Thank you for this overview of what is on the market. I live in France and 20 months ago bought a hard top tend made by James Bareau. They are made in Portugal. I just love it! I have only used it in France but by the beach and also the high mountains. I hope to make a you tube video about my experiences as an older, not very muscular woman. I can tell you at the beginning it was an epic effort to open and close it!

Make your own for less than a 100 bucks... here’s how, buy a tent you can afford, make a plywood flooring on top of the roof rack and your set. You can make a border around the flooring so it’s secure or strapped down with the mattress you like. When your done fold back up and cover it and strap, it down fold up your ply wood flooring if need be.

I really like the #1 pick. The hard shell seems the most convenient and easy to maneuver. And it seems like a great option for someone who is short, like me. My only problem with the rooftop tent is I have an 80 pound dog and it wouldn't be bad getting her up there but getting down that ladder I think would be a little difficult. It would be nice if you discuss gas mileage between the soft tacos and a hard tops. Thank you for the video it was very helpful.

I have been following the evolution of rooftop tents for some time. Have camped on several occassions with regular tents which is very difficult at times to repack. This is simply awesome. Still struggling to decide which one to pick. I have a 2003 RAV4 stick shift. Any suggestions.

I'm intrigued by the vehicle top tents, but I really liked the one that you can drive away from. When I camp I like to find my spot and then take day trips from that spot. At first I thought, Holy Cow, they are expensive, but then you take into consideration what a typical decent truck topper cost, add the expense of a ladder, motorized mechanisms, and the fact that you are up off the ground AND you get to keep the back of your truck for other cargo . . . it seems reasonable enough.

Roof tend is a great idea. Not only it saves space in your car and time building it, but I would also use it as a guest room on summer or warm days in spring and fall, so it is useful even if you are not traveling. What I would like to add, would be another folding area that could be enclosed with some fabric. Purpose would be enclosed outdoor shower and area for placing small mobile composting toilet, to create enclosed outdoor toilet as well.

Back in the mid 90's I bought a old school bus and I built it into a full time live in R.V camper that me and my ex wife and kids traveled and lived in for about 2 years or so and when it came time for my kids to start with school we had moved into a house and I had bought our own house and property so we were good but those 2 years on the road in a old school bus R.V camper was fun

12 ,11 great because they're compact and look easy to use. 5 this one looks well designed. 1 primo, obviously at the top of the list for a reason. I noticed that many of these required a Land Rover Defender 130 or comparable sized gigantic truck that wouldn't be my first pick anyway. The largest of these rooftop tents didn't make me think of anything except booking a room at the Hilton and enjoying a hot shower in the morning. Some of the smaller models that would easily fasten to a Jeep were calling my name though.

I own the (#2) tamarack by treelineoutdoors and love it. My son (7) begs to sleep in it every weekend. I researched for about a year before making my purchase and deciding on Treeline brand. I've used it multiple times over the past year without any regrets ( except maybe lack of additional accessories and branded gear to sport).

All have a lot of features I'd look into further however, the #1, with mechanical parts, I personally would shy away from. I never want a mechanical part to come between me and a comfortable good night sleep. Mechanical = potential to break. I'll take a manual setup any day for a few extra minutes of my time to charge my personal batteries in comfort for the night to explore the next day. Just a personal preference. Thanks for the review. Well done.

I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma with a "Rack It" cab over heavy duty carrying rack. It should be good for as much weight as the truck can carry. I've had over 800lbs on it so far. I was curious to see how the tents in your video attached, and I can see no reason why they would not work on this heavy duty rack system. I can even attach Yakama rack clamps to the top pipe on my rack to use all the fitting I had for my VW van with 4-76" bars. I think I will check out the Yakama roof top tent, as it was the only one you mentioned with a "rain fly", and it looked like it was designed by people who know how a tent should be. I was going to just put two pieces of hinged plywood on the rack and use that to set up my old Serra Designs tent, no peg tent on, but I may look into one of these. Thanks for the video.

I have been mulling over a design for my toyota 4runner. mine would go fore and aft so to speak in that the tent would be confined to the footprint of the truck. one side would fold out over the hood and the other over the back half of the 4runner. when folded out access would be through the moon roof installed for it. this would allow you to set up no matter what is next to you..

Rooftop tents aren't what they're cracked up to be, they require level ground, which is often hard to find when offroad, are at risk of falling branches and when packed up wet, often end up soaking your bedding - plus you'll have to pop your boots on when you need to pee as those skinny alloy ladders aren't foot friendly. They are great for African travel, because that's what they were designed for.

@toddpalmer3507

Hi!, really like the video and thanks for going into a lot more detail than most videos. here's my question: I am actually building my own adventure trailer to tow behind my Jeep, and I am curious if there are trailer top tents like the one Patriot trailers makes for their x1 trailer that can be bought on their own and that are also of very high quality. the reason I like the trailer style tent is for the side entrance rather than the floor entrance, which means that when mounting on a trailer the roof carrier would not need to be adjustable to raise the tent up high enough to attach an annex or be able to stand under a RTT, with a side entrance tent it all stays in one place. let me know whats out there! thanks

I have the Ikamper skycamper RTT, all in with accessories it’s $5,000. Yes it is pricy! I average 90 days or more a year off road camping. I was using the Kodiak bowflex 10x10 ground tent, great except it takes a lot of work setting up and breaking down, plus you can not camp in a rocky area. Since the Ikamper is mounted to my roof I can camp anywhere my Jeep can go. It sets up or down in one minute. Has a locking devices for high winds. I spent a better part of a year research RTT, went to the overland expo to physically look at them. For what I’m doing this was the best set up.

Not too bad of a video showing the different options. I don't understand your ranking system as it appears you ranked them by what you think would be good based on pictures of the products. Example: The Bundutop is probably one of the top designs out there for mechanical RTTs and the iKamper is currently the most sought after clamshell RTT, both are leaders because of functionality, durability, and proven use.
