretty regular.

Just to answer a question on here the reason the up6936 is on the train is for dynamic braking. Steam Engines don't have that capability

i hate to ruin the party, but has anyone noticed that 6936's engines were notched up when taking off and as she got up to speed, why is the 844 being pushed?? i thought "break in"runs we're done from light load to heavy load and repeated???

What you heard was 6936 in DB to provide a resistance load for 844.

The problem likely due to "Autofocus" camera, through a tinted glass window and camera focusing on closer objects than the locomotive, BIG REASON WHY journalists shooting action shots, such as sports events, prefer manual focus cameras..

Well the bracket to the Mars light was in extremely horrible shape due to age and the bolts that were holding it to UP 844's boiler were no better so it was removed.

yes and no. we used the dynamic braking out of Cheyenne as a way to test for pulling power and also for the down hill braking from Speer to Carr because of the grade. Setting air using the automatic brake is fine but its not enough to keep the trains speed at 40 mph. it would essencially be a run-away.

Big jack is usually the one they use for HEP/dynamic breaking from what I've seen, most times I've seen a up steam locomotive they always have the big Jack behind it

+Ben Treece it's there in case something goes wrong, and 844 does not have Dynamic breaking and can't make power for the passenger cars.
