Union Pacific's Big Boy 4-8-8-4 4014 returned to the mainline in August and September 2021 with a mainline tour to New Orleans and St. Louis. On the final leg of its 2021 mainline tour, the world's largest operable steam engine was on the home stretch back to its homebase in Cheyenne, WY. Heading north from Denver, CO, the Big Boy once again put on an impressive show as it returned home.

I find it a neat bonus UP heritage unit 1989 tagged along with 4014 for the rest of its journey from Denver to Cheyenne.

I find it very appropriate that the SD70M trailing directly behind the auxiliary tenders is the same number that an actual Big Boy wore: 4015. It's probably just a coincidence, but it's something that reminds me of when UP had 4014 towed by another SD70M also numbered 4014 when it was towed home to Cheyenne in 2014

Union Pacific often assigns diesels with an appropriate number with their steam, such as all the number of times 844 was paired up with diesel 8444

Although it is sad that it will not be pulling a tour this year, I'm happy she'll be doing a trip to Denver, be on a display there for another day, and pull her Museum Special excursion back to Cheyenne, so we'll have photo opportunities and will still be able to see her run.

Would you be interested in making any narrated mini documentary videos of your own? For example, you could do an “Engines of the Wabash”, or a history video on just Frisco 1352. Anything train-related

We have featured several documentaries on this channel in the past. There are more plans for both mini documentaries and feature length documentaries on this channel, though many of these projects are years from release. There is one slated for release in late 2022.

Why use 2 diesel locomotive helpers?

Only one diesel locomotive in that train. And it’s just there for dynamic braking as needed and to provide PTC (Positive Train Control) to the 4014 as well as to provide an assist to rescue the 4014 should it develop issues. The other thing that looks like a diesel locomotive is a generator car that provides power for the coaches.
